Our aim was to investigate the efficacy of correction of an alveolar cleft with distraction osteogenesis using anchorage with a tooth-microimplant joint in a canine model, which was established in 12 adult mongrel dogs that were subsequently randomised into two groups(n=6 in each). The first group comprised dogs that had osteogenesis using anchorage with a tooth(tooth group), while in the second,anchorage with tooth-microimplant joint(microimplant group) was used. All animals were killed one month after completion of distraction. Samples were collected for gross observation and histological examination. There was a significant difference in the degree of movement of the anchorage teeth in the transport discs between the 2 groups(P<0.01). There was less prominent inclination and shift of the natural teeth in the transport disc and less bony resorption around the root in the microimplant group than in the tooth group. These changes were less remarkable in the microimplant group. Treatment of alveolar cleft by distraction osteogenesis using anchorage with a tooth-microimplant joint is practical, and yields better results.

Purpose: To discuss an effective surgical treatment of a subtype of trigeminal neuralgia with descending palatine neuralgia of the maxillary ***: Nine patients, who suffered from trigeminal neuralgia with descending palatine neuralgia of the maxillary division, received neurotomy and avulsion of the descending palatine nerve in the pterygopalatine fossa via the greater palatine foramenepterygopalatine canal approach. Seven of the patients had a recurrence of descending palatine neuralgia after they received treatment of maxillary neuralgia with neurotomy and avulsion of the infraorbital nerve;two patients were diagnosed with descending palatine neuralgia of the maxillary division in our *** follow-up was conducted. Results: Pain in the palate disappeared;all patients felt numb and paresthetic in the area innervated by the trigeminal nerve, with no pain. During the 3 e36 months of follow-up, no recurrence occurred. Conclusions:Descending palatine neurotomy in the pterygopalatine fossa via the greater palatine foramenepterygopalatine canal approach is a simple, safe and effective way to treat a subtype of trigeminal neuralgia e descending palatine neuralgia

Management of high-flow arteriovenous malformation(AVM) in the oral and maxillofacial region, one of the greatest challenges facing oral and maxillofacial surgeons, is patient-specific in almost all cases. The aim of this study was to review our experience with superselective intra-arterial embolization followed by surgical resection and bone wax packing(BWP) of the bone cavity and curettage to manage AVM. Sixteen patients with AVM of the oral and maxillofacial region were included in this study. All patients were evaluated with preoperative angiography, and superselective intra-arterial embolization of the lesions was done in the same session by the same interventional radiologists. Forty-eight to 72 hours later, surgical resection of the soft-tissue vascular lesions and BWP of the bone cavity and curettage were performed. There were no complications related to either the preoperative angiography or the embolization procedure. The pulsation and noise were absent, and the hemorrhage disappeared. Followed up after the surgical treatment for a mean of38 months(range, 7-63 months), 14 cases were controlled and 2 were improved, and no case was persistent or recurred. Superselective intra-arterial embolization followed by surgical resection and BWP of the bone cavity and curettage was an effective therapy in the oral and maxillofacial region.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma(NHL) is a malignant proliferation involving the lymphoid tissue. It is reported that about 30% of cases arise in extranodal *** lymphoma of bone is an unusual extranodal presentation of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that accounts for approximately 5% of all extranodal lymphomas. In the involvement of head and neck region,the maxilla is the most commonly affected location and the mandible ranks second. Primary NHL of the mandible is rare and is frequently misdiagnosed as a dental lesion or bone infecion, due to its polymorphic symptomatology and the similarity of the presentation with other dental diseases. Non specific clinico-radiological features accounts for the difficulty of and delay in diagnosis. This report details a case of primary NHL that involved the mandible region in a 55-year-old man. Spontaneous chronic local pain associated with mandibular tumefaction are the manifest symptoms in the present case but symptoms do not subside after specific treatments as inflammatory lesion or trigeminal *** panoramic dental X-ray found an osteolytic lesion of the horizontal branch of the mandible, CT and MRI also showed destruction of the mandible assiciated with swelling of soft tissue. Biospy indicated of malignant lymphoma and immunohistochemical studies confirmed the diagnosis as diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. No other evidence of the disease was found except in the *** patient was transferred to the department of internal medicine and treated with systemic chemotherapy and the condition went into remission. As primary NHL of the mandible is often initially misdiagnosed, particular care should be taken when unexplained pain and swelling are present from the first visit and a biospy should be mandatory in those treatment-resistant cases.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of the preoperative platelet-lymphocyte ratio and the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma undergoing surgery. Methods: In this study, 306 patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma who had surgery were enrolled. The optimal cutoff value of platelet-lymphocyte ratio and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio was determined by receiver operating(ROC) curve analysis. The prognostic significance of both markers was determined by uni-and multivariate analysis. Results: The results showed that high neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio were classified using a cut-off value of 2.7 and 135, respectively, based on ROC curve analysis. Only platelet-lymphocyte ratio was associated with decreased disease-free survival [hazard ratio(HR) = 2.237;95 % confidence interval(CI): 1.401–3.571;P =0.001] and overall survival [HR = 2.022;95 % CI: 1.266–3.228;P = 0.003] by both uni-and multivariate analysis. Conclusion: In conclusions, preoperative platelet-lymphocyte ratio is superior to neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio as an independent indicator in predicting disease-free survival and overall survival in patients who undergo oral cancer resection for oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Purpose: Maxillary sinus membrane(MSM) elevation is a common surgical technique for increasing bone height in the posterior maxilla prior to dental implant placement. However, the biological nature of bone regeneration in MSM remains largely unidentified. Methods: In this study, MSM tissue was obtained from16 individuals during orthognathic surgery and used to isolate MSM stem cells(MSMSCs) by singlecolony selection and STRO-1 cell sorting. The cell characteristics in terms of colony-forming ability, cell surface antigens,multi-differentiation potential and in vivo implantation were all evaluated. Results: It was found that MSMSCs were of mesenchymal origin and positive for mesenchymal stem cell(MSC) markers such as STRO-1, CD146, CD29 and CD44;furthermore,under defined culture conditions, MSMSCs were able to form mineral deposits and differentiate into adipocytes and chondrocytes. When transplanted into immunocompromised rodents, MSMSCs showed the capacity to generate bone-like tissue and, importantly, maintain their MSC characteristics after in vivo ***: These findings provide cellular and molecular evidence that MSM contains stem cells that show functional potential in bone regeneration for dental implant.

