摘      要：This British Standard specifies the UK 7-bit coded character set which is derived from the ISO 7-bit coded character set as described in BS ISO/IEC 646 : 1991. This standard specifies a character set for general use in the UK, including control characters, letters, digits, punctuation signs and other symbols, the coded representation of each character, and the acronyms for the control characters of the set. The functional characteristics of the control characters of the set are not specified here but are specified in BS 7204 : 1989 (identical with ISO 6429 : 1988). The character set may be regarded as a basic alphabet in an abstract sense, applicable to all Roman alphabets. It is primarily intended for the interchange of information, both nationally and internationally, between data processing systems and association equipment, and for use in message transmission systems. This standard makes provision for the direct representation of 128 characters, each represented by a 7-bit pattern, and provides facilities for code extension for use when its 128 characters are insufficient for a particular application. The code specified in this standard is fully in conformity with ISO/IEC 646 : 1991 by exercising the options permitted in that standard (see 8.3 of BS ISO/IEC 646 : 1991). The fount design of the characters is not specified in this standard.
