The amygdala is essential for fear processing. Recent studies indicate that the central amygdala, a structure that is composed of distinct populations of inhibitory neurons, has an important role in both fear learning and fear expression. In particular, fear conditioning induces cell-type specific synaptic plasticity in the lateral subdivision of the central amygdala(Ce L) that is required for the formation of fear memory. Here I will report our recent findings regarding the circuit and cellular mechanisms underlying Ce L function, including the modulation of Ce L synaptic plasticity and intra-Ce L inhibition by inputs from the paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus.

Molecular, cellular, and circuitry mechanisms underlying memory formation have been major focus of neuroscience research for a long period. Yet forgetting has been neglected for it has been viewed as a negative, disruptive, and passive phenomenon. We report here that forgetting is active in nature as to that memory is erased through learning or interference activated signaling pathways. Each memory component has its own specific forgetting mechanism. Activation of forgetting mechanisms are critic for cognitive flexibility and impairments in activation of forgetting is a common feature for mutations of autism susceptibility genes.

The entorhino-hippocampal neural circuits of the mammalian brains are able to internally generate efficient spatial representations of large-scale environments. Hippocampal principal cells in mammalian brains form sparse codes of the positions in large environments. The underlying computational mechanisms of the formation of spatial memory in large-scale environments are still not well understood. We present a competitive learning network that integrates both spatial inputs from grid cells as well as contextual inputs from non-spatial cells. Through self-organization, place units in the network form place fields at "randomly" interleaved locations, in the sense that both the recruitment process and the inter-field interval are memoryless, a property superior for spatial memory formation in large environments.

Unlike alphabetic languages, Chinese characters are in a square manner and ideographic. Here, we show that the brain of native Chinese speakers ultrarapidly access to semantic category of Chinese characters, revealed by the automatic cortical response to violations of the categories. This rapid dynamic brain activity, from ~ 120 to 400 ms, demonstrated distributed neural networks for distinct semantic categories, and portrayed the instantaneous course for the extraction of meaning from ideographic Chinese characters.

Oxytocin is implicated to regulate several important behaviors, such as social interaction and feeding behavior;nevertheless, the neural circuitry regulating oxytocin neurons still remains uncharacterized. Here we generated a comprehensive whole-brain atlas describing the monosynaptic inputs onto hypothalamic oxytocin neurons based on a genetically restricted transsynaptic retrograde approach. We identified distinct inputs onto oxytocin neurons from forebrain and hindbrain neurons, with specific inputs from septum, hypothalamus, olfactory cortex and ventral hippocampus. Cell-type-specific classification of connectivity patterns will allow us for further functional analysis of the diverse neural circuitries modulating neuroendocrine activities.
