The extensive economic reforms, rapid economic growth, and profound structural changes have imposed a great impact on China's urban land use over the last three decades. Nighttime images from Defense Meteorological Satellite Program's Operational Linescan System (DMSP-OLS) were used to examine the pattern and trend of urban expansion in China between 1993 and 2003. Using statistical methods, we estimate the appropriate threshold for extracting urban areas from nighttime images in China. Then several pattern metrics were used to analyze the pattern of urban expansion. The results show that (1) China's urban area expanded at a rate of 6500 km2 yr-1;and the urban areas expanded first loosely and then compacted;(2) most of the increased urban areas are developed around the existed cities, urban areas developed around the main road or sparsely occupy low ratio;(3) the expanded rate of urban area around existed cites is higher that that of around main road. Finally, three hotspot areas (Bohai Rim, Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta) were analyzed. This article serve as a basis for better understanding of the contemporary China's dramatic urbanization and it also indicates that nighttime image is a useful dataset for making rapid assessment of urban expansion in developing countries.
