摘      要:A 36-year-old woman presented with a three-day history of sore throat, cough productive of blood-tinged mucus, shaking chills, and temperatures as high as 40.5 degrees C. After taking acetaminophen, she was well enough to go to work the next day but continued to have a sore throat and cough. Feeling increasingly weak and tired, she saw her family physician, who prescribed a five-day course of azithromycin in addition to the acetaminophen. The following day, she vomited four or five times. The vomitus was yellow, with no visible blood. Her neck glands were swollen, and swallowing was so painful that she could only tolerate clear liquids. She had no history of HIV risk factors, tuberculosis, rash, arthralgias, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or urinary symptoms. Her last menses occurred one week prior to admission.
