More than 600 DBPs have been identified in drinking water after disinfections, however,only less than 100 DBPs have been evaluated the genotoxicity and carcinogenicity, mainly because of lacking rapid,reliable,high-through screening *** report a novel approach to evaluate and predict the mode of genotoxic action of DBPs using a recombinant bacterial-array sensors specific for DNA damage and *** this,thirty-seven recombinant E. coli strains with different promoters were selected,which control the expression of genes associated with the known DNA damage and repair pathways in ***,including,reversal of damage,nucleotide excision repair,base excision repair,mismatch repair,recombinational repair, and error-prone *** demonstae the ability and confirm the validity of the proposed genotoxicity assay,one DNA damage model chemical Mitomycin C and seven DBPs,including Formaldehyde,Trichloroacetic Acid,Bromoacetic acid,lodoacetic acid,Trislon,NaBrO,and NaClO,were *** assay measures real-time gene expression level changes induced by the chemicals and the differential response patterns and its strength of these strains to various DBPs allowed classifying the chemicals based on potential genotoxic *** results are also compared to gentoxicity data obtained from conventional in vivo and in vitro geneotoxicy assays reported in the literate,and showed good *** also applied this recombinant bacterial sensor array to reclaimed water after disinfection,and the results showed it's a sensitive,flexible and high-through tool for environmental genotoxicity assessment and predication.

The Hebei Sprit oil spill occurred in December 2007,approximately 10 km off the coast of *** aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) are common constituents of oil and alkylation of PAHs are generally occurring during 'weathering' process,contributing the toxicity of crude *** of PAHs are known as relatively strong agonists of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor(AhR).The aims of this study are to evaluate potential AhR mediated activities of the sediment samples collected from oil spill site and to determine the contribution of PAHs and alkylated PAHs to AhR mediated potency.A total of 14 sediment samples were collected from 3 different locations during 2007 to 2012 and extracted and analysed for 19 PAHs and 25 alkylated *** mediated activities of sediment samples were evaluated using H4IIE-luc cell bioassay. Fractionated extract of sediment samples and crude and weathered oil samples were evaluated in order to relate the observed sediment *** order to determine the contribution of AhR mediated activity of PAHs in sediment sample,relative potencies(ReP) of major 5 PAHs (naphthalene,fluorine,phenanthrene,dibenzothiophene,and chrysene) and their alkylated forms were determined using the H4IIE-luc cell *** from Shiduri coastal dune showed the highest AhR mediated *** fraction(F2) was generally the most active among the three fractions in all the sediment and oil ***(2.0×10-5) and 3-methyl-chrysene (1.4×10-4) showed high ReP,however,alkylation dependent tendency was not *** were developed for 10(alkylated) PAHs and were applied to calculate TEQs of sediment samples. The TEQs calculated for PAHs in sediment ranged between 0.01 and 0.33 ng TEQ/*** of PAHs accounted for up to 7.4%of the total AhR binding potency in the sediment *** factors that could explain the total dioxin-like activities such as polychlorinated naphthalenes should be investigated.

