Suppressing or limiting the differential action of the differential mechanism is the mostly adopted technique to avoid the skidding of a driving wheel of a vehicle riding on a poorly adherent surface. the devices carrying out this function unbalance the traction force distribution in the differential, generating a yaw torque acting on the vehicle as a secondary effect. If the unbalancing action is electronically controlled, this yaw torque can be used to affect the attitude of car as a torque vectoring technique. In this paper, a purpose built differential is presented and its technical features are highlighted, including the electrohydraulic actuation. Moreover, its torque vectoring capabilities are discussed, basing on the numerical simulation campaign performed deploying this device in a 7 DOFs model of a race car with low ground effect. the results of these simulations are compared with the behavior of the same vehicle equipped with a common passive locking differential, to show that the proposed one and its control logic (which relies on only measurable inputs) are able of improving the handling of the vehicle, in terms of both vehicle stability and linearity with the driver's inputs. therefore, this system could be considered as a completion of the common ESC ("Electronic Stability Control) systems to control the vehicle attitude when using the brake system is an inefficient solution. In this study, three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses are performed to assess the thermal-hydraulic characteristics of a commercial Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers (GPHEx) with 30 degrees of chevron angle (Plate1). the results of CFD analyses are compared with a computer program (ETU HEX) previously developed based on experimental results. Heat transfer plate is scanned using photogrammetric scan method to model GPHEx. CFD model is created as two separate flow zones, one for each of hot and cold domains with a virtual plate. Mass flow inlet and pressure outlet boundary conditions are applied. the working fluid is water. Temperature and pressure distributions are obtained for a Reynolds number range of 700-3400 and total temperature difference and pressure drop values are compared with ETU HEX. A new plate (Plate2) with corrugation pattern using smaller amplitude is designed and analyzed. the thermal properties are in good agreement with experimental data for the commercial plate. For the new plate, the decrease of the amplitude leads to a smaller enlargement factor which causes a low heat transfer rate while the pressure drop remains almost constant. Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are multi-phase inhomogeneous composites, possessing smooth spatial variations in certain physical properties of the constituents. Depending on the types of the constituent materials used in the processing of orthotropic FGMs, the influences of thermal and hygroscopic loadings could be rather significant. this study is directed towards developing a new computational fracture analysis technique for orthotropic FGMs that are under mixedmode hygrothermal loading. the method is based on the use of the J-integral in conjunction with the asymptotic crack tip displacement fields. Developed computational technique is integrated into a finite element analysis software. Parametric analyses are carried out by considering an inclined edge crack in an orthotropic FGM layer that is subjected to the influence of hygrothermal loading. In order to be able to verify the proposed method, obtained results are compared to those computed via displacement correlation technique (DCT). Comparisons demonstrate that proposed technique leads to numerical results of high accuracy. Further results are provided to illustrate the influences of crack inclination angle and geometry on the temperature and the specific moisture concentration fields;and the modes I and II stress intensity factors. A good driving cycle is needed for accurate evaluation of a vehicle's performance in terms of emission and fuel consumption. Driving cycles obtained for certain cities or countries are not usually applicable to other cities or countries. therefore, considerable research has been conducted on developing driving cycles for certain cities and regions. In this paper, a driving cycle for a taxi in Amman city, the capital of Jordan, is developed. Significant differences are noted when comparing the Amman driving cycle with other driving cycles. A model of a gasoline powered vehicle is used to conduct a performance comparison in terms of fuel economy and emissions utilizing the developed Amman driving cycle and six other worldwide driving cycles. the developed Amman driving cycle is very useful in obtaining accurate estimation of fuel economy and emissions for vehicles running on Amman roads and will be used in future work to study the performance of hybrid fuel cell/ battery vehicles. this paper describes the development of a wearable interface that exploits the user's natural arm movements to intuitively control a robotic manipulator. the design is intended to alleviate the time and effort spent in operating the robotic manipulator, regardless of the age and technological experience of the user. the interface is made to be low-cost, comfortably worn, and easy to put on and remove. Kinematic models of human and robot arms are used to produce a natural mapping from the user's arm movements to the commanded movements of the robotic manipulator. An experiment is conducted with 30 participants of varied ages and experience to assess the usability of the wearable interface. Each of the participants is assigned to perform a pick and place task using two of three different interfaces (the wearable interface, a game controller, and a mobile interface running on a tablet computer) for a total of 60 trials. the results of the study show that the wearable interface is easier to learn compared to the alternative interfaces and is chosen as the preferred interface by the participants. Performance data shows that the users complete the pick and place task faster with the wearable interface than with the alternative interfaces. Copyright © 2014 by asme.

