Analysis of named entity queries in web search logs

摘      要：Analyzing web search queries is a foundational task in information retrieval. According to previous research, a large percentage of web queries are or contain name entities, noted as name entity queries. However, no existing work has examined the properties of such queries systematically. In this paper, we investigate the distribution and the characteristics of name entity queries. We also analyze and summarize the roles the name entities play for name entity queries. In detail, we examined the name entity category distribution in name entity queries and found the dominating categories are consistent across different periods. In addition, we proposed the role taxonomy of name entities for queries by analyzing the semantic patterns within queries. It shows that these roles are highly related to different query search intents. The observations and preliminary conclusions we present in this paper could help understanding query search intents in future. © 2011 by Binary Information Press.
