Planners, geographers, and economists use many sizes and types of areas for spatial analysis. The rationale for defining particular areas for analysis rests on a mix of externalities and governance. The analysis presented here addresses the distinction between metropolitan and megapolitan areas. Metropolitan areas are based on the concept of spatially integrated markets—especially for nontradable goods—whereas megapolitan definitions largely lack an economic framework. Neither metropolitan nor megapolitan areas normally have overarching governance structures. Megapolitan areas are the appropriate areas of analysis for issues such as large scale environmental problems and the planning of large scale infrastructure.

History of the Silk Road is a history of the conflict, communication, interaction, and integration between eastern and western civilizations. As an important connection for the economic and culture interaction on the Eurasia-continent, the rise and fall of the Eurasian civilizations, contacts and conflicts among these civilizations greatly influence the condition of the Silk Road. Today, a post-cold war era, the importance of the ancient Silk Road emerges once again. Peace and development are the themes of the times. In this presentation, Professor Webster reflects on the science that has helped improve the health of cities during the 20 th century and asks what science is emerging to guide healthy city-building in the 21 st century. He presents collaborative work currently underway at the University of Hong Kong's HKUrban Lab, University of Cambridge and Cardiff/Oxford Universities that will lay a conceptual and empirical base for evidence-based healthy city planning for the coming decades;and he calls for an extension of the approach to build a national platform for urban planning-health research and practice in China.

How can deliberate evildoers, who are content with their depraved lifestyle, change their attitude and desire to become virtuous? This paper explores Thomas Aquinas' s answers to this question by studying his adaptation of Aristotle's theory of moral education, his theory of an inner attractiveness of virtue, and his conception of prudence and of its essential components. The paper will emphasize in particular two points: first, the topic of moral progress brings out neatly how for Aquinas practical knowledge, unlike theoretical knowledge, requires the support of affectivity. Second, for Aquinas moral progress is not a matter of sheer will-power, but rather of attentiveness to all the relevant factors and resources for making good decisions about things that matter for one's life.

First of all, I would like to offer my warm congratulations on the inscription of the Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor on the World Heritage List, which took place at the meeting of the World Heritage Committee in June 2014. This is a very significant first step towards achieving the inscription and ultimate protection of the 54 transnational corridors identified in the Silk Roads thematic study. It is also a useful time to develop, test and review cooperative management approaches to this initial section of the Silk Roads that might then be applied overall, as progress is made with further inscriptions in the future.

This paper presents reflexivity as a crucial property of human understanding, according to the medieval philosopher Thomas Aquinas. For Aquinas(adopting a line of thinking from the Aristotelian commentary tradition), because intellect and its object are one in the act of cognition, to cognize something is always to cognize oneself as the cognizing subject. Self-awareness is therefore built into every intentional act. Moreover, self-awareness always occurs in the context of cognizing some other: I perceive extramental objects as manifested to me, the subject, and I perceive myself as subject in every act of cognizing some object. As a result, Aquinas comes very close to contemporary theories of the duality of consciousness.
