Based on examples from research and innovation within nanotechnology, housing, bioenergy, and clothing the complexity of environmental innovation is discussed. A model for a more holistic approach to environmental innovation, which can be used both as part of innovation processes and for analyses of previous innovation processes, is developed. the approach is based on: 1) A scenario perspective on environmental aspects and impacts which implies a focus on the future roles of a product, its users and the surrounding society as imagined by the designers in their considerations about the problems addressed by the product and the solution it is offering. 2) A system's perspective which implies a focus on the system, which a product is part of, including the need for supporting infrastructures like stakeholder training, waste management etc. 3) A lifecycle perspective to environmental aspects and impacts in order not only to capture environmental aspects from cradle to grave, e.g. related to material extraction and refining, chemical exposure during manufacturing, use and waste handling. 4) A governance perspective on management of environmental aspects and impacts, both in relation to the legitimacy of the environmental problems addressed and the solutions 'offered' by the product. Unsteady flow simulation in suction muffler of a hermetic reciprocating compressor 12

In this study a numerical study of a suction muffler in a hermetic reciprocating compressor of a domestic refrigerator is performed using a finite volume based flow solver (Fluent). In order to reveal the behavior of the flow realistically, unsteady experimental pressure data has been used in the outlet boundary condition for the simulations. Detailed investigations are carried out to reveal the instantaneous flow behavior in different muffler sections such as channel and chambers based on the mass flow rate variation with respect to crankshaft angle. Power spectrum of pressure fluctuations at selected points help to reveal the noise characteristics of the muffler. this study gives a comprehensive insight into the interaction of muffler chambers with flow through the channel. In a previous study, the ratio of the chamber volumes were shown to be an important design parameter. To verify this assumption, three prototype muffler geometries were simulated. In these prototypes, the plate that divides the muffler into two chambers was moved by 7 mm and 10 mm in the direction to enlarge the second chamber. the flow through the prototype geometries were investigated numerically. the results showed that the aerodynamic performance increased while the aero-acoustic performance slightly decreased. Furthermore, this study aims to be an initial step to a more complicated optimization process which involves the inlet valve dynamics. Copyright © 2014 by asme.

Performance parameters such as critical speed and stability are affected by various design parameters such as supply pressure, clearance between shaft and rotor (air film thickness), bearing diameter and length etc. for externally pressurized gas lubricated bearing. Literature about effects of supply pressure is generally analyzed with clearances which are lower than 100μm. Externally pressurized gas lubricated bearings with small clearance have some practical disadvantages such as difficulties in manufacturing process and price. So, externally pressurized air bearing may become widespread with usage of higher values of clearance in the bearing. However, there is limited number of study investigating the dynamics of externally pressurized air bearing with high values of clearance. In this study the effect of supply pressure was investigated on the dynamic of an externally pressurized gas lubricated bearing with increased clearance. the flow between shaft and rotor was modeled using Reynold's Equation which is known fluid equation of motion. And this model was solved by Alternating Direction Implicit (ADI) numerical solution method. Dynamics of the rotor was investigated for different elevated (increased) clearances. Detection of cracks in stationary rotors via the modal frequency changes induced by a roving disc 12

