The feeding behavior,food composition and alimentary morphology of 13 species Oxudercine Gobies were investigated in relation to their *** gobies not only exhibit various feeding behaviors but also occupy various niches in intertidal *** feeding habits of the fish are closely related to their emergence ability:Aquatic and semi-terrestrial genera Apocryptodon,Oxuderces, Pseudapocryptes and Boleophthalmus are herbivores,they are restricted to water pools around their burrows and utilize diatoms or blue-green algae nearby;more terrestrial genera Periophthalmodon and Periophthalmus are carnivorous,they can tolerant long-time emerging and wander on the open mudflats or river shore to hunt preys;semi-terrestrial Scartelaos are omnivorous,exploiting both diatoms and animal items which are adherent to substratum *** shape and arrangement of teeth,as well as the length and winding types of intestine are closely associated with the food habits in Oxudercine ***,the occurrence of large,recurved,canine teeth in omnivorous and herbivorous species seem to be related with territorial *** relative gut lengths of all oxudereine gobies are much smaller compared With those of aquatic *** difference suggests that body weight is minimized by means of shorten of intestine as an adaptation for terrestrial *** specializations,dietary choice,and digestive mechanisms related to alimentary morphology and life modes in oxudercine gobies were also discussed.

Anguillid eel is a catadromous fish,spawning in the ocean and growing in the freshwater river. There are four species of anguillid eels in Taiwan,Japanese eel(Anguilla japonica),***, *** pacifica and *** them,Japanese eel is the most abundant,making up 93 -99% of the total elver catch,followed by ***(1-7%). The other two species are very rarely *** eel production in the river of Taiwan is very few. More than 90 % of the eel in the market comes from *** the eel aquaculture industry in Taiwan was developed in 1965,the catch of the eel for the aquaculture is insufficient to meet the ***,we imported the Japanese eel elvers from Japan,Korea and China's *** the last decade we even imported American and European elvers for aquaculture,but did not succeed. To increase the recruitment of the elver,we have attempted to release hormone-induced spawners since ***,the effectiveness of stock enhancement is *** the other hand,to increase the catchability of the elver in the wild,we investigated the daily catch of the elver to understand the upstream behavior of elvers in the *** conducted mark-recapture of elvers with fluorescence dye and found that the exploitation rate of the elver in the estuary was very high,45-75% of the elver were caught before upstream and also found that the biological rhythm of upstream migration of the elvers followed the lunar cycle in the coastal waters but semilunar in the estuary,and the annual catch of the elver showed a cyclic fluctuation in every 10,4.3 and 2-3 years corresponding to the fluctuation of sunspots,Kuroshio Current and ENSO(El Ni(?)o-South Oscillation).Meanwhile,from the examination of daily growth increment in otolith of the elver,we found that the Japanese eel larvae, leptocephali,took approximately 100 days to drift with the oceanic currents(North Equatorial and Kuroshio Currents)from the spawning ground in the western Mariana

Historical biogeographical analyses of freshwater fishes provide a natural link between the geological and biotic *** assess the phylogeographical pattern in South China,we examined the genetic structures of many freshwater fishes,Acrossocheilus paradoxus,Aphyocypris kikuchii, Pararasbora moltrechti,Spinibarbus hollandi,Varicorhinus alticorpus,Cobitis sinensis,Sinibrama macrops,Varicorhinus barbatulus,and Zacco platypus based on mitochondrial cytochrome b and D-loop *** the species originated from North region,two migratory routes were identified, i.e.,one to Pearl River in the Late Tertiary,and the other via ZheMin subregion to Hainan afterward. Within the species originated from South region,the main routes of colonization were likely from Northeast India to Southeast Asia and ***,ancestral populations expand from South China across *** to East *** Taiwan,freshwater fish probably reached the drainages at least from two mainland refugia during the last glacial *** colorizations resulted in high levels of genetic diversity in the *** results also suggest that Central Mountain Range did not act as a barrier to dispersal of the freshwater fishes between western and eastern of Taiwan.

Effects of water trophic status on feeding,growth and food utilization of Hemiculter leucisculus (exotic fish for Fuxian Lake)and Anabarilius grahami(native fish for Fuxian Lake)were studied in this experiment in order to compare their tolerance to *** were reared in three types of water(LTS,the low-trophic-status water;MTS,the moderate-trophic-status water;and HTS,the high-trophic-status water).The group reared in LTS also served as the control of the groups reared in MTS and HTS for each *** growth rate(SGR),feed conversion efficiency(FCE),protein retention efficiency(PRE)and energy retention efficiency(ERE)of the group reared in MTS were all higher than those of the groups reared in LTS and HTS for both *** and *** of *** reared in HTS was significantly lower than those reared in LTS and MTS;but EREs of A. grahami reared in MTS and HTS were significantly higher than that reared in *** percentages increase in feeding rate(FR),SGR,FCE,PRE and ERE over control of *** reared in MTS and HTS were lower than those of *** reared in the same type of *** results indicate that *** is less tolerant to eutrophication than *** in the aspect of feeding,growth and food utilization.