The anticipated anthropogenically-driven climate change not only can increase the average air and water temperatures and prolong the hottest period,but also result in increased incidents of temperature extremes that will have profound implications on the toxicity of chemical contaminants and hence their ecological risks to aquatic *** study comprehensively examined and elucidated the mechanisms of temperature-dependent chemical toxicities to aquatic ecototherms based on both literature review and empirical laboratory *** were drawn from an array of marine organisms including amphipod,copepod,diatom,and fish after exposure to a chemical(e.g.,chlorothalonil,copper,copper pyrithione,DDT or nano-zinc oxide (nZnO)).In general,we observed that most of the organisms showed the highest tolerance to chemicals at their optimal temperature(OT) where they displayed the highest value of median lethal or effect concentration,and the chemical toxicity increased at temperatures departure from the OT. For fishes and some invertebrates,such universal phenomena could be well explained by the thermal performance curve and the oxygen limited thermal tolerance *** contrast,small crustaceans could undergo metabolic depression and enter dormancy at low temperatures,and thus chemical toxicity generally declined with decreasing ***,the overall temperature-dependent toxicity profiles vary considerably amongst different *** differences may be partially attributable to the differences in temperature-mediated modifications of their physicochemical properties,toxicokinetics and *** instance,we observed that ion dissolution of nZnO in seawater significantly increases with decreasing water temperatures. Surface water is used as a drinking-water supply by about one-half of China population, including almost all people residing in rural *** river is drinking-water source and located in Zhejiang province in the east of *** residue of organochlorine pesticides(OCPs) in surface water from two sampling sites(Qingshan Lake and cross section of Yuhang) in Nantiaoxi river were measured by solid phase extraction-gas chromatography-electron capture detection(SPE-GC-ECD).The residues of OCPs as well as potential health risks were analyzed. The results showed that:(1) the residue concentrations of OCPs in surface water from Qingshan Lake and cross section of Yuhang were 224.4 ng/L and 60.3ng/L in 2008 and 18.8 ng/L and 14.5ng/L in 2009,*** residue distribution of OPCs showed that residue concentrations were higher in Qingshan Lake(upper reaches of Nantiaoxi river) in insufficient rainfall year than in cross section of Yuhang(down of Nantiaoxi river) in abundant rainfall year. (2) The residue levels ofγ-HCH、HCH、heptachlor、hexachlorobenzene are much lower than the maximum pesticides residue amounts allowed in drinking water in accordance with China national standards for pesticides residue in water,while the residue of heptachlor epoxide in Qingshan lake in 2008 is higher than the maximum pesticide residue amounts allowed in drinking water in accordance with China Sanitary Standard for Drink Water(2001) and China Standards for Surface Water Quality(GB GB3838-2002).(3) The non-carcinogenic risks of OCPs in different year were far less than 1,their carcinogenic risks were lower than 10"6,and total health risks were lower than 10-6,indicating that it would not cause significant carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic human health risks when using the Qingshan lake and cross section of Yuanhang water for drinking.

Environmental risk assessment methodologies for consumer use chemicals have been well-established in most of the developed nations and regions including United States,Canada, and European *** much less research and only very limited information on rigorous environmental assessments can be found for many 'emerging economy' countries,such as *** ultimate objective of this research is to develop an environmental risk assessment framework with primary focus on exposure methodology for China's specific conditions(for example,physical setting,infrastructure,and consumers' habits and practice).The first phase presented here is a case study on a preliminary assessment in two Chinese cities(Changzhou and Hefei) for two fragrance materials,specifically,the synthetic musks(HHCB:1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro -4,6,6,7,8,8-hexamethylcyclopenta-[gamma]-2-benzopyran,and AHTN:7-acetyl- 1,1,3,4,4,6-hexamethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene).Annual per capita usages of these materials were estimated from measured concentrations in Chinese wastewater,found in the *** parameters incorporated into this assessment were population,sewage water flow,municipal wastewater treatment infrastructure(treatment type,capacity,population served, and discharge flow),and surface water flow *** predicted concentrations on mixing zones downstream from wastewater treatment plants were in the ranges of 0.01-0.55μg/L for HHCB and 0.01-0.25μg/L for *** concentrations were significantly below the predicted no effect concentrations for pelagic freshwater organisms,i.e.,6.8μg/L for HHCB and 3.5μg/L for AHTN(European Union Risk Assessment Reports,2008).In addition,a summary of monitoring data in China(i.e.,effluents from wastewater treatment plants in 4 major geographic regions:Beijing,Shanghai,Guangdong,and Xi'an) revealed that measured concentrations for these chemicals in effluents were consistently less than the predicted values (i.e.,comparison on distributions and mean c

