the aim of this study is to optimize the Computer Controlled Polishing (CCP) of flat surfaces based on discretization of tool path. First, a new method has been developed to simulate the polishing Process. this method capable of expanding any tool path such as spiral, raster or even random over the surface , meaning that it has the capacity of simulating polishing process under different tool path strategies. Second, a numerical optimization method is applied to optimize the dwell time distribution over the defined tool path. the new method developed in this study was conducted to operate polishing process of a flat lens with 128 mm in diameter and initial surface roughness of 3.975 mm for PV and 987 nm for rms using a 3-axis CNC machine. After two passes of polishing, the final surface roughness reduced to 784 nm for PV and 190 nm for rms which shows around 80 percent reduction in surface roughness for PV and rms. the mechanical properties and wear behavior of Dual Phase (DP) steels have been investigated and compared with those observed in normalized (N) steel that has the same chemical composition. the DP steels having different content and morphology of martensite were produced by varying intercritical annealing temperature and initial microstructures. Mechanical properties of four different DP steels and N steel have been investigated by carrying out tensile and macrohardness tests. Dry sliding wear tests have been conducted on four different the DP steels and the N steel using pin-on-plate to investigate their wear characteristics. It has been found that the yield and tensile strengths and macrohardness increase with increasing martensite content and decreasing martensite size. the yield and tensile strengths and macrohardness of the N steel were significantly lower than the DP steels whereas percentage of total elongation was higher. Wear properties are improved by increasing martensite volume fraction and size in the DP steels. the N steel specimen showed the highest wear rate. Copyright © 2014 by asme.

A complex system is composed of many interacting components, but the behavior of the system as a whole can be quite different from that of the individual components. An automobile is an example of a common mechanical system composed of a large number of individual components that are mechanically connected in some way and hence transmit vibrations to each other. this paper proposes a variety of interrelated analytical tools for the study of experimental data from such systems. In this work, experimental results of accelerometer data acquired at two locations in the automobile for two different kinds of tests are analyzed. One test is the response to impact on a stationary vehicle, and the other is the road-response to the vehicle being driven on a flat road at different speeds. Signals were processed via Fourier and wavelet transforms, cross-correlation coefficients were computed, and Hilbert transforms and Kuramoto order parameters were determined. A new parameter representing synchronization deficit is introduced. there is indeed some degree of synchronization that can be quantified between the accelerations measured at these two locations in the vehicle. the usage of modern thrusters allows to combine the functions of the drive and the ship rudder in one assembly, which are separated in conventional ship propulsions. the horizontally oriented propeller is supported in a vertically rotatable nacelle, which is mounted underneath the ship hull. the propeller can directly or indirectly driven by an electric motor or combustion engine. the direct drive requires the installation of a low speed electric motor in the nacelle. the present paper concentrates on indirect drives where the driving torque is transferred by bevel gear stages and shafts from the ship to the propeller. Due to the closed and inaccessible construction high demands on the reliability have to be achieved. Especially for the design of the highly loaded bevel gear stages accurate information to the occurring loads are required. the available experience to the operation of thrusters show, that primarily rarely occurring special load cases must be considered in the design process. Such operational conditions can only be determined by expensive long-term measurements. By means of a detailed multibody system simulation model of the thruster it is already possible to develop a basic knowledge to the dynamic properties of the drive train and to determine design loads for drivetrain components. Present work is aimed at studying into detail mixture formation and combustion in a gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine working under stoichiometric mixture conditions. the study is performed both numerically and experimentally. From the experimental side, the engine, optically accessible, is characterized by collecting, for various injection strategies, incylinder pressure cycles and digital images. From the numerical side, a 3D engine model is developed, that includes proper submodels for the spray dynamics and the spray-wall interaction. this last phenomenon is studied into detail by resorting to a preliminary 3D simulation of the spray impingement realized in a proper experiment, where the engine injector is mounted at a certain distance from a cold or hot wall. An interesting comparison between numerical and experimental images of the in-cylinder spray dynamics is presented, that also allows individuating the difference in the wallfilm deposition under various injection strategies. this opens the way to understand the difference in the combustion development arising as injection is anticipated or retarded in the engine working cycle. Influence of installation tension on transmission error due to resonance in a synchronous belt 12