The Japanese eel(Anguilla japonica)is an economically important aquaculture species in Taiwan,and fish farmers mostly still depend on juvenile eels(elvers)collected in the estuaries. Recently,populations of temperate eels,including the Japanese eel,have declined world-wide,which raises concerns about eel resource management and *** increase elver recruitment, hormone-injected adult eels have been released every year since 1976 by the Taiwan Fishery Research *** to date few studies on the population dynamics of eels in Taiwan have been documented. Thus we attempted to estimate the vital parameters,such as population size,fishing and natural mortality of Japanese eel in the downstream region of the Kao-Ping River in southwest Taiwan by the mark-recapture method.A total of 867 cultured and wild yellow eels were tagged on September 28, 2005,including 561 individuals marked with electronic chips and 306 individuals marked by clipping their pectoral *** recaptures were reported by *** to February 2006,a total of 23 marked eels had been returned among the 866 eels caught in the *** abundance in the recapture area was estimated as 3,380(95% CI:1,670～6,842)eels by the Chapman method,which was much smaller than an estimate made in 2001 in the same area(7,364 eels).This indicates that the eel population in the study area has ***,a recovery plan,including controls of fishing, restocking and habitat restoration,is urgently needed.

Pelteobagrus fulvidraco were introduced unintentionally to the Lake Fuxian as alien specie about the 1990s,and presented a relative stable output in the survey catches since *** age of specimens selected was between 0-5 years for females and 0-7 years for males according to reading vertebrae. The growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy equation were L=294.68 mm,k=0.2476 year,t= -0.0298 year,W=209.93 g in male and L=257.13 mm,k=0.2219 year,t=-0.3329 year,W= 184.45 g in *** differences were found in the sex ratio in favor of male（1:1.64）.The estimated TL is in 128.14 mm for female and 135.99 mm for male,*** Mean absolute fecundity（F）was 2374 oocytes,ranging from 431 to *** reproductive activity extended from mid-May to end of August,with peaks in *** type of reproduction was batch *** instantaneous coefficients of total mortality（Z）and natural mortality（M）were assessed 0.99 yearand 0.43 year for male,1.22 yea and 0.40 year for *** are sought by comparing traits from that of source *** study documents the plasticity of slow growth, large adult body size,descending fecundity and delayed maturity to cope with environmental variability,and population dimension will maintain at a high level in successive years in Lake Fuxian.

Expressed sequence tag(EST)analysis is an efficient tool for gene discovery and for profiling gene *** order to isolate functional genes involved in reproduction and endocrine regulation and to reveal their evolutionary mechanisms in Chinese sturgeon(Acipenser sinensis),a chondrostean fish with a history of 1.4 hundred million years,we constructed its pituitary cDNA library.A total of 989 random clones were sequenced from the library,and 944 clones of them(with insert lengths of＞ 150 base pairs)were compared with sequences in the GenBank *** all the 944 EST clones,461(48.83%)clones were identified as known genes and 483(51.17%)as unknown genes. The 461 clones of known gene products represent transcripts of 132 *** categorization indicated that the most abundantly expressed functional gene,the proopiomelanocortin(POMC), accounted for almost 10.17% of the overall expression,indicating its important function in the pituitary. Sequence analysis of EST clones also revealed the presence of 5 growth or reproduction related genes including glycoprotein hormone alpha subunit protein(EC268299),somatolactin(EC268310), growth hormone(EC268332),POMC(EC268375)and somatotropin(EC268384),which may be valuable for further functional studies on molecule regulation mechanism of reproduction regulation and sex differentiation in Chinese ***,the expression patterns of 7 unknown genes were analyzed in various tissues,such as heart,liver,spleen,kidney,muscle,testes,ovary and pituitary. Three different categories of expression patterns were observed from *** unknown ESTs, such as EG009334,EG009337,EG009338 and EG009340,were detected to be pituitary-specific,or pituitary and ovary-specific *** studies on their functions will be very useful for better understanding the mechanisms of sturgeon reproduction biology and endocrinology.

