Fall dormancy (FD) is one of the most important traits in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) crop grown in northern climates. Dry matter production data of varieties with different FD levels are needed for predicting the yield *** research was undertaken to identify and compare variability in dry matter (DM) yields of 42 alfalfa varieties with FD classes ranging from 2 to 9 in Zhengzhou,Henan Province,*** study was conducted for four years with five cuts per *** results showed that the dormant (class 2) and the semidormant varieties (class 4) produced the greatest DM yield,which were significantly greater than nondormant varieties of FD classes ***,DM yields among dormant and semidormant varieties of FD classes 2 to 6 were not different,so did among classes 3,5,6,7,8,*** negative correlation was between FD classes and DM yields,but their correlation was not significant,which correlation coefficient was -0.097,suggesting that the FD should not be used as main index in Zhengzhou introducing variety *** in DM yields among the varieties with identical FD class indicate the possibility in selecting varieties with both great yields and suitable FD *** this study,the best varieties were"Runner"(class 2),"Alfaking"(class 3),"WL-323ML"(class 4),"Goldenkey",and"CW680"(class 6),with average annual DM yields ranged from 22 to 24 t ha-1.(3)For all varieties,DM yield for the first cut was the highest,reduced gradually for the subsequent cuts,and was the lowest for the final cut each year,indicating larger influence of growing seasons than of the FD *** data suggest that in order to increase DM yield,best management practices should be focused on the spring and early summer.

In order to study the growth law of alfalfa,and choose suitable varieties with high yield and good quality for cultivation,4 alfalfa varieties,including Liangmu 400,Affinity,Baoding alfalfa and Seven leaves alfalfa were studied in Yellow River beach areas of Zhengzhou,Henan Province,China,in 2004,2005 and 2006 using a randomized block design with three *** plot was cut four times each year over the 3-year period to evaluate production performance of the tested *** results were obtained from the experiment.(1)As alfalfa growth year increased,the dry matter yields *** third year had the highest yield among the three years for the four *** dry matter yield of the four varieties in 2006 were higher than that of ones in 2005, and 2005 were higher than that of ones in 2004,and the third yield's dry matter yield nearly was the sum of the previous two years. The production performance of Liangmu400 was the best in the four varieties,providing a scientific base for choosing varieties in *** order to increase dry matter yield,we should select Liangmu400 in the industrialization production of alfalfa.(2) Cutting times had significant effect on dry matter herbage yield,the yield of first cutting was the highest,then the second,and the fourth,the third were the lowest,and dry matter yield of the first cutting were extremely significantly higher than that of the other three cuttings except for Seven leaf alfalfa (P<0.01).The dry matter yield was decreased to the lowest value in July among the four cuttings,in order to obtain higher alfalfa yield,we should focus on the management of the spring and autumn.(3)The changes of plant height were different from that of yield,three years average plant height of "Liangmu 400" was the tallest among the four varieties,significantly different from the other three varieties (P<0.05)."Baoding alfalfa"had the lowest height,and was very significantly different from Liangmu 400,Affinity and S