Prediction of dynamic behavior of electrodes of the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) fed by AC current is rather difficult because of several phenomena superposed, particularly during the first step of melting process, i.e. the so-called perforation, and in case of melting of metallic scrap. Unexpected ruptures of electrodes are often observed as a consequence of vibration. Dynamic excitation is applied by the vertical position control of the mast supporting the electrodes and by the Lorentz's forces generated by the magnetic flux provided by each electric phase. Moreover, the irregular distribution of stiffness along the electrode, being due to the sensitivity of material properties upon temperature, affects quite a lot the dynamic response of the structure. To identify the origin of the observed ruptures and to suitably predict the dynamic behavior of the whole system a modeling activity was performed. A numerical model of the EAF structures was built, by resorting to an integrated approach based on the Finite Element Method and on the Multi Body Dynamics, then it was preliminarily validated on an existing plant. It demonstrated that stiffening effect upon the graphite electrode induced by temperature distribution makes dangerous the action of the vertical position control, when it is applied too fast and excites the flexural modes of the electrode. Numerical model allowed refining the design of the electrode and improving the safety factor as well as finding some design requirement to suitably limit the operation of the position control system. In the last decade, there is a renewed interest in the integration of a sloshing tank into structural systems to decrease the vibrations of the structure. the purpose of this study is to try different numerical simulation programs for further use in studies in evaluation of the effectiveness of the sloshing tank absorbers for structural systems. the programs chosen for sloshing simulations are COMSOL Multiphysics®, ANSYS CFX and ANSYS-FLUENT. In the numerical simulations, the free surface shape during sloshing will be simulated under small and large amplitude sinusoidal displacements. the results obtained using different software will be compared with the results of the experiments reported in literature. Since the purpose is to use the sloshing forces on the container to decrease the structural response, the total force on the container walls is calculated and compared with the reported experimental results. the dynamics of a container coupled with the a structural model is simulated and forces applied on the container walls are analyzed in the frequency domain which is important in understanding the tuning of the vibration absorber. To the best of authors' knowledge, in a fluid-structure coupled system the frequency domain analysis of the container wall forces at varying amplitudes of sinusoidal excitation is not presented in literature. the results showed even though higher harmonic forcing magnitudes increase with increasing base motion, the fundamental harmonic component does not change significantly. this article presents the development and design of a laser cladding machine for in-situ marine diesel engine crankshaft repairs. the described technology and device is designed to perform crankpin journal renovation operations directly in the engine housing, without removing the crankshaft from the engine. this paper outlines the novel, in-situ concept of applying laser cladding to marine crankshaft repairs. Laser cladding technology is described along with the state of laser cladding implementation in modern production engineering. the principal design of the in-situ laser cladding machine is presented and accompanied by a detailed description of the insitu laser cladding machine construction. Arguments for the selection of appropriate laser nozzles are provided based on state-of-the-art technology. Technological challenges deriving from the industrial use of the laser equipment are outlined. the proposed device and method satisfy ship-board crankshaft surface renovation needs and open up an entirely new dimension for the industrial application of laser cladding technologies. this technology provides clear economic benefits and many technological advantages. the implantation of intravascular stent is a kind of coronary angioplasty to restore the blood flow perfusion to the downstream of the heart muscle tissue. Stent implantation is a mechanical procedure, the success of which depends to a good understanding of its mechanical behavior during the deployment. Computational studies may be used to investigate the mechanical behavior of stents and to determine the biomechanical interaction between the stent and the artery in a stenting procedure. the aim of this paper is to investigate the expansion characteristics of a certain stent as it is deployed and implanted in an artery containing a plaque, and try to reach to a model close to a real condition of stent implantation. Unlike most of the models proposed in the literature, all the steps of the deployment of a stent in the stenotic vessel (i.e. pressure increasing, constant load pressure and pressure decreasing) are simulated in this paper to show the behavior of stent in different stages of implantation. Results include stress distribution, radial gain, outer diameter changes, dogboning and foreshortening. According to the findings, the first step of deployment, i.e. pressure increasing, play a main role in the success of stent implantation. Copyright © 2014 by asme.

this paper presents a monolithic bistable micro-actuator with stroke reducing structure. A single pre-shaped beam was chosen as the bistable element. To constraint the rotation of the central point of the beam and get more precise output, two kinds of stroke reducing structures were designed and monolithically integrated into the actuator. the first design is purely based on flexible hinges. To decrease the dimension of the stroke reducing structure and maintain the output at the same order, a second hybrid stroke reducing structure integrated micro-actuator using flexible hinges and deflected beams was designed. Both devices were fabricated by laser machining of medium density fiberboard material. Outputs of the bistable micro-actuator before and after the reducing structure were measured by fiber optic distance sensor. the bistability was experimentally characterized. the output stroke before and after reduction for the first reducing structure are 2.38mm and 0.79μm. the outputs stroke before and after reduction for the second hybrid reducing structure are 2.38mm and 0.99μm.
