The medical humanities is a fairly recent field of practice,and is only now developing(if at all) into a field of research[1].The medical humanities have two interconnected principle *** first,which prompted the field into being,in North America,concerns the cultivation of humanistic capacities such as empathy,reflective practice,and imaginative engagement in medical students[2].The second was to more fully explore the humanistic,existential and emotional qualities of illness and health care,providing an outlet for doctors and patients to give healing expression to the distresses of confronting serious illness[3].Both aims concerned the challenge for doctors to relate to those who are radically different to themselves - whose suffering has unknowable qualities,and who are culturally defined as 'Other' to the healthy and to medical *** strength of the arts and health movement in the area of disability studies, for example,is testament to the need to continually explore and challenge the Othering of those with different kinds of bodies.
