St. John Hospital (SJH) is a rural hospital in an outlying island of Hong Kong SAR. In the past, the management of patients had been taken care of by doctors without specialist training. Patients were brought to urban hospitals by helicopters or police launches, i.e. CASEVAC, after a brief assessment in SJH. Since 2001, doctors with emergency medicine background began to serve in SJH. In 2004, the first emergency physician was employed to conduct regular clinical audits, mortality & morbidity meetings and trainings to the clinical staff. This study examines whether the involvement of doctors with emergency medicine background has resulted in different CASEVAC activation patterns and patient outcomes.
