This ima Volume in mathematics and its applications ON THE EVOLUTION OF PHASE BOUNDARIES is based on the proceedings of a workshop which was an integral part of the 1990- 91 ima program on "Phase Transitions and Free Boundaries". The purpose of the workshop was to bring together mathematicians and other scientists working on the Stefan problem and related theories for modeling physical phenomena that occurs in two phase systems. We thank M.E. Gurtin and G. McFadden for editing the proceedings. We also take this opportunity to thank the National Science Foundation, whose financial support made the workshop possible. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. PREFACE A primary goal of the ima workshop on the Evolution of Phase Boundaries from September 17-21, 1990 was to emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of contempo rary research in this field, research which combines ideas from nonlinear partial dif ferential equations, asymptotic analysis, numerical computation, and experimental science. The workshop brought together researchers from several disciplines, includ ing mathematics, physics, and both experimental and theoretical materials science.

An important objective of the organizers was to draw a broad set of statisticians working in robustness or diagnostics into collaboration on the challenging problems in these areas, particularly on the interface between them. We thank the organizers of the robustness and diagnostics program Noel Cressie, Thomas P. Hettmansperger, Peter J. Huber, R. Douglas Martin, and especially Werner Stahel and Sanford Weisberg who edited the proceedings. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. PREFACE Central themes of all statistics are estimation, prediction, and making decisions under uncertainty. A standard approach to these goals is through parametric mod elling. Parametric models can give a problem sufficient structure to allow standard, well understood paradigms to be applied to make the required inferences. If, how ever, the parametric model is not completely correct, then the standard inferential methods may not give reasonable answers. In the last quarter century, particularly with the advent of readily available computing, more attention has been paid to the problem of inference when the parametric model used is not correctly specified.

A vner Friedman Robert Gulliver v PREFACE There are a large number of problems where qualitative features of a partial differential equation in an appropriate regime are determined by the behavior of an associated ordinary differential equation. The example which gives the area its name is the limit of quantum mechanical Hamil tonians (Schrodinger operators) as Planck's constant h goes to zero, which is determined by the corresponding classical mechanical system. A sec ond example is linear wave equations with highly oscillatory initial data. The solutions are described by geometric optics whose centerpiece are rays which are solutions of ordinary differential equations analogous to the clas sical mechanics equations in the example above. Much recent work has concerned with understanding terms beyond the leading term determined by the quasi classical limit. Two examples of this involve Weyl asymptotics and the large-Z limit of atomic Hamiltonians, both areas of current research.

However, during this time there has been a small cadre seeking precise solutions of equations and rigorous proofs of mathematical results. For example, number theory and combina torics have a long history of computer-assisted proofs; such methods are now well established in these fields. In analysis the use of computers to obtain exact results has been fragmented into several schools.

A vner Friedman Robert Gulliver v PREFACE Although the field of wave propagation and scattering has its classical roots in the last century, it has enjoyed a rich and vibrant life over the past 50 odd years. Scientists, engineers, and mathematicians have devel oped sophisticated asymptotic and numerical tools to solve problems of ever increasing complexity. Their work has been spurred on by emerging and maturing technologies, primarily concerned with the propagation and reception of information, and the efficient transmission of energy. The vitality of this scientific field is not waning. Increased demands to precisely quantify, measure, and control the propagation and scattering of waves in increasingly complex settings pose challenging scientific and mathematical problems. These push the envelope of analysis and comput ing, just as their forerunners did 50 years ago. These modern technological problems range from using underwater sound to monitor and predict global warming, to periodically embedding phase-sensitive amplifiers in optical fibers to insure long range digital communication.

Sell Hans Weinberger PREFACE A workshop on the hydrodynamic behavior of interacting particle systems was held at the Institute for mathematics and its applications at the University of Minnesota during the week of March 17, 1986. Fifteen papers presented at the workshop are collected in this volume. They contain research in several different directions that are currently being pursued. The paper of Chaikin, Dozier and Lindsay is concerned with experimental results on suspensions in regimes where modern mathematical methods could be useful. The paper of Fritz gives an introduction to these methods as does the paper of Spohn. Analytical methods currently used by in the physics and chemistry literature are presented in the paper of Freed, Wang and Douglas. The paper of Caflisch deals with time dependent effects in sedimentation.

Many important molecular conformation problems, such as protein folding, are expressed as global minimization problems. It is the fact that local minimization is insufficient, that markedly differentiates this volume from the previous two. Unfortunately, global minimization problems that result from models of molecular conformation are usually intractable. For example, simple 1-dimensional versions of distance conformation problems are NP-hard. Nevertheless, there has been significant recent progress in the design of promising heuristic strategies (often involving the use of high- performance parallel computers) for computing approximate global minimizers. The purpose of the sessions represented in this volume was to discuss the new algorithmic advances for global minimization in the context of protein folding and related molecular minimization problems. Emphasis was on practical shortcomings of current approaches, outstanding problems and questions, and the use of high-performance parallel computers.
