This book contains a collection of selected and revised papers originally presented at the Workshop on Emerging Web Service Technology (WEWST'08) held in conjunction with the 6th European Conference on Web Services (ECOWS'08) in November 2008 in Dublin, Ireland. Acting as an extension to the ECOWS conference, the main goal of the WEWST workshop is serving as a forum for providing early exposure and much needed feedback to grow and establish original and emerging ideas within the Web Services community. The wide variety of tools, techniques, and technological solutions presented in WEWST share one common feature: they advance the current Web Services research in new directions by introducing new and sometimes controversial ideas into the field.

Multi-agent systems are one of the most exciting research areas in Artificial Intelligence. In the last ten years there has been a growing interest in the application of agent-based systems in health care. Moreover, a growing European community of researchers interested in the application of intelligent agents in health care emerged as a result of the activities within the *** European network and the agentLink III Technical Forum Group on Healthcare Applications of Intelligent agents. And specially in R&D projects funded during the FP6. Thus, this book reports on the results achieved in this area, discuss the benefits (and drawbacks) that agent-based systems may bring to medical domains and society, and also to provide a list of the research topics that should be tackled in the near future to make the deployment of health-care agent-based systems a reality. Current topics of research include communication and co-operation betweendistributed intelligent agents to manage patient care, information agents that retrieve medical information from the Internet, and multi-agent systems that assist the doctors in the tasks of monitoring and diagnosis. A lot of methodological and technical problems are beginning to be discovered by the researchers that attempt to deploy agent-based systems in the medical area; just to name a few, there does not exist a universally accepted standard medical ontology, it is difficult to integrate new agent systems with legacy software, and these new agent-based systems should take into account rapidly changing national and international laws and regulations concerning the privacy of medical data and the security of the transaction of patient information between agents. The reader will find a comprehensive view of the field and up-to-date state-of-the-art of the research in this field in Europe.

Online auctions are a platform to trade goods on the Internet. In this context, negotiation capabilities for softwareagents in continuous double auctions (CDAs) are a central concern. agents need to be able to prepare bids for and evaluate offers on behalf of the users they represent with the aim of obtaining the maximum benefit for their users. For the agents, their bids are decided according to some bidding strategy. However, in CDAs, it is a complex decision problem because of the inherent uncertainty and dynamics of the auction market. In this book, we present a new bidding strategy for agents to adopt in CDAs and propose tools to enhance the performance of existing bidding strategies in CDAs. The superior performance of the new bidding strategy as well as the tools presented in this book are illustrated through extensive experiments.

In all modern military doctrines the mission effectiveness shall be dramatically increased by the robust networking of all forces, sharing of information and distributed intelligent information processing, generating situational awareness and providing decision support. In addition, these principles also offer an effective way to improve security systems that support the fight against terrorists and organized crime. Intelligent agents are a key technology to realize such modern defence and security systems and are therefore increasingly investigated by researchers and practioners in that field. This book is a collection of recent published and refereed papers drawn from workshops and other colloquia held in various venues around the world in the last two years. Papers in this book describe work in the development of command and control systems, military communications systems, information systems, surveillance systems, autonomous vehicles, simulators and HCI. The broad nature of the application domain is matched by the diversity of techniques used in the papers that are included in the collection. The collection provides, for the first time, an overview of the most significant work being performed by the leading workers in this area. It provides a single reference point for the state of the art in the field at the moment and will be of interest to Computer Science professionals working in the defence sector, and academics and students investigating the technology of Intelligent agents that are curious to see how the technology is applied in practice. The book also provides valuable decision support for planners and strategists in defence- and security-related companies, organizations, ministries and departments.

Multi-agent Systems (MAS) are one of the most exciting research areas in Artificial Intelligence meanwhile Environmental Studies is a research area of strategic interest. Both areas can provide society with solutions for many real applications, in order to use and protect the environment. Human activities imply intervention into nature, but properly managed, these interventions can not be only ecologically sound but also favourable to the sustainable development of civilisation. The encounter between these fields is a new challenge for many researchers of both communities. This book presents a comprehensive reference of state-of-the-art efforts. Specifically, it presents current and future ways in which adaptive information technologies, techniques, protocols and architectures, such as softwareagenttechnologies and multi-agent systems, can be used to support the development of real-world agent-based systems in the area of e-Environment.

This book presents a comprehensive reference of state-of-the-art efforts and early results in the area of autonomic networking and communication. The essence of autonomic networking, and thus autonomic communications, is to enable the self-governing of services and resources within the constraints of business rules. In order to support self-governance, appropriate self-* functionality will be deployed in the network on an application-specific basis. The continuing increase in complexity of upcoming networking convergence scenarios mandates a new approach to network management. This special issue explores different ways that autonomic principles can be applied to existing and future networks. In particular, the book has 3 main parts, each of them represented by three papers discussing them from industrial and academic perspectives. The first part focuses on architectures and modeling strategies. It starts with a discussion on current standardization efforts for defining a technological neutral, architectural framework for autonomic systems and networks, followed by an insight report on how a telecommunication company utilizes autonomic principles to manage its infrastructure and finalized by a European effort to model distribution and behaviour of and for (autonomic) network management. Part two of this book is dedicated to middleware and service infrastructure as facilitators of autonomic communications. This part starts introducing a connectivity management system based on a resilient and adaptive communication middleware. The second paper of this part combines the concept of a knowledge plane with real-time demands of the military sector to regulate resources. This is followed by a profound discussion on how to the management of service access can benefit from autonomic principles, with special focus on next generation networks. Part three focuses on autonomic networks, specifically how current networks can be equipped with autonomic functionality and thus migrate

This book presents the design, implementation and validation of a value-added supportive infrastructure for Semantic Web based business application services across mobile and fixed networks, applied to an emergency healthcare application. This infrastructure has been realized by the CASCOM European research project. For end users, the CASCOM framework provides seamless access to semantic Web services anytime, anywhere, by using any mobile computing device. For service providers, CASCOM offers an innovative development platform for intelligent and mobile business application services in the Semantic Web. The essential approach of CASCOM is the innovative inter-disciplinary combination of intelligent agent, Semantic Web, peer-to-peer, and mobile computing technology. Conventional peer-to-peer computing environments are extended with components for mobile and wireless communication. Semantic Web services are provided by peer softwareagents, which exploit the coordination infrastructure to efficiently operate in highly dynamic environments. The generic coordination support infrastructure includes efficient communication means, support for context-aware adaptation techniques, as well as flexible, resource-efficient service discovery, execution, and composition planning. The book has three main parts. First, the state-or-the-art is reviewed in related research fields. Then, a full proof-of-concept design and implementation of the generic infrastructure is presented. Finally, quantitative and qualitative analysis is presented on the basis of the field trials of the emergency application.
