Synaptic transmission is conducted by neurotransmitters released from presynaptic nerve terminals by an exocytosis of synaptic vesicles. Neurotransmitter release is regulated by various protein kinases and by phosphatidyl inositol metabolism. Phenylarsine oxide(PAO), which inhibits both PI-4 kinase and protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP), suppressed neurotransmitter release from adrenal chromaffin cells and rat brain synaptosomes. In the present study, we investigated the mechanisms of PAO-mediated inhibition of neurotransmitter release using clonal rat pheochromocytoma PC12 cells.
