In the first part,I discuss whether Chinese itself is a"harder"language than others,like English.I suggest that both from a theoretical and empirical point of view,the answer is"no".I then discuss what makes second languages(L2) hard to learn,stressing the fact that difficulties arise when learners are forced to make choices(like tones,gender of nouns,tenses,etc.) which do not exist in their native language(L1).I suggest that while Chinese contains difficult choices(like tones) for foreign learners,especially English speakers,it would be wrong to claim that in sum, learners of Chinese have more choices to make than learners of English or other ***, I discuss how educators must take these expectations into consideration in order to teach effectively.
