HCMV is the most significant viral cause of birth *** HCMV infection causes central nervous system (CNS) structural abnormalities such as microencephaly and hydrocephalus, mostly symptomatic at birth, and functional disorders including sensorineural hearing loss, mental retardation, learning disabilities and seizures, mostly asymptomatic at *** asymptomatic at birth subsequently can develop brain disorders including mental retardation and sensorineural hearing loss.A possible mechanism for the latter infections is persistent infection.

Fourteen open reading frames (ORFs) have been identified in the severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV) *** 3a of SARS-CoV codes for a recently identified transmembrane protein, but its function remains *** this study, we confirmed the 3a protein expression and investigated its localization at the surface of SARS-CoV-infected or 3a-cDNA-transfected *** experiments showed that 3a protein can form a homo-tetramer complex through inter-protein disulfide bridges, providing a clue to ion channel function.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a febrile respiratory *** disease has been etiologically linked to a novel coronavirus that has been named the SARS-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV), with positive strand RNA genome of approximately 29.7Kb.A complex transcriptional, translational and posttranslational regulatory mechanisms are involved in coronavirus genome replication and *** expression of genomic information of SARS CoV involves synthesis of a nested set of subgenomic RNAs (sgRNAs) by discontinuous *** SARS CoV-infected cells, 10 sgRNAs including 2 novel ones were identified, which were predicted to be functional in the expression of 12 open reading frames located in the 3'-one third of the genome.

The flaviviruses dengue (DEN), yellow fever (YF), Japanese encephalitis (JE), West Nile (WN), and tickbome encephalitis (TBE) viruses are emerging or reemerging pathogens, and are classified as Category A-C priority pathogens. No effective therapy is currently available for clinical treatment of flavivirus infections. Here I present three developments toward flavivirus drug discovery. (1) Using reverse genetic systems of flavivirus, we h ave developed a set of high-throughput screening (HTS) assays. A luciferase reporler was engineered into a self-replicating subgenomic replicon (containing a deletion of' viral structural genes) and into a full-length viral genome to monitor viral replication. Potential inhibitors could be identified through suppression of luciferase signals upon compound incubation.
