摘 要:The paper outlines the general systems aspects and the organisation of nonmechanical optical memories and discusses technical advances with regard to relevant components, their implementation and the state of the art of this technology. Two basic system concepts are discussed: localized optical storage, and holographic storage. Two integrated techniques for optical memories are described: a page composer for holographic storage, and a new magnetooptic material for optical storage which uses ion milling of iron garnet to produce 10 multiplied by 10 mu m**2 storage cells 5. 5 mu m thick ″islands″ separated by 10 mu m wide, 5. 5 mu m deep grooves. Each ″island″ is switchable individually with respect to its magnetization. Expected performance features are compared with those of alternative technologies, including conventional magnetic systems, semiconductors and magnetic bubbles.
