We propose a pair of shape features for shape-similarity search of 3D (three-dimensional) polygonal-mesh models. The shape features are an extension of the D2 shape functions proposed by Osada et al. (2001). Our proposed shape features are tolerant of topological variations and geometrical degeneracies. Our shape feature is also invariant to similarity transformation. Experiments showed that, with only a modest increase in computational cost, our shape feature achieved a significant performance improvement over Osada's D2.

In many application areas an optimal visualization of a complex graph depends on the specific task to be accomplished by the user. Therefore a means of locally customizable layouts is required to focus on different problem aspects. We propose a concept of user-driven hierarchy formation and layout optimization in the context of IBM zSeries I/O configurations. We combine the concepts of glyphs, local 3D layout managers and partitioning galaxies to create an optimal layout for a given task. Additionally, to simplify global navigation, structural details are abstracted and can be refined upon user request. Since element context is crucial for understanding and consistently configuring an I/O configuration, guided navigation along the connections in this data structure is essential. To efficiently customize a graph layout, complex selection mechanisms are needed to quickly define the areas affected by a particular layout. Although we focus on IBM zSeries I/O configurations, the approach we present is quite generic and can be adopted for other fields of application.

Although there have been a large number of standards for two-dimensional images, there has not been as extensive a study into representing three-dimensional datasets. Presented here is a test from an extended system to cater for initially autostereo sequence datasets, although still suitable for all types of three-dimensional datasets. Extensions to do three-dimensional manipulation operations are defined that are both computationally efficient when applied to the coded form and are compression conscious in that they maintain compression performance. Autostereoscopic displays have been developed which create a three-dimensional image without the need for special glasses or headsets. They work by displaying multiple images each viewable over a very narrow field of view. This has the advantage of being able to look around objects. Increasing the number of images per view increases the bandwidth required. To aid stereo disparity in the human visual system the important features to retain in stereo sets are potentially different from standard two-dimensional images. Edge information and highlights have been shown to be of paramount importance for the human visual system to accurately perceive depth. The theme of coding three-dimensional regions as separate entities allows for a potential high compression ratio and subsequent transmission rate speed-up. A controlled merging scheme of regions is also presented which, being designed to keep all highlights and avoid defocusing of the image, gives a corresponding compression ratio increase while retaining the majority of the stereo cues.

A cultivated virtual plant ecosystems modeling by means of simple memoryless procedural agents is presented. The ecosystem growth is a dynamic process with a tendency to chaos. An agent can move in the ecosystem and perform certain actions defined by users in the agent description file. Agents can seed new plants, pull out weeds, water plants, and communicate by message passing to distribute their tasks. An example of a successive garden cultivation in a wild ecosystem is presented. Agents first eliminate weeds, prepare space for and lay sidewalks, plant garden flowers, and protect their development. The main contribution of the paper is to show that autonomous agents can be used as a tool for user assisted procedural modeling of highly complex scenes.

Single-chip digital cameras use an array of broad-spectrum charge-coupled devices (CCD) overlayed with a color filter array. The filter layer consists of transparent patches of red, green and blue, such that each CCD pixel captures one of these primary colors. To reconstruct a color image at the full CCD resolution, the 'missing' primary values have to be interpolated from nearby samples. We present an effective color interpolation using a simple pixel level data-dependent triangulation. This interpolation technique is applied to the commonly-used Bayer colour filter array pattern. Results show that the proposed method gives superior reconstruction quality, with smaller visual defects than other methods. Furthermore, the complexity and efficiency of the proposed method is very close to simple bilinear interpolation, making it easy to implement and fast to run.

We describe a collaborative virtual environment system for visualization of diffusion magnetic resonance imaging scans. The system represents the 3D (three-dimensional) data by arrays of polyhedra, colored by the degree of anisotropy and directed by the principal component of the diffusion tensor. Users can then collaboratively explore the data and interactively spawn tractography processes that compute tracks that depict white matter fiber pathways through the brain. These tracks are computed on a Grid service currently supporting 72 nodes on a Beowulf cluster.

Crowds are described as complex adaptive systems in artificial intelligence. The generation of crowd in real-time simulations is beyond the manual design capability. In this paper, we present an integrated animation framework for simulating the adaptive movement behaviors of crowds on large terrains. A simulation system that is developed based on the framework can be used as a powerful animation and design tool to produce realistic crowd movements procedurally. The framework integrates efficient terrain rendering techniques and path planning algorithms to enable the simulation system to handle large terrain data sets and search optimal paths for crowds to progress on complex terrains. A local alignment algorithm is developed, which utilizes a set of conventional behavioral rules to produce robust real-time coordinated motions of crowds with respect to environmental situations.

In this paper, we show how XML-based languages such as XHTML, MathML and SVG can be rendered into SVG. The SVG generated can then be displayed on a screen or printer. A variety of architectural approaches are explored and we present both server-side and client-side solutions using engines written in Java and JavaScript. Our approach enables a document containing a mixture of XHTML, MathML and SVG markup to be rendered for display. This approach has potential for the creation of scientific Web sites that frequently require a mixture of textual, mathematical and diagrammatical content.

The multi-modal information presentation integrated into the virtual environments can stimulate different senses, increase the user's sense of immersion, and the amount of information accepted and processed by the user. The increase of information may reduce the error and time taken to complete a task. This paper presents our approach for integrating 3D sound into virtual assembly environment for the investigation of the effect of visual and 3D sound feedback on assembly task-performance in virtual environments. A responsive workbench-based experimental platform that brings together technologies such as constraint-based assembly simulation, ultrasonic tracking, and 3D sound generation has been set-up. Several experiments are being conducted to explore and evaluate the effect of neutral, visual, auditory and integrated feedback mechanism on the sense of presence and task performance in the context of assembly simulation in virtual environment.

In recent years talking heads have received a great deal of interest, both in their application to natural human-computer dialogue, and their benefit to the intelligibility of synthesized speech. A model for the realistic synthesis of visual speech animation is described. Images representing the key visual speech poses (visemes) are pre-recorded and labeled. Transitions between visemes are created by using an image morphing technique based upon the use of radial basis functions. Timing information from the festival speech synthesis system is used to plan the appropriate transitions to create realistic speech animation. A model of coarticulation is included in the system to improve the realism of articulatory motion.