There are various techniques to identify ploidy in fish but among these methods,chromosome counting is accurate and complex,and the measurement of erythrocyte dimensions is the least *** this study,the use of erythrocyte size measurement by light microscopy was evaluated as a possible alternative to chromosome counting for identifying tetraploid and diploid *** (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus)were obtained from four populations of Hubei province(Wuhan, Shashi,Enshi,Zhijiang),30 of each *** chromosome number of loach from four populations was determined through the chromosome metaphase prepared from kidney cells by the PHA colchicine hypotonic-air drying technique and Giemsa *** was found that loach from Wuhan and Shashi were tetraploid,and those from Enshi and Zhijiang were *** was collected with a heparinized syringe from the caudal vessel and blood smears were ***-dried smears were fixed for 1 min in absolute methanol,stained with Wright's-Giemsa fluid for 8 min,and washed twice in distilled water for 1 *** length and width of the cell and nucleus of 100 randomly selected erythrocytes were measured under 1,000xmagnification using an ocular micrometer fitted inside the eyepiece of a Motic compound *** length,cell width,nucleus length and nucleus width were *** area and volume of both the erythrocyte and nucleus were computed following the formula for ellipsoids or oblate *** discriminate analysis, results showed that tetraploid loach had significantly larger erythrocytes and nuclear measurements than those of diploid loach(P＜0.01).Among the indices of the erythrocyte and erythrocyte nucleus, the size of erythrocyte nucleus had the accuracy and reliability for identifying diplod and tetraploid over 90.6% in *** was found that erythrocyte measurement was more convenient than chromosome ***,it is concluded that the index of erythrocyte nucleus size measu

All true eels present a homocercal caudal,which different from the primitive bowfins,megalops, and *** white base and black margin,rear dorsal and anal fins confluent with caudal fin develop a unique and truncate-like tail,which make synaphobranchid eels different from other eels,while all true eels seems like the same when judge from their outer ***,further studies are proceeding on the skeleton which interiorly supported the caudal fin,to find more strong evidences standing for the above hypothesis,meanwhile,to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships of the Anguilliform fishes. Later,17 species of synaphobranchid eels including Simenchelys parasitca,Synaphobranchus affinis, Synaphobranchus kaupii,Synaphobranchus oregoni,Synaphobranchus bathybius,Synaphobranchus sp.,Ilyophis brunneus,Meadia abyssale,Meadia roseni,Dysommina rugosa,Dysomma anguillare, Dysomma dolichosomatum,Dysomma goslinei,Dysomma melanurum,Dysomma opisthoproctus, Dysorama polycatodon,and Dysomma longirostrum,and other true eels,***,Megalops,Elops, albulids,notacanthids,anguillids,muraenids,chlopsids,myrocongrids,congrids,ophichthids, muraenesocids,and nettastomatids,clupids etc.,were checked and studied with the anatomical microscope Leica MS,x-ray diagram,and double-stained *** comparisons with the general features and skeletal structure,this study shows(1)fusion of uroneural and urostyle,reduced hypurals and epurals developed a reduced tail,which sharing by most eels,undoubtedly,a monophyletic group.(2)Synaphobranchid eels sharing,a CLC-caudal-fin and elevated hypural 3-4-5, and fusion of hypural 4 and 5 supporting 12-19 soft rays,constructing a well-developed and distinct tail as mentioned above,while bowfins,megalops,elops,albulids share a heterocercal caudal,more than 5 separated hypurals,and more than 19 soft-fin rays,and most eels' caudal present FS-caudal-fin, lowered hypural 3-4-5,and separated or reduced hypural 4 and 5 supporting 6-13 soft ***, Synap

The gasbladder in Otophysi fish(e.g.,minnows,catfish)and suprabranchial chamber in Anabantoidei fish(e.g.,Siamese fighting fish)have been proved to aid in hearing *** is demonstrated that the gas inside these two gas-holding structures transmits sound pressure component of the passing sound wave indirectly(via Weberian ossicles,in the gasbladder of cyprinids)or directly (via suprabrachanchial chamber)into inner ear and hence the hearing ability of these two groups of fish is *** is unique that clariids(e.g.,airbreathing or walking catfish,a member of otophsan) contains both Webarian ossicle-linked gasbladder and suprabranchial chamber ***,the respective role of each gas-holding structure contributing to the overall hearing ability of clariid fish remains *** present study used a walking catfish(Clarias batcharus order:Siluriformes) as the model animal to investigate respective role of each gas-holding structure in contributing to the overall hearing ability of this *** auditory brainstem response (ABR)method was used to measure evoked potentials from fish receiving treatments to remove gas from either gasbladder or suprabranchial chamber or control group of *** results revealed that the hearing thresholds in between 400-3,000 Hz were significantly elevated after the gas inside the suprabranchial chamber was removed,yet it exerted no significant effect on hearing at higher frequencies(4,000-8,000 Hz). However,after the gas in the gasbladder was removed,significant changes in thresholds were observed at the frequencies 400-6,000 Hz while no ABR potential could be recorded at 7,000 and 8,000 Hz even when the maximal acoustic stimuli were *** of gas from either gasbladder or suprabranchial chamber posed no difference in hearing ability below 1,500 ***,deflated gasbladder caused more significant elevation of thresholds than degassed suprabranchial chamber for frequencies above 1,500 *** findings implied
