JR is a language for concurrent programming. It is an imperative language that provides explicit mechanisms for concurrency, communication, and s- chronization. JR is an extension of the Java programming language with - ditional concurrency mechanisms based on those in the SR (Synchronizing Resources) programming language. It is suitable for writing programs for both shared- and distributed-memory applications and machines; it is, of course, also suitable for writing sequential programs. JR can be used in applications such as parallel computation, distributed systems, simulation, and many others. JR supports many “features” useful for concurrent programming. However, our goals have always been keeping the language simple and easy to learn and use. We have achieved these goals by integrating common notions, both sequ- tial and concurrent, into a few powerful mechanisms. We have implemented these mechanisms as part of a complete language to determine their feasibility and cost, to gain hands-on experience, and to provide a tool that can be used for research and teaching. The introduction to Chapter 1 expands on how JR has realized our design goals.

focuses on creating multiple virtual sound sources in 3D reverberant spaces using adaptive filters. Adaptive algorithms are introduced and explained, including the multiple-error filtered-x algorithm and the adjoint LMS algorithm.;The book covers the physical, psychoacoustical, and signal processing aspects of adaptive and non-adaptive 3D sound systems. Included is an introduction to spatial hearing, sound localization and reverberation, frequency selectivity of the human auditory system, the state of the art in HRTF-based 3D sound systems, binaural synthesis, and loudspeaker displays. The adaptive approach to HRTF-based 3D sound systems is examined in detail for the general case of creating multiple virtual sound sources at the ears of multiple listeners in a reverberant 3D space. The derived solution can be applied to other applications, such as cross-talk cancellation, loudspeakers and room equalization, concert hall simulation, and active sound control. Several solutions for the problem of moving listeners are introduced. Strategies for enlarging the zones of equalization around the listeners' ears, correct loudspeakers positioning, and using multiresolution filters are proposed. Fast multiresolution spectral analysis using non-uniform sampling is developed for implementation of multiresolution filters.;The well-focused topics, along with implementation details for adaptive algorithms, make;suitable for multimedia applications programmers, advanced level students, and researchers in audio and signal processing.

The success of VHDL since it has been balloted in 1987 as an IEEE standard may look incomprehensible to the large population of hardware designers, who had never heared of Hardware Description Languages before (for at least 90% of them), as well as to the few hundreds of specialists who had been working on these languages for a long time (25 years for some of them). Until 1988, only a very small subset of designers, in a few large companies, were used to describe their designs using a proprietary HDL, or sometimes a HDL inherited from a University when some software environment happened to be developped around it, allowing usability by third parties. A number of benefits were definitely recognized to this practice, such as functional verification of a specification through simulation, first performance evaluation of a tentative design, and sometimes automatic microprogram generation or even automatic high level synthesis. As there was apparently no market for HDL's, the ECAD vendors did not care about them, start-up companies were seldom able to survive in this area, and large users of proprietary tools were spending more and more people and money just to maintain their internal system.

presents ARCH, a library built as an extension to MPI. ARCH relies on a small set of programming abstractions that allow the writing of well-structured multi-threaded parallel codes according to the object-oriented programming style. ARCH has been written with C++. The book describes the built-in classes, and illustrates their use through several template application cases in several fields of interest: Distributed Algorithms (global completion detection, distributed process serialization), Parallel Combinatorial Optimization (A* procedure), Parallel Image-Processing (segmentation by region growing). The Second international Workshop on Cooperative Internet Computing (CIC2002) has brought together researchers, academics, and industry practitioners who are involved and interested in the development of advanced and emerging cooperative computing technologies. Cooperative computing is an important computing paradigm to enable different parties to work together towards a pre defined non-trivial goal. It encompasses important technological areas like computer supported cooperative work, workflow, computer assisted design and concurrent programming. As technologies continue to advance and evolve, there is an increasing need to research and develop new classes of middlewares and applications to leverage on the combined benefits of Internet and web to provide users and programmers with highly interactive and robust cooperative computing environment. It is the aim of this forum to promote close interactions and exchange of ideas among researchers, academics and practitioners on the state-of-the art researches in all of these exciting areas. We have partnered with Kluwer Acedamic Press this year to bring to you a book compilation of the papers that were presented at the CIC2002 workshop. The importance of the research area is reflected both in the quality and quantity of the submitted papers, where each paper was reviewed by at least three PC members. As a result, we were able to only accept 14 papers for full presentation at the workshop, while having to reject several excellent papers due to the limitations of the program schedule.
