The series "studies in computational intelligence" (SCI) publishes new developments and advances in the various areas of computationalintelligence quickly and with a high quality. The intent is to cover the theory, applications, and design methods of computationalintelligence, as embedded in the fields of engineering, computer science, physics and life science, as well as the methodologies behind them. The series contains monographs, lecture notes and edited volumes in computationalintelligence spanning the areas of neural networks, connectionist systems, genetic algorithms, evolutionary computation, artificial intelligence, cellular automata, self-organizing systems, soft computing, fuzzy systems, and hybrid intelligent systems. Critical to both contributors and readers are the short publication time and world-wide distribution - this permits a rapid and broad dissemination of research results. The purpose of the 11th IEEE/ACIS International Conference on Computer and Information Science (ICIS 2012) was held on May 30-1June1, 2012 in Shanghai, China is to bring together scientist, engineers, computer users, students to share their experiences and exchange new ideas, and research results about all aspects (theory, applications and tools) of computer and information science, and to discuss the practical challenges encountered along the way and the solutions adopted to solve them The conference organizers selected the best 20 papers from those papers accepted for presentation at the conference in order to publish them in this volume. The papers were chosen based on review scores submitted by members of the program committee, and underwent further rigorous rounds of review.

Adaptation and personalization have been extensively studied in CSCL research community aiming to design intelligent systems that adaptively support eLearning processes and collaboration. Yet, with the fast development in Internet technologies, especially with the emergence of new data technologies and the mobile technologies, new opportunities and perspectives are opened for advanced adaptive and personalized systems. Adaptation and personalization are posing new research and development challenges to nowadays CSCL systems. In particular, adaptation should be focused in a multi-dimensional way (cognitive, technological, context-aware and personal). Moreover, it should address the particularities of both individual learners and group collaboration. As a consequence, the aim of this book is twofold. On the one hand, it discusses the latest advances and findings in the area of intelligent adaptive and personalized learning systems. On the other hand it analyzes the new implementation perspectives for intelligent adaptive learning and collaborative systems that are brought by the advances in scripting languages, IMS LD, educational modeling languages and learning activity management systems. Given the variety of learning needs as well as the existence of different technological solutions, the book exemplifies the methodologies and best practices through several case studies and adaptive real-world collaborative learning scenarios, which show the advancement in the field of analysis, design and implementation of intelligent adaptive and personalized systems.

During the last decade, Knowledge Discovery and Management (KDM or, in French, EGC for Extraction et Gestion des connaissances) has been an intensive and fruitful research topic in the French-speaking scientific community. In 2003, this enthusiasm for KDM led to the foundation of a specific French-speaking association, called EGC, dedicated to supporting and promoting this topic. More precisely, KDM is concerned with the interface between knowledge and data such as, among other things, Data Mining, Knowledge Discovery, Business intelligence, Knowledge Engineering and Semantic Web. The recent and novel research contributions collected in this book are extended and reworked versions of a selection of the best papers that were originally presented in French at the EGC 2010 Conference held in Tunis, Tunisia in January 2010. The volume is organized in three parts. Part I includes four chapters concerned with various aspects of Data Cube and Ontology-based representations. Part II is composed of four chapters concerned with Efficient Pattern Mining issues, while in Part III the last four chapters address Data Preprocessing and Information Retrieval.

Intelligent systems provide a platform to connect the research in artificial intelligence to real-world problem solving applications. Various intelligent systems have been developed to face real-world applications. This book discusses the modern advances in intelligent systems and the tools in applied artificial intelligence. It consists of twenty-three chapters authored by participants of the 25th International Conference on Industrial, Engineering & Other Applications of Applied Intelligent Systems (IEA/AIE 2012) which was held in Dalian, China. This book is divided into six parts, including Applied intelligence, Cognitive Computing and Affective Computing, Data Mining and Intelligent Systems, Decision Support Systems, Machine Learning, and Natural Language Processing. Each part includes three to five chapters. In these chapters, many approaches, applications, restrictions, and discussions are presented. The material of each chapter is self-contained and was reviewed by at least two anonymous referees to assure the high quality. Readers can select any individual chapter based on their research interests without the need of reading other chapters. We hope that this book provides useful reference values to researchers and students in the field of applied intelligence. We also hope that readers will find opportunities and recognize challenges through the papers presented in this book.

One of the most challenging issues in modelling today's large-scale computational systems is to effectively manage highly parametrised distributed environments such as computational grids, clouds, ad hoc networks and P2P networks. Next-generation computational grids must provide a wide range of services and high performance computing infrastructures. Various types of information and data processed in the large-scale dynamic grid environment may be incomplete, imprecise, and fragmented, which complicates the specification of proper evaluation criteria and which affects both the availability of resources and the final collective decisions of users. The complexity of grid architectures and grid management may also contribute towards higher energy consumption. All of these issues necessitate the development of intelligent resource management techniques, which are capable of capturing all of this complexity and optimising meaningful metrics for a wide range of grid applications. This book covers hot topics in the design, administration and management of dynamic grid environments with a special emphasis on the preferences and autonomous decisions of system users, secure access to the processed data and services, and application of green technologies. It features advanced research related to scalable genetic-based heuristic approaches to grid scheduling, whereby new scheduling criteria, such as system reliability, security, and energy consumption are incorporated into a general scheduling model. This book may be a valuable reference for students, researchers, and practitioners who work on or who are interested in joining -- interdisciplinary research efforts in the areas of distributed and evolutionary computation.

The present book includes a set of selected extended papers from the second International Joint Conference on computationalintelligence (IJCCI 2010), held in Valencia, Spain, from 24 to 26 October 2010. The conference was composed by three co-located conferences: The International Conference on Fuzzy Computation (ICFC), the International Conference on Evolutionary Computation (ICEC), and the International Conference on Neural Computation (ICNC). Recent progresses in scientific developments and applications in these three areas are reported in this book. IJCCI received 236 submissions, from 49 countries, in all continents. After a double blind paper review performed by the Program Committee, only 30 submissions were accepted as full papers and thus selected for oral presentation, leading to a full paper acceptance ratio of 13%. Additional papers were accepted as short papers and posters. A further selection was made after the Conference, based also on the assessment of presentation quality and audience interest, so that this book includes the extended and revised versions of the very best papers of IJCCI 2010. Commitment to high quality standards is a major concern of IJCCI that will be maintained in the next editions, considering not only the stringent paper acceptance ratios but also the quality of the program committee, keynote lectures, participation level and logistics.
