This paper addresses the problems associated with recent trends toward ethnographic particularism in the study of shamanistic *** example of the Phombos of eastern Nepal is used to point out that particularistic studies focusing on what is distinct and unique in each case detract from the broader anthropological goal of understanding of what is in fact a recurring cross-cultural *** paper offers an analysis of certain theoretical issues relating to the comparative study of shamanism and provides a conceptual model for cross-cultural analysis of shamanism.

The main purpose of this paper is to introduce the god Oshira, which is an object of worship of a traditional folk religion in Japan. First,the figures related to the god will be explained;next the mythology of Oshira will be examined;finally the faith healing methods using these god-figures by Itako,who is a Japanese blind female shaman,will be presented. Itako,using the figures,practice shamanic services such as announcing oracles,healings,and other shamanic ***, it is not used for the most important shamanic work of Kuchiyose,the calling of spirits of the *** also worship the Oshira,whether for simple worship or for *** is not a part of the intrinsic shamanistic ***, their customs will support the understanding of shamanism and their images of Oshira. For the epic,there is an old legend in China that seems to be the origin of the Japanese god *** stories are compared and clarified as to the reason why Oshira became a religious object of worship in Japan.

This paper uses examples from Korean rites and Chinese rites of the Manchu,Qiang,Yi,Naxi,and Oroqen to show how the study of the dramaturgy of shamanist rites can highlight the variety of forms the rites take and elucidate their make- up,dynamics, meaning,and transformational and therapeutic effect on participants. Many rites are dramatic in that they involve the mimetic representation of gods,deceased ancestors,or ordinary human *** consist mainly of spectacle;some involve participative *** focus on dramatic dialogue,some on theatrical symbols. Some are dramatic with no mimetic representation whatsoever. One can investigate not only the intrinsic dramatic makeup of a rite,but also its relation to the performing shaman;and one needs to consider especially the relation of the rite to the community of *** can also study a rite's relevance in the light of critical theory.A study of a shamanist rite as drama presumes that whatever psychic powers a shaman has are complemented by artistic skills and that whatever private visions he or she has attain significance for the community in the public staging of its belief system.

Facing critical turning point,religions have been increasingly required to do more for the peace actualization domestically and *** shamanism needs to be studied and examined academically in light of a possible role of peace-maker for the divided nation like Korea and the world. Shamanism as indigenous religion which is originated from the beginning of the nation influences Korean people continuously and operates as basic religiosity even *** reality of shamanism helps the people recognize and come forward to the great task of peace actualization what a society has urgently sought so *** the situation,I will try to find shamanism's important role for peace realization and its meaning in a society where various religious traditions coexist in harmony, especially in relation to inter-religious dialogue and cooperation. Relating the shamanism as an"archaic"religion that is ex- pected to preserve traditional cultures and succeed to the spirit of harmony among religions to the role of peace actualization,we can find a clue of hope for the peace by practicing such inter-religious dialogue and *** the rediscovery of such kind of hope,we expect that the way of peace education that helps us see our culture as it is and develop it at the same time can be proposed.

This paper aims to explore the process of corporeal cosmogenesis or metamorphosis of the human body into a Cosmic Body in the Yanomami shamanistic *** the initiatory ordeal, the neophyte undergoes an intense experience of death through dismemberment by the spirits,and subsequent rebirth, thus overcoming the human condition and becoming an individual living *** at the same time,he becomes a"collection"of other spirits who leave their natural habitats-located on the mountain tops and in the forest-and move into the initiate's body which becomes their *** the candidate surrenders his soul and humanness to the spirits,the latter become his personal allies and sources of power while at the same time imbuing the shaman's post mortem ego with certain properties that can best be described in holographic terms. Transformation of the human condition during initiation, through the fusion of body and cosmos,is manifested on two levels. On the micro-cosmic body-level,the shaman's body becomes a micro-replica of the Yanomami universe,consisting of distinc- tive body-structural components,embodied by the master shaman,such as the path of spirits,communal spirit-house,and Cosmic Mountain among *** the same time,the candidate's ego-consciousness undergoes radical transformation of self-perception and mode of being as it expands beyond its usual body-self boundaries into a cosmic,all-embracing open mode,becoming unified with the external dimensionality of the macrocosm. The body,in this sense,becomes a medium for manifestation of a larger structure of the Yanomami *** is through mediation of the shaman's body that the physical features of the Yanomami lifeworld intersect with the invisible world of spirits.
