Myostatin (GDF-8) acts as a negative regulator of muscle growth. Mutations of the gene are responsible for the double muscling phenotype in several European cattle breeds. In order to further study functions of the bovine myostatin gene, the polymorphisms at promoter region of bovine myostatin gene were detected in Nanyang breed and yak by PCR-RFLPs. The frequencies of the SNP at -371 (T/A) ( relative to ATG translation start codon) were assessed. The allele T dominated in Nanyang breed and yak. No allele A was detected in yak and no homozygous individual with genotype AA was found in Nanyang breed.