In synchronous belt drives, transmission error is generated due to resonance of the belt spanning the driving and driven pulleys when the transverse natural frequency of the belt approaches the meshing frequency of the belt and the pulley teeth. the behavior of the transmission error caused by resonance has been assumed to be dependent on the installation tension. In the present study, the influence of installation tension on the transmission error in a synchronous belt drive was experimentally investigated for a case in which first mode vibration due to resonance was induced in both the upper and lower spans. In addition, an analysis of the transmission error based on the experimental results was carried out. A transmission error contains two components: one with a period equal to the pitch of the pulley, and the other with a period of half the pulley pitch. Good agreement was found between the calculation and experimental results, thus confirming the validity of the analysis method. For a fixed pulley speed, the transmission error was largest when the installation tension was applied at a position where the displacement of the upper span was equal to that of the lower span. When the installation tension was varied and the pulley speed was adjusted so that the belt experienced resonance, the transmission error decreased with an increase in installation tension. design knowledge is distributed unevenly across organizational boundaries within large enterprises. Within this context, there are two main barriers to quick and reliable knowledge flow. the first is the organizational boundaries which will influence the efficiency of new design knowledge flow from when and where it is located to when and where it is need for application. the second is that one organization or sub-company of the same large enterprise often knows little about what kind of design knowledge or capability another one has. these barriers will prevent the flow of knowledge. therefore, there is a need to develop methods and tools to improve the performance of knowledge flow within large enterprises. this paper first presents a brief introduction to the context and background information of our knowledge flow management practice in a large enterprise. then the definition of key elements of design knowledge flow are introduced and analyzed. After that, we propose a service-based framework for the management of design knowledge flow;this framework focuses on organizing knowledge providers and developing a knowledge service platform. the proposed approach was primarily validated and verified in a large construction machinery enterprise. In addition, future work on improving the approach to knowledge flow management is also briefly discussed. Copyright © 2014 by asme.

this paper introduces an efficient and powerful approach to fault detection in rotating machinery using time-frequency analysis based on the wavelet transform of the monitored shaft vibration signal. Wavelet techniques are one of the latest powerful tools in analyzing the transient information for condition monitoring and fault detection using vibration signature. the proposed technique combines both the Continuous Wavelet and the Wavelet Packet Transforms. In particular, it exploits the use of the modulus of the local maxima lines in the wavelet domain, to detect impulsive mechanical faults through shaft vibration such as impact bladeto- stator rubbing in turbo machinery. the proposed new wavelet-based signal processing method was able to detect the singularity in the measured shaft vibration, which was generated by blade rubbing. the singularity detection achieved by the new method was very well supported by its counterpart based on the direct blade vibration measurements. Our proposed technique was favorably compared with both the time wave and the traditional Fourier Transform techniques. In fact, both the analysis and the extensive simulation work show the superiority of the combined approach (Wavelet Packet Transform and Maxima Lines) over the traditional Fourier-based method, in reliably diagnosing impulsive mechanical faults. the paper presents the motion simulation of a Wing in Ground craft with a Lippisch configuration which is stable in terms of static stability. the influence of wind and wave perturbations on the dynamic stability of the flight are investigated. the analysis of safety and stability used two different approaches. Based on frequency domain simulation, the first approach derived from the classical stability theory utilizes the aerodynamic coefficients and their linearized derivatives. the second approach based on time domain simulation uses the coefficients with full respect to the nonlinear character of aerodynamics in ground effect. the trajectory is used to evaluate the dynamic stability and flight safety of the craft. From the results for typical perturbations, the limitations of the classical stability theory for the flight safety of Wing in Ground craft are shown. the results show the necessity of the automatic control system even for a satisfying stable craft predicted by the linear theory. the demand of high performance together with the hard constraints for states and control inputs are challenging for the controller design. A proportional-integral-derivative controller is studied to secure the flight safety of small craft under different perturbation and a methodology for designing a control system for operation under various weather conditions is illustrated. the repeated failure of Agitator in the Phosphoric acid Reactor in MPC was a major incident causing high downtime and production loss. While doing the root cause analysis of this "Class A" incident many causes not considered in normal agitator design were considered and analyzed. this paper lists such special cases and the proposed solutions and calculations to be incorporated in design of critical systems with varying process fluid parameters for different applications. Agitators constitute almost 20% of rotating equipment in a fertilizer and similar plants but are given less priority compared to others until a severe failure happens. there are no standard analytical design criteria for agitator design due to large variations and uncertainties in the process conditions in the reactor or tank. Most designs are left to the EPC companies using preformatted design models based on experimental results, on the combination of few variables. (Like Power Number, Pumping Number, Geometrical ratios etc.) However, none these models considers the fluid flow conditions which changes inside the reactor which affects the agitator design in many ways like Localized flow, non-homogenous fluid, solid contents, Liquid additives or recycling etc. which can cause much higher alternating forces and bending stresses at the joints holding the blades causing fatigue and other failures. this paper gives more quantitative design calculations to determine the forces acting on the agitator and blades as listed above which can be used in similar application even with different fluids.
