Humeanism, Desire and Practical Commitment Xiangdong Xu(Department of Philosophy, Zhejiang University, China) It is usually said that Humeanism and Kantianism provide two entirely different or even incompatible approaches to, or interpretations of, practical reason or rational agency in human beings: while Humeanism is thought to elicit a kind of skepticism about practical reason, and thereby threaten to deprive the categorical status of moral principles or requirements, Kantianism is said to sustain the autonomy of practical reason and the categoricalness of morality. However, in this paper, I will argue that the alleged tension between Humeanism and Kantianism about practical reason will tend to dissolve, or at least it will no longer be so sharp as claimed by such Kantians as Christine Korsgaard, to the extent that the two constituents of Humeanism—its conception of reasons for action and its emphasis on the foundational status of the principle of instrumental reason—have been clarified insofar as their nature and status in human agency are concerned, and a relatively "naturalistic" interpretation can be given of the Kantian ethics. For the sake of argument, this paper is divided into three parts. In the first part, I will very briefly explicate the Humean conception of a reason for action, and clarify some leading misunderstandings of it against ‘pure cognitivism' about reasons for action proposed by Jonathan Dancy. In the second part, I will turn my attention largely to Korsgaard's critique of Hume or the Humean with regard to how to make sense of the instrumental principle. Korsgaard has argued that the instrumental principle cannot stand alone in the sense that unless something attaches normativity to our ends, there can no be no requirement to take the means to them. However, I will attempt to show that even if this claim is granted, there is no good reasonto hold that it will thereby undermine the foundational status of the principle in question in our rati

The most eminent philosopher of the Second Scholastic, Francisco Suárez, deploys a series of arguments intended to undermine what he calls 'The Old Theory of the Emotions', that is to say, then, the theory deriving from orthodox Thomism. His aim in doing so is not to replace the Old Theory with something new and improved. Instead, his endgame is something far more radical.