Purpose: The present study aimed at evaluating the effects of Cdc6 downregulation on the proliferation of Tca8113 cells. Methods: Two lentiviral vectors(KD1 and KD2) expression Cdc6 si RNA were constructed and then infected into Tca8113 cells. Real-time PCR and Western blot analysis were performed to detect the mRNA and protein expression of Cdc6. MTT assays were employed to delineate the growth curves, and flow cytometry was performed to assess cell-cycle progression and apoptosis in Tca8113 cells. Results: Following infection with the lentiviral vectors, real-time PCR and Western blot analysis revealed that Cdc6 expression was markedly suppressed in Tca8113 cells. When compared with the negative control group, the mRNA expression of Cdc6 was reduced by 50% and 65% and the protein expression by 65.87% and 79.38% in cells harboring KD1 or KD2, respectively. Cell growth was slowed, and the growth inhibition rate was 25.84% and 30.34% in Tca8113 cells following infection with KD1 or KD2, respectively. In addition,cell-cycle progression was altered. In KD-infected Tca8113 cells, the proportion of cells in the S phase was markedly reduced, but the proportion in the G1 phase was significantly increased;this was accompanied by an increase in cell ***: Downregulation of Cdc6 effectively inhibited the proliferation of Tca8113 cells.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of simvastatin/methylcellulose gel on bone regeneration in alveolar defects in miniature pigs. Methods: Alveolar defects were produced in 32 teeth(the third and fourth premolars) of 4 miniature pigs. The 32 experimental teeth were divided into 5 groups comprising control(C) and treatment(T) teeth: ⑴ empty defects without gel(group C0, n = 4);⑵ defects injected with methylcellulose gel(group C1, n=4);⑶ defects injected with 0.5 mg/50 μL simvastatin/methylcellulose gel(group T1, n=8);⑷defects injected with 1.5 mg/50 μL simvastatin/methylcellulose gel(group T2, n=8);⑸ defects injected with 2.2 mg/50 μL simvastatin/methylcellulose gel(group T3,n=8). Every week after surgery, the furcation sites were injected once with gel. At the eighth week after surgery, the 4 pigs were sacrificed and underwent macroscopic observation, descriptive histologic examination, and regenerate bone quantitative histologic examination. Statistical analysis consisted of a single-factor, randomized,and controlled design analysis of variance, and the LSD t test was used. Results: At 8 weeks after surgery, the defect sites in the treatment groups were completely filled in with new bone and fibrous tissue. There was little new bone in the C0 and C1 groups,and only a small number of osteoblasts and proliferative vessels could be seen on microscopic examination. Conclusions: Miniature pigs are an ideal experimental animal for establishing a model of alveolar defects using a surgical method. Local application of simvastatin/methylcellulose gel can stimulate the regeneration of alveolar bone in furcation defect sites, because it promotes the proliferation of osteoblasts. The best dose of simvastatin gel to stimulate bone regeneration is 0.5 mg.
