Influence of underbody suspended equipment on rail ride comfort 12

this paper illustrates a methodology that, by means of laboratory and on-track tests, allows for an appropriate design of the connection elements between the suspended equipment and the carbody in order to enhance the rail ride comfort. In particular at first the connection elements are tested in laboratory to assess their visco-elastic behaviour simulating the common operating conditions. Subsequently on-track tests and experimental modal analysis are carried out to identify the interaction between underframe equipment motions and carbody modes. In the experimental tests, starting from the laboratory test results, it is possible to define the connection elements in order to minimise the negative influence on vehicle ride comfort. Two different solutions are proposed: the "TMD solution" (the suspension is tuned on the natural frequency of the carbody mode most relevant from the comfort point of view) and the "suspended solution" (the suspension system aims to decouple the two subsystems). this work addresses the problem of the reliability of simulations for realistic nonlinear systems, by using efficient techniques for the analysis of the propagation of the uncertainties of the model parameters through the dynamics of the system. We present the sensitivity analysis of the critical speed of a railway vehicle with respect to its suspension design. the variance that stems from parameter tolerances of the suspension is taken into account and its propagation through the dynamics of a full car with a couple of two-axle Cooperrider bogies running on curved track is studied. Modern Uncertainty Quantification methods, such as Stochastic Collocation and Latin Hypercube, are employed in order to assess the global uncertainty in the computation of the critical speed. the sensitivity analysis of the critical speed to each parameter and combination of parameters is then carried out in order to quantify the importance of different suspension components. this is achieved using combined approaches of sampling methods, ANOVA expansions, Total Sensitivity Indices and Lowdimensional Cubature Rules. the work addresses the optimization of the steering and roll systems of an innovative four-wheeled tilting vehicle, which is currently being built at the University of Padova. the vehicle is a combination of traditional two and four-wheeled forms, with the driver operating a bike handlebar to steer, and throttle and brake inputs to control speed. Two pedals control the roll movement, while the gearshifts are made automatically. the steering system consists of a handlebar, column, pinion, rack and track-rods to the wheels. In the resulting spatial mechanism, roll and steer motions of the wheels are coupled. the kinematic optimization presented in this paper, aims at minimizing undesired roll to steer behaviour, and provides appropriate outer/inner wheel steer angles. the natural coordinate approach is employed to efficiently simulate and optimize the mechanism. Every turbine for every hydroelectric power plant is unique;therefore its model has to be designed using state of the art design techniques and tested before the actual prototype which is costly, is manufactured. In this study, the details of the design and construction of a hydroturbine test facility at TOBB University of Economics and Technology are explained. the facility will be used to test hydroturbine models up 2MWs of power simulating turbine prototypes. the performance and cavitation tests of the turbines will be performed utilizing this facility according to International Electrical Commission (IEC) standards. the test facility is 19 meters long with a base area of around 600 meter squares. the hydraulic analysis of the designed set-up is performed using a system where valves, pipes, structures, water records and connections form an intelligent system, same with the experimental facility. According to the results, system performance is checked, alternative designs are evaluated and operating strategies are defined by minimizing the losses. Copyright © 2014 by asme.

In the present paper, simulation for shell and tube heat exchanger investigated using CFD techniques. Numerical simulations of the turbulent, three-dimensional fluid flow and heat transfer are performed using Ansys Fluent 6.3. the effect of friction characteristics on the model of heat exchanger is discussed. A RNG κ-Ε turbulence model with non-equilibrium wall function and 2nd order upwind is used. the present model is validated with the experimental literature and show a good agreement. the numerical results of the present study predict reasonably agree well with available correlations. Finally the present study model can be used to model a shell and tube heat exchanger with a satisfactory accuracy level in predictions. Copyright © 2014 by asme.

the purpose of this study is to design brushless permanent magnet DC motors for electric vehicles based on a polechanging method. By generating a pulse when changing the number of poles, magnetization of magnets can be changed appropriately and the principle of pole-changing motors can be applied to permanent magnet machines. this kind of machine not only retains the feature of permanent magnet machines in efficiency, but also acquires wide speed range. In this study, a pole-changing method using common windings is proposed and performance of brushless permanent magnet DC pole-changing motors is investigated. According to T-N curves, the proposed brushless permanent magnet pole-changing motor yields larger starting torque and wider speed range than motors with a fixed number of poles. the process of conceptualizing innovative designs is multifaceted and inherently difficult to perform successfully. It is largely characterized by the designer's capability to find solutions to design problems beyond existing norms. General agreement suggests this process should entail a holistic approach for conceiving new ideas, which are expanded, assessed, developed, refined, and implemented as part of an iterative problem solving cycle. Suitable design procedures and skills are therefore vital as most of the final cost of a product or system is committed within the early conceptualization stage. this paper builds on engineering design techniques previously developed by the author, namely the design Process Framework in conjunction with the Concept Assessment Taxonomy (CAT) at the heart of concept development [1]. the main emphasis of the work presented herein is the application of said framework to a new design challenge in order to further test and demonstrate its practicality in a real world context: the conceptual development of an innovative, modular, hybridelectric powertrain for two-wheelers. In this contribution a web-based assessment framework for CAD data is proposed which has been developed based on the experience the authors made giving undergraduate courses at a German university. the framework is the backbone of a hybrid teaching concept combining conventional classroom lessons with e-learning elements. In-between the classroom lessons the students receive instructions on a particular modeling task via a web-interface. the same interface is used to hand in solutions in form of CAD files. Teachers who need to assess these solutions are supported by a semi-automated analysis of the CAD geometry. An algorithm compares each solution with a reference solution in order to reveal typical modeling mistakes. After the assessment is completed the students receive a feedback on their work. A case study on the application of the teaching concept in a course with 691 participants held during summer term 2013 reveals the positive experience the authors made using the system and points to some issues that need to be improved in the future. the paper deals with a project aimed to improve the reliability of a condition monitoring system applied on gearboxes installed on rolling mills. In this context, to properly set up the algorithm, it is necessary to have measurements associated both to standard operating conditions and to malfunctioning. the latter, not being able to be experimentally generated, can be simulated by developing numerical models of the machine under varying conditions. the outputs generated, corresponding to different fault conditions associated with the main common failures of the elements that constitute the transmission, will provide a useful data base to tune the algorithm of condition monitoring. In redundant manipulation systems the end-effector path does not completely determine the trajectories of all the individual degrees of freedom and this freedom can be used to enhance the performance in some sense. the paper deals with utilizing the redundancy to minimize energy consumption. It extends previous results by considering more general cases of possible coupling between the axes, e.g. three axes for planar motion, and more general paths comprising of several primitive motions connected dynamically. the solution is based on projections into lower subspaces that separate the system and the input into two parts. One that is completely determined by the end-effector path and the other that is free for optimization. Simulation results show that redundancy, even with limited joint motion, can lead to a considerable reduction in energy consumption. Copyright © 2014 by asme.
