As China's environmental footprint has grown to affect nearly all aspects of global environmental health, China's role in global environmental policy has become the object of increasingly intense scrutiny. This analysis assesses China's performance to date and concludes that, despite significant strengths, it remains uneven across different environmental issue areas. The analysis then considers the implications of these observations for China's future role as a global environmental actor in international context with particular focus on the US-China relationship.

This presentation is based "events observed" and "lessons learned" compiled from my professional life that began with the dawning of the environmental movement in the United States, has included a 22-year career with the US Environmental Protection Agency, and continues today with nearly a decade of living and teaching environmental science and English in China. This experience provides a singular vantage point from which to view, assess, and project the state of the environment of the world and China's role therein. The experience also provides examples that will illustrate the following generalizations.

In a recent multidisciplinary workshop on global water crisis attended by participants with background in history, art, anthropology, religion, science and engineering, three consensus views emerged: 1) The water crisis is a major challenge to humanity, and has both science and human dimensions. 2) Governance, political will, and constitutional guidelines are key to a sustainable water future. 3) Technological advances will solve the water crisis for the long term but the problems of water shortage, water pollution, and waterborne disease will intensify - the situation will get worse before it gets better. This presentation will elaborate on these viewpoints in the context of the presenter's research work addressing water scarcity and eco-environmental problems in north and northwest China.

Globalization and economic dynamics have forced individuals and organizations to search for new ways to strengthen their competitive advantages. It becomes crucial to help learners in educational institutions and knowledge workers in organizations to improve their capabilities for self-directed and life-long learning. Technology innovations including MOOCs have provided tremendous opportunities to learning and knowledge sharing with global engagement, while they also bring challenges to existing educational systems. Careful research is needed to investigate how technologies can transform learning and knowledge sharing into more effective and sustainable practices.

The New Model of Great Power Relations is usually applied to relations between China and the United States. It is clearly designed to avoid a potential war between China, the rising power, and America, the established power. There are many examples in the European historical experience of warfare arising when the leader of an international system fears the rise of a challenger. In the case of Sino-American relations the most likely location for such a military conflict is in East Asia. What China defines as its core interests as applied to its claims to sovereign and territorial rights in maritime East Asia challenges the claims of several of America's allies and partners.

A broad transformation in how people understand, represent and manage water can be identified as having begun in many countries in the late 20th century. Associated with terms such as "the new water paradigm", "the end of the state-hydraulic paradigm" and "the crisis of modern water", this transformation has many aspects, including the emergence of new ways defining, approaching and managing water conflicts. In this paper, I adopt a broad historical perspective to consider how the definition and management of water conflicts has changed over the past several decades. In the paper, I also attempt to provide a typology of new and emerging ways of understanding and responding to water conflicts at various scales.

A desire to escape the extreme forms of nationalism that had devastated the continent of Europe in two world wars led to the signing, in 1957, of the Treaty of Rome "determined to lay the foundations of an ever closer union among the peoples of Europe". In the 55 years since then, the European Union has expanded from six to 28 countries and its structures, institutions and role have extended from a common market to encompass a wide range of policy areas and the establishment of the Euro as a single European currency. It has been one of the bravest ongoing experiments in global regionalism in the history of humankind and has delivered over half a century of peace, stability and prosperity.

In this paper we employ nation-wide public opinion survey data and recent province-level statistics to analyze and explain individual citizens’ concern for environmental protection in China. Drawing insights from recent studies and using a series of regression analyses, we demonstrate that the levels of Chinese citizen’s concern for environmental protection are not only rooted in individual’s social-demographic characteristics and personal experience of pollution events, but also affected by regional macroeconomic conditions, local environmental risks, and provincial government investment in pollution treatments. Implications of the major findings from this study are discussed in conclusion.