Although unionized ammonia has been found to be toxic to aquatic organisms for decades,most of the documented toxicity test results are primarily generated from temperate or cold water species in North America and *** data on unionized ammonia derived from tropical species are somewhat *** to a lack of tropical toxicity data,governments in tropical regions commonly used temperate toxicity data to derive water quality criteria(WQC) or directly adopted temperate WQC of unionized ammonia for protecting their aquatic *** leave an unknown margin of *** address this issue,we first conducted standard acute toxicity tests on unionized ammonia using seven tropical freshwater species(which are commonly found in Hong Kong's hill streams and freshwater wetlands). Toxicity endpoints included the median lethal or effect concentration(LC50 or EC50) values. Subsequently,we constructed a tropical species sensitivity distribution(SSD) using these newly generated toxicity data and relevant tropical toxicity data extracted from documented studies,and compared it with the corresponding temperate SSD that was constructed using secondary data. For each SSD,we estimated a 10 percentile hazardous concentration(HC10) using a regression model with the model best fit,and then computed a temperate-to-tropical HC10 *** results showed that the HC10 value of temperate SSD was 474.0μg/L,and this was much higher than that of the tropical one(36.5μg/L).The temperate-to-tropical HC10 ratio was estimated as 13,indicating that tropical species were much more sensitive than their temperate counterparts. We recommend that an extrapolation factor of 13 should be applied when surrogate temperate WQCs of unionized ammonia are used for tropical regions or when a priori knowledge on the sensitivity of local species in the tropical region is not available.

Four European and Chinese partners are involved in the GLOCOM project: University Ca' Foscari of Venice,Italy(UNIVE),with the role of coordinator;Umea University(UMEA),Sweden;the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences(CRAES),***;Beijing Normal University(BNU),***. Volatile organic compounds(VOCs) in both domestic and occupational settings are the main substances causing multiple chemical sensitivity reactions in human. Neurobehavioral toxicology is one of the most common toxic effects that VOCs *** order to investigate its direct effects on learning and memory capacity,different concentrations of formaldehyde,benzene,toluene and xylene were administered daily(2 h/d) to Kunming male mice for acute(10 days) and subchronic(13 weeks) *** studies demonstrated that mice in each group showed a decrease in escape latency during the hidden platform acquisition test in both acute and subchronic exposure *** the mean escape latency of the control had the fastest decrease,while that of higher VOCs concentration inhaled groups(2,3,4 groups in acute and subchronic exposure experiment) had the slower *** acute exposure experiment,mice in the control spent(45.8±2.8) s in the target quadrant during the probe test,which is significant higher than group 2(36.7±1.7) s,group 3 (27.1±1.1) s and group 4(25.9±2.8) s(P<0.05 or P<0.01).The same phenomenon was also found in subchronic exposure *** the control group,the time spent in the target quadrant was(43.0±5.8) s,while that in group 3 and group 4 were(29.8±5.4) s,(24.8±5.8) s. These results suggested that there were severe effects on learning and memory capacity of the mice in these higher level VOCs-inhaled *** findings finally indicated that inhaled VOCs negatively affected learning and memory capacity of mice in both acute and subchronic exposure experiment,escape latency and time spent in the target quadrant can be used as sensitive indicators to evaluate VOCs-induced learning and memory capacity dysfunction.

Remediation of active industrial areas has special requirements as infrastructure and other functions must be kept intact during the remediation *** order to meet these demands,new alternative strategies and remediation technologies adapted to areas with ongoing operations,should be *** project focuses on Domsj(o|¨) industrial area in Ornskoldsvik,Sweden,an area with over 100 years of pulp-and paper industry,chemical industry as well as other industrial activities. The aim of the project is to develop a general scientifically based methodology applicable to the management of contaminated industrial sites with ongoing activities. In the project,scientists,consultants and site operators merge their areas of expertise to develop alternative methods and techniques specifically designed for the contaminated soil in ongoing activities. The project is divided into four parts:Ⅰ) In depth studies of contaminant interactions with soil and fundamental processes regulating the mobility of metals and organic contaminants at the site were initiated(*** of leaching behavior in batch and column tests in relation to soil characteristics,pH,and the release of DOC).New analytical techniques were applied for characterization of the contaminants and for identification of potentially harmful substances.Ⅱ) Based on an inventory of hydrology and soil conditions,a hydro geological model was established for the whole area.Ⅲ) An inventory of appropriate remediation techniques and combination of techniques was performed.Ⅳ) Laboratory and field experiments were used.