In this study, a crack identification approach based on a finite element cracked model is presented to identify the location and depth ratios of a crack in rotor systems. A Bernoulli-Euler rotor carrying an auxiliary roving disc has been used to model the cracked rotor, in which the effect of a transverse open crack is modelled as a time-varying stiffness matrix. In order to predict the crack location in the rotor-disc-bearing system, the suggested approach utilises the variation of the normalized natural frequency curves versus the non-dimensional location of a roving disc which traverses along the rotor span. the merit of the suggested approach is to identify the location and sizes of a crack in a rotor by determining only the natural frequencies of the stationary rotor system. the first four natural frequencies are employed for the identification and localisation of a crack in the stationary rotor. Furthermore, this approach is not only efficient and practicable for high crack depth ratios but also for small crack depth ratios and for a crack close to or at the node of mode shapes, where natural frequencies are unaffected. this study presents a numerical simulation of precursors and characteristics of rotating stall in a centrifugal compressor with vaned diffuser. the aim is to further understand the causes of stall inception, characteristics of stall process and to investigate reliable simulation of stall control methods and aid in their optimization. Initial numerical results show that the tip leakage flow and early separation in the impeller blades are causing weakness of radial velocity and deviation of fluid angle at impeller exit. Also, results show that the vaneless region between impeller and diffuser near shroud surface is the key factor of developing radial velocity deficiency into stall cells leading to pressure fluctuations on impeller blades. the present study confirms that injection of air at the shroud surface of the vaneless region has an effect on modifying fluid angle entering diffuser and on delaying of stall inception to occur at lower mass flow rates. this work presents a closed form investigation on the effect of temperature gradient on the buckling resistance of functionally graded material (FGM) shallow arches. the constituents are assumed to vary smoothly through the thickness of the arch according to the power law distribution and they are assumed to be temperature dependent. the arches subjected to the both uniform distributed radial load and central concentrated load and both boundary supports are supposed to be pinned. the temperature field is approximated by one-dimensional linear gradient through the thickness of the arch and the displacement field approximated by classical arches model. Also, Donnell type kinematics is utilized to extract the suitable strain-displacement relations for shallow arches. Adjacent equilibrium criterion is used to buckling analysis, and, critical bifurcation load is obtain in the complete presence of pre-buckling deformations. Results discloses the usefulness of using the FGM shallow arches in thermal environment because the temperature gradient enhances the buckling resistance of these structures when they are subjected to a lateral mechanical load. this paper proposes a new kind of system for effective indirect solar cooking by utilizing a novel Fresnel lens. A semicylindrical vessel (solar boiler) for producing steam and a jacketed cooker was designed, fabricated and tested experimentally for cooking applications. the solar boiler produced high temperature steam of 146°C and pressure of 3.15 barg which was used for cooking purposes. the international standard for evaluating cooker performance was implemented on this system and heating power was determined to be 51.2 Watt at a temperature difference of 50°C. the maximum energy and exergy efficiencies for boiler were found to be 30.18 % and 2.86%, respectively. this represents a 92% increment in energy efficiency and 128.8% increment in exergy efficiency as compared to solar parabolic cookers. the maximum energy efficiency of 5.02% and maximum exergy efficiency of 0.378% were achieved in this cooking system. Most of the mechanical systems are composed of different subsystems coupled by several links. Any excitation acting on the system is divided into several internal forces which propagate through these links or so called transfer paths. this paper presents the use of experimental transfer path analysis in identifying the transmission paths for a heavy duty truck in order to estimate the vibration and noise transmitted from the cabin and engine mounts. the most challenging part of the TPA analysis is estimation of the internal operational forces so that the total response can be predicted accurately. At the circumstances where direct measurement of the operational forces is impossible, especially for complex structures, a common approach to address the problem is based on a measured frequency response function (FRF) matrix and a set of operational responses. the main problem of this approach is the inversion of the FRF matrices which can be ill-conditioned. Once the internal operational forces are estimated, the vibration or noise response for the selected location in the truck can be calculated. To validate the predicted results, coherence of the collected data and the condition numbers of FRF matrices are investigated so that the accuracy of the predicted results can be quantified for the frequency band of interest. the predictions of the total response are compared with the experimentally measured data such that the coherence and condition number related observations are validated. the aim of this numerical study is to investigate the lubrication system of a household hermetic reciprocating compressor. the effects of the rotational speed, oil viscosity and crankshaft-to-oil sump bottom distance on the oil-air two phase flows are investigated in detail. Necessary oil to lubricate the components of the compressor is sucked from the oil sump through an asymmetrically opened suction hole of the crankshaft by its rotational movement and climbs as an oil film on the helical channel carved on the shaft wall. this oil film is directed to crankshaft outlet. the oil forms an immiscible mixtu re with air, thus a two phase flow model should be analyzed using Volume of Fluid (VoF) method in the flow solver. Main findings related to the oil mass flow rate released from the crankshaft outlet reveal that with increasing rotational speed, the mass flow rate from the crankshaft outlet also increases, but with increasing viscosity and decreasing crankshaft-to-oil sump bottom distance, the oil mass flow rate decreases. In this paper, a methodology for real time identification of various singularities for various workspace types of parallel robots is proposed. Python 3D simulation software has been developed to position the moving platform of the robot's CAD model through pre-defined rules in order to solve specific problems including singularity identification, obstacle avoidance, and path planning. the system is designed to identify the moving platform's best possible pose. Boolean logic is used to identify valid path trajectory through parametric sweep search method. Joint constraints are checked to validate the platforms' positions using the actuators' stroke length, their angles, and any possible collisions. Solutions for any desired pose, based on line collision and mesh model algorithms, are then found. the path, position and workspace data are verified against a kinematic model of the robot, developed in Solid works and Matlab software tools. the simulation system has been successfully tested using various n-dimensional interpolations based on the given case study.
