Taking the traffic priority of real-time or non-real-time services into consideration, this paper proposes two scheduling algorithms for multimedia services based on the definitions of frame and subchannel in ieee802.16e. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithms provide better performances of efficiency and fairness than conventional algorithm.

This paper seek to devise a new scalable and efficient solution to the problem of determining the throughput range using concurrent transmission in wireless mesh networks. After consideration of the conditions for the concurrent transmission scheduling, an easy and efficient algorithm in greedy mode is developed for scenario construction based on the analysis of the interference relationship. Simulation experiments show the improvement of the achievable throughput in wireless mesh networks and provide a helpful method for the decision of network size.

In this paper, we propose to enhance EDCA for ieee 802.11 WLANs with a simple and effective scheme called PEDCA, which introduces the transmission probability to the basic EDCA. By dynamically adjusting the transmission probability of each priority class according to the network load, our scheme can offer an enhanced guarantee of QoS to high priority class at high traffic load conditions. The simulation results show that PEDCA outperforms EDCA in terms of throughput and average delay while providing good service differentiation.

The ieee 802.16e standard proposes a broadband wireless access network, which is aimed to serve a mixture of traffic types. As the standard leaves the data scheduling part open, we suggest a deficit-based scheduling scheme with an adaptive quantum for the network operating in TDD mode. Our scheme supports traffic in both downlink and uplink directions, with the guaranteed service amount defined by a minimum tolerable traffic rate, a standard QoS parameter. When traffic exceeds network resources, our scheme employs a fairness constraint to allocate bandwidth fairly. Simulation results prove that our scheme can improve fairness performance and provide equally low delay to traffic with diverse characteristics.

Many mobile ad hoc network protocols use simple flooding, in order to adapt to changes in time varying network topology. Most of the times, a network-wide flood results in redundant packets and increases network congestion, probability of packet collision, low utilization of available bandwidth, and most important, higher power consumption. In this paper, we propose a new cross-layer broadcast scheme to minimize broadcast traffic in mobile ad hoc networks. Our scheme is based on use of received signal strength indicator, RSSI, value to reduce the number of broadcast packets. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is verified using simulations.

The increasing demand of multimedia applications in wireless local area networks (WLAN) has led to the attempt to provide quality of service for differentiated traffics in WLAN. In this paper, a novel mechanism, Adaptive IFS through Transmission Delay (AITD) is introduced;to dynamically adjust the inter-frame space (IFS) based on differentiation between required transmission delay and estimated experienced transmission delay. Depending on the network conditions and source requirements, increase in experienced transmission delay toward expected transmission delay leads to dynamic reduction in IFS length and increase in transmission probability. Simulation results show that the proposed mechanism can significantly improve the scheduling performance in comparison with enhanced distributed coordination function introduced in ieee802.11e.

This paper proposes a cross-layer design-based, multipath routing protocol (CMRP) for mobile ad hoc networks. In combination of the upcoming ieee802.11e standard in MAC sublayer, we determine that CMRP benefits from this new technology significantly. Performance evaluation of AODV in legacy 802.11 and CMRP in ieee802.11e shows that, as a function of speed of node mobility, a tremendous reduction achieved, in metrics such as the average end-to-end delay, routing overheads, route discovery frequency and normalized routing load with CMRP - almost more than 80％, 40％, 40％, and 40％. In the case of varying number of sessions, the reduction for route discovery frequency, normalized routing load and average hopcounts of active routes are up to 70％, 80％, and 50％.

To support applications with quality of service (QoS) requirements, such as video, audio, voice over IP and other multimedia applications in wireless networks, the ieee 802.11e protocol is designed to provide differentiated priority QoS in wireless networks. In order to integrate with wide area networks effective, policy based QoS management architecture in 802.11e networks, which could realize uniform QoS in whole network, worth researches. This paper presents an efficient policy based QoS management scheme, called Policy-based WLAN QoS Management, and related proportional delay differentiated algorithm, referred as Arbitrary Channel Reservation, for 802.11e networks. In the new scheme, a hybrid type of architecture, combining the outsourcing and provisioning models, is used, most closely meets the requirements of 802.11e networks.

In this paper, we investigate the cross-layer design of packet scheduling and adaptive resource allocation in multiuser MIMO-OFDM systems based on STBC. First we group different types of service into four types according to 802.16 protocol[11]. Then we use a two-layer scheduling architecture to shape traffic at medium access (MAC) layer: the first layer schedules packets for different users of the same service type and the second layer schedules packets of different service types. At last, we propose a resource allocation algorithm that allocates wireless resource efficiently at physic (PHY) layer according to the scheduling results of the MAC layer. Compared with [8], simulation results show that our proposed algorithm can achieve significant improvement in packet drop rate, packet delay, and system throughput.

The multi-rate capability provided by the ieee 802.11 physical layer requires that the MAC layer adapts the transmission rate according to the receiver-side channel conditions. Many link adaptation schemes for a multi-hop wireless ad hoc network have been proposed so far where most of them probe the receiver's channel condition using RTS/CTS handshake and select the highest attainable data rate at which the receiver can decode successfully. A key problem with such schemes is that they do not consider the interference from hidden nodes in multi-hop and multi-rate environments, and hence, they may not work properly since the higher rate also increases the probability of interference. In this paper, we investigate the relation between interference and transmission rates and show that a transmitter can achieve higher performance by transmitting at the decreased rate in multi-hop ad hoc networks. Based on the observation, we present a new effective link adaptation scheme that integrates the receiver-based and senderbased techniques and determines the best transmission strategy taking the interference as well as the receiver's channel quality into consideration.
