Real-time systems play a crucial role in our society, supporting several important application areas, such as nuclear and chemical plant control, flight control systems, traffic control in airports, harbors, and train stations, telecommunication systems, industrial automation, robotics, defensive military systems, space missions, and so on. Despite such a large number of critical applications, most of the current real-time systems are still designed and implemented using low level programming and empirical techniques without the support of a precise scientific methodology. The consequence of this approach is a lack of reliability, which in critical applications may cause serious damage to the environment or result in significant human loss. This book is a basic treatise on real-time computing, with particular emphasis on predictable scheduling algorithms. The main objectives are to introduce the basic concepts of real-time computing, illustrate the most significant results in the field, and provide the basic methodologies for designing predictable computing systems which can be used to support critical control applications. The text presents fundamental concepts which are clearly defined at the beginning of each chapter, and each algorithm is described through concrete examples, figures and tables. After introducing the basic concepts of real-time computing, the book covers such topics as taxonomy of scheduling algorithms, models of tasks with explicit time constraints, handling tasks with precedence relations, periodic and aperiodic task scheduling, access protocols to shared resources, asynchronous communication mechanisms, schedulability analysis, and handling overload conditions.

Color Theory and Modeling for computer Graphics, Visualization, and Multimedia Applications deals with color vision and visual computing. This book provides an overview of the human visual system with an emphasis on color vision and perception. The book then goes on to discuss how human color vision and perception are applied in several applications using computer-generated displays, such as computer graphics and information and data visualization. Color Theory and Modeling for computer Graphics, Visualization, and Multimedia Applications is suitable as a secondary text for a graduate-level course on computer graphics, computer imaging, or multimedia computing and as a reference for researchers and practitioners developing computer graphics and multimedia applications.

From the Publisher: The rapid development of wireless digital communication technology has created capabilities that software systems are only beginning to exploit. The falling cost of both communication and of mobile computing devices (laptop computers, hand-held computers, etc.) is making wireless computing affordable not only to business users but also to consumers. Mobile computing is not a "scaled-down" version of the established and well-studied field of distributed computing. The nature of wireless communication media and the mobility of computers combine to create fundamentally new problems in networking, operating systems, and information systems. Furthermore, many of the applications envisioned for mobile computing place novel demands on software systems. Although mobile computing is still in its infancy, some basic concepts have been identified and several seminal experimental systems developed. Mobile Computing contains chapters that describe these concepts and systems, and the book describes applications that are currently being deployed and tested. Mobile Computing serves as a valuable reference book and may also be used as a text for a course on the subject.

From the Publisher: The field of automotive electronics is an important application area of fault-tolerant real-time systems. Systems like anti-lock braking, engine control, active suspension or vehicle dynamics control have demanding real-time and fault-tolerance requirements. These requirements have to be met even in the presence of very limited resources since cost is extremely important. Because of its interesting properties Fault-Tolerant Real-Time Systems gives an introduction to the application area of automotive electronics. The requirements of automotive electronics are a topic in the remainder of this work for discussion and are used as a benchmark to evaluate solutions to the problem of replica determinism.

From the Publisher: Application-specific standard products (ASSPs) and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) are expected to become more than fifty percent of the $10 billion VLSI Digital Signal Processing (DSP) market in year 2000. With rapidly shrinking time-to-market (TTM) requirements, and multiple design goals that seek to optimize sample rate, clock speed, area, and power, the novel core-based behavioral synthesis methodology presented in this book shows how organizations can meet these new challenges effectively and consistently over the next decade. The authors show how VLSI chips can be rapidly designed within a VHDL-based synthesis environment using a pre-designed library of core components. The core library represents synthesizable units of behavior (function and control) that are both application-specific and organization-specific, empowering the chip designer with a competitive advantage. The key to the quick-turnaround is the high amount of systematic reuse utilized within the design methodology. The percolation of accurate power, speed, area, and timing information to higher levels of abstraction allows rapid and efficient exploration of the design space facilitating the optimization of these objectives individually or concurrently. System integration and test of ASICs into board-level designs is also facilitated. Quick-Turnaround ASIC Design with VHDL: Core-Based Behavioral Synthesis presents a new approach to behavioral synthesis that uses a pre-designed library of DSP cores, providing a highly competitive alternative to existing high-level synthesis tools for DSP.
