This book presents the results of the research in one of the most complex and difficult areas of research, such as research in the areas of thinking and understanding. This research that is carried out in the newly founded Queen Jadwiga Research Institute of Understanding is focused on research on the problem of visual understanding and visual thinking. According to our knowledge, this book is the first attempt to investigate the complexity of the visual thinking problems in the context of building the thinking machine. We are aware how complex this problem is, however, we believe that the results of our research will pave the way into the new way of thinking about designing the thinking machines and, especially, will supply the new scientific arguments about our human nature. Researchers in area of artificial intelligence do not pay sufficient attention into understanding/thinking problems. It was probably for that reason that there was no proper representation to capture visual aspects of the world in the form that could be compatible with other representations of the non-visual knowledge.

This volume provides a source wherein academics, researchers and practitioners may derive high-quality, original and state-of-the-art papers describing theoretical aspects, systems architectures, analysis and design tools and techniques, and implementation experiences in intelligent systems where information and knowledge management should be mainly characterised as a net-centric infrastructure riding on the fifth wave of "distributed intelligence". An urgent need for editing such a volume has occurred as a result of vivid discussions and presentations at the IEEE-IS 2006 The 2006 Third International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Systems held in London, UK, at the University of Westminster in the beginning of September, 2006. This book is a compilation of many valuable inspiring works written by both the conference participants and some other experts in this new and challenging field.

Cellular nonlinear networks are naturally inspired computing architectures where complex dynamic behaviors may emerge as a result of the local or prescribed connectivity among simple cells. Functionally, much like in biology, each cell is defined by a few bits of information called a gene. Such systems may be used in signal processing applications (intelligent sensors) or may be used to model and understand natural systems. While many publications focus on the dynamics in cellular automata and various applications, less deal with an important problem, that of designing for emergence. Put in simple words: How to choose a cell such that a desired behavior will occur in the cellular system. This book proposes a systematic framework for measuring emergence and a systematic design method to locate computationally meaningful genes in a reasonable computing time. Programs and application examples are provided so that the reader may easily understand the new concepts and develop her own specific experiments. An accessible language recommends it to a large audience including specialists from various interdisciplinary fields who may benefit from a better understanding of emergence and its applications to their specific field.

Statistical implicative analysis is a data analysis method created by Rgis Gras almost thirty years ago which has a significant impact on a variety of areas ranging from pedagogical and psychological research to data mining. Statistical implicative analysis (SIA) provides a framework for evaluating the strength of implications; such implications are formed through common knowledge acquisition techniques in any learning process, human or artificial. This new concept has developed into a unifying methodology, and has generated a powerful convergence of thought between mathematicians, statisticians, psychologists, specialists in pedagogy and last, but not least, computer scientists specialized in data mining. This volume collects significant research contributions of several rather distinct disciplines that benefit from SIA. Contributions range from psychological and pedagogical research, bioinformatics, knowledge management, and data mining.

The Web has revolutionized the way we seek information on all aspects of education, entertainment, business, health and so on. The Web has evolved into a publishing medium, global electronic market and increasingly, a platform for conducting electronic commerce. A part of this success can be attributed to the tremendous advances made in the Artificial intelligence field. The popularity of the Web has opened many opportunities to develop smart Web-based systems using artificial intelligence techniques. There exist numerous Web technology and applications that can benefit with the application of artificial intelligence techniques. It is not possible to cover them all in one book with a required degree of quality, depth and width. We present this book to discuss some important Web developments by using artificial intelligence techniques in the areas of Web personalisation, semantic Web and Web services. The primary readers of this book are undergraduate/postgraduate students, researchers and practitioner s in information technology and computer science related areas.

In this book the use of ER techniques for the design of self-organising group behaviours, for both simulated and real robots is introduced. This research has a twofold value. From an engineering perspective, an automatic methodology for synthesising complex behaviours in a robotic system is described. ER techniques should be used in order to obtain robust and efficient group behaviours based on self-organisation. From a more theoretical point of view, the second important contribution brought forth by the author's experiments concerns the understanding of the basic principles underlying self-organising behaviours and collective intelligence. In this experimental work, the evolved behaviours are analysed in order to uncover the mechanisms that have led to a certain organisation. In summary, this book tries to mediate between two apparently opposed perspectives: engineering and cognitive science. The experiments presented and the results obtained contribute to the assessment of ER not only as a design too l, but also as a methodology for modelling and understanding intelligent adaptive behaviours.

Knowledge-Driven Computing constitutes an emerging area of intensive research located at the intersection of computationalintelligence and Knowledge Engineering with strong mathematical foundations. It embraces methods and approaches coming from diverse computational paradigms, such as evolutionary computation and nature-inspired algorithms, logic programming and constraint programming, rule-based systems, fuzzy sets and many others. The use of various knowledge representation formalisms and knowledge processing and computing paradigms is oriented towards the efficient resolution of computationally complex and difficult problems. The main aim of this volume has been to gather together a selection of recent papers providing new ideas and solutions for a wide spectrum of Knowledge-Driven Computing approaches. More precisely, the ultimate goal has been to collect new knowledge representation, processing and computing paradigms which could be useful to practitioners involved in the area of discussion. To t his end, contributions covering both theoretical aspects and practical solutions, and dealing with topics of interest for a wide audience, and/or cross-disciplinary research were preferred.

A paradigmatic perspective for modeling and control of physical systems has been used since a long time ago: The input/output approach. Although quite natural for our human experience, this perspective imposes a cause/effect framework to the system under study although such system may not have necessarily such cause/effect structure. Actually, from a general point of view, a system interacts with its environment by exchange of mass and energy which should imply the use of bidirectional arrows in a block diagram rather than using unidirectional ones. Another perspective arose when a new variable showed up in systems and control theory: the state (Kalman). Thus, the input/state/output approach was born. Although the concept of state is cornerstone, qualitative characteristics of a system (stability, controllability and observability) have to be defined in terms of a representation of the system, i.e., such characteristics become representation dependent. In contrast, the relatively new Behavioral Approach for systems and control (Jan C. Willems) deals directly with the solution of the differential equations which represent the system. This set of allowed solutions is referred to as the behavior of the system. Thus, the key is the behavior and not the representation. This fact makes this perspective a representation free approach. This book reviews known topics of the Behavioral Approach and offers new theoretic results with the advantage of including control algorithms implemented numerically in the computer. In addition, issues of numerical analysis are also included. The programs and algorithms are MATLAB based.

One of the keystones in practical metaheuristic problem-solving is the fact that tuning the optimization technique to the problem under consideration is crucial for achieving top performance. This tuning/customization is usually in the hands of the algorithm designer, and despite some methodological attempts, it largely remains a scientific art. Transferring a part of this customization effort to the algorithm itself -endowing it with smart mechanisms to self-adapt to the problem- has been a long pursued goal in the field of metaheuristics. These mechanisms can involve different aspects of the algorithm, such as for example, self-adjusting the parameters, self-adapting the functioning of internal components, evolving search strategies, etc. Recently, the idea of hyperheuristics, i.e., using a metaheuristic layer for adapting the search by selectively using different low-level heuristics, has also been gaining popularity. This volume presents recent advances in the area of adaptativeness in metaheuristi c optimization, including up-to-date reviews of hyperheuristics and self-adaptation in evolutionary algorithms, as well as cutting edge works on adaptive, self-adaptive and multilevel metaheuristics, with application to both combinatorial and continuous optimization.
