PURPOSE: Multidrug resistance (MDR) and apoptotic resistance are main obstacles of *** resistance (MDR) is often characterized by the expression ofP-glycoprotein (P-gp), a 170-KD ATP-dependent drug efflux protein. Functional P-gp can alsoconfer resistance to sequentially activate caspase-8 and -3 dependent apoptosis induced by a rangeof different stimuli, including tumor necrosis and chemotherapeutical drugs such as paclitaxel andvincristine. A promising approach to solve the problems is to utilize a nontoxic and potent agentwith the reversal of MDR and apoptotic resistance, the combination of anticancer drugs with themodulator increases the anticancer effect. Experiments were carried out to examine tetrandrine

AIM: Previous studies showed that cigarette smoking was associated with gastric *** is one of the most representative compounds in cigarette smoke, which has long beenconsidered to exhibit many of the tobacco effects including those in the gastrointestinal tract. Thisstudy reports the new actions of nicotine on wound repair and also on the tumorigenesis in thegastrointestinal tract, which could have signifcant clinical implications in humans. METHOD:Three types of cell lines, including the normal gastric epithelial cell (RGM-1) and the two gastric(AGS) and colon (SW116) carcinoma cell lines were employed in the study. A nude mousemodel studying the tumor growth was also used to examine the tumorigenic effect of nicotine invivo. Cell proliferation was determined by the [H]-thymidine incorporation in the cells. To studythe mechanisms for wound repair, the activity and the protein expression of the mediators
