This research book presents the agent theory and adaptation of agents in different contexts. Agents of different orders of complexity must be autonomous in the rules used. The agent must have a brain by which it can discover rules contained within the data. Because rules are the instruments by which agents change the environment, any adaptation of the rules can be considered as an evolution of the agents. Because uncertainty is present in every context, we shall describe in this book how it is possible to introduce global uncertainty from the local world into the description of the rules. This book contains ten chapters. Chapter 1 gives a general dscription of the evolutionary adaptation agent. Chapter 2 describes the actions and meta actions of the agent at different orders. Chapter 3 presents in an abstract and formal way the actions at different orders. Chapter 4 connects systems and meta systems with the adaptive agent. Chapter 5 describes the brain of the agent by the morphogenetic neuron theory. Chapter 6 introduces the logic structure of the adaptive agent. Chapter 7 describes the feedback and hyper-feedback in the adaptive agent. Chapter 8 introduces the adaptation field into the modal logic space as logic instrument in the adaptive agent. Chapter 9 describes the action of the agent in the physical domain. Chapter 10 presents the practical application of agents in robots and evolutionary computing.

This ambitious exposition by Malik and Mordeson on the fuzzification of discrete structures not only supplies a solid basic text on this key topic, but also serves as a viable tool for learning basic fuzzy set concepts "from the ground up" due to its unusual lucidity of exposition. While the entire presentation of this book is in a completely traditional setting, with all propositions and theorems provided totally rigorous proofs, the readability of the presentation is not compromised in any way; in fact, the many ex cellently chosen examples illustrate the often tricky concepts the authors address. The book's specific topics - including fuzzy versions of decision trees, networks, graphs, automata, etc. - are so well presented, that it is clear that even those researchers not primarily interested in these topics will, after a cursory reading, choose to return to a more in-depth viewing of its pages. Naturally, when I come across such a well-written book, I not only think of how much better I could have written my co-authored monographs, but naturally, how this work, as distant as it seems to be from my own area of interest, could nevertheless connect with such. Before presenting the briefest of some ideas in this direction, let me state that my interest in fuzzy set theory (FST) has been, since about 1975, in connecting aspects of FST directly with corresponding probability concepts. One chief vehicle in carrying this out involves the concept of random sets.

Applications of some selected softcomputing methods to acoustics and sound engineering are presented in this book. The aim of this research study is the implementation of softcomputing methods to musical signal analysis and to the recognition of musical sounds and phrases. Accordingly, some methods based on such learning algorithms as neural networks, rough sets and fuzzy-logic were conceived, implemented and tested. Additionally, the above-mentioned methods were applied to the analysis and verification of subjective testing results. The last problem discussed within the framework of this book was the problem of fuzzy control of the classical pipe organ instrument.;The obtained results show that computational intelligence and softcomputing may be used for solving some vital problems in both musical and architectural acoustics.

The concept of fuzziness, inspired by Zadeh (1965), brings us fruitful results when it is applied to problems in decision making. Recently, problems in fuzzy decision making are getting more complex, and one of the most complex fac tors is dynamics in systems. Dynamical approach to fuzzy decision making has been proposed by Bellman and Zadeh's celebrated paper "Decision-making in a fuzzy environment" (1970). The idea has developed into fuzzy mathemati cal programming and has been applied in many fields including management science, operations research, control theory, engineering, systems analysis, computer science, mathematical finance etc. Dynamic programming, advo cated in Bellmans book "Dynamic programming" (1957), is one of the most powerful tools to deal with dynamics in systems, and Bellman and Zadeh has proposed the optimality principle in fuzzy decision making by (1970) introducing fuzzy dynamic programming. Fuzzy dynamic programming and fuzzy mathematical programming has been making remakable progress after they were given life by Bellman and Zadeh's paper (1970). In this volume, various kinds of dynamics, not only time but also structure of systems, are considered. This volume contains ten reviewed papers, which deal with dynamics in theory and applications and whose topics are poten tially related to dynamics and are expected to develope dynamical study in near future. first, fuzzy dynamic programming is reviewed from a viewpoint of its origin and consider its developement in theory and applications.

softcomputing represents a collection of techniques, such as neural networks, evolutionary computation, fuzzy logic, and probabilistic reasoning. As - posed to conventional "hard" computing, these techniques tolerate impre- sion and uncertainty, similar to human beings. In the recent years, successful applications of these powerful methods have been published in many dis- plines in numerous journals, conferences, as well as the excellent books in this book series on studies in fuzziness and soft computing. This volume is dedicated to recent novel applications of softcomputing in multimedia processing. The book is composed of 21 chapters written by experts in their respective fields, addressing various important and timely problems in multimedia computing such as content analysis, indexing and retrieval, recognition and compression, processing and filtering, etc. In the chapter authored by Guan, Muneesawang, Lay, Amin, and Lee, a radial basis function network with Laplacian mixture model is employed to perform image and video retrieval. D. Androutsos, P. Androutsos, Plataniotis, and Venetsanopoulos investigate color image indexing and retrieval within a small-world framework. Wu and Yap develop a framework of fuzzy relevance feedback to model the uncertainty of users' subjective perception in image retrieval.
