Although a certain amount of work has been presented in literature which concerns micro and nano tribology, few contributions have been dedicated to the development of experimental set up for friction assessment in MEMS. the present paper offers a contribution which attempts to fill this gap: the proposal of a new concept design of a micro-tribometer for testing silicon-silicon sliding in MEMS devices, particularly in those obtained via D-RIE process. Since the general contact conditions at the macro scale are very different from those which characterize MEMS, the proposed tribometer is very different from the classic pin-on-disk or block-on-ring. For this reason, a dedicated MEMS has been built, whose only purpose is recreating silicon-silicon sliding under prescribed loads and, then, assessing friction and wear. Since most of MEMS have planar relative motion, the tribometer presented in this article is able study only planar relative motions, and so it has been essentially based on a the creation of a pair of conjugate profiles, whose relative motion has been obtained by using Finite Element analysis (FEA) simulations, rather than by the classical centrodes theory. Computational occupant modelling has an effective role to play in investigating road safety. Realistic representation of occupants is very important to make investigations in virtual environment. Pregnant occupant modelling can help investigating safety for unborn occupants (fetuses) however, existing pregnant occupant models are not very realistic. Most do not anthropometrically represent pregnant women and do not include a fetus model. 'Expecting', a computational pregnant occupant model, developed with a view to simulate the dynamic response to crash impacts is briefly explained in this paper. the model is validated through rigid bar impacts and belt loading tests and used to simulate a wide range of impacts. 'Expecting', possess the anthropometric properties of a 5th percentile female at around the 38th week of pregnancy. the model is complete with a finite element uterus and a realistic multibody fetus which is a novel feature in models of this kind. In this paper, the effect of further developments to 'Expecting', by incorporating a finite element fetus head model is investigated. Further detailed anatomic geometry is used to generate deformable fetus head model. the model is used to simulate a range of frontal impacts with seatbelt and airbag, as well as no restraint cases. the strains developed in the uteroplacental interface are used as the main criteria for fetus safety. the effect of incorporating a finite element fetus head in the pregnant occupant model is discussed. Hydro turbines used in hydroelectric power plants need to be designed and tested according to the specifications of the specific power plant, mainly the head and flow rate. their models also need to be tested according to the standards provided by International Electrical Commission (IEC) before manufacturing the actual turbines. A Hydro turbine test rig at TOBB University of Economics and Technology is currently under construction to provide standardized tests for model turbines. A typical calibration system for a flow meter has four components;nozzle, flow diverter mechanism, weighing tank and load cells. the nozzle provides the regulation of water speed and supplies water to flow as a thin-sectioned profile. the flow diverter mechanism diverts the flow either to the weighing tank or to the reservoir. the flow rate is calculated from the collected mass and total time for the process. Calculated flow rate value is compared with the digitally measured values during the experiments, since the IEC standards require a real-time calibration for the flow rate. In this study, the flow diverter mechanism and the nozzle for this test rig is designed in order to meet several internationally acceptable standards. Copyright © 2014 by asme.

Transient laminar free convection in a water-filled rectangular enclosure has been studied experimentally and numerically. the study aimed at gaining an insight into the physical phenomena, illustrated by the flow patterns and the temperature stratification, from the initial stage of a homogeneous fluid through the transient evolving process. the experimental setup consisted of two rectangular water-filled enclosures: the smaller one contained a heat source and was centrally immersed in the larger one. Dye was injected for visualization of the rising boundary layer over the inner container walls, and the accumulation of the colored layers in the upper zone of the outer container. Simultaneously, the temperature measurements, by thermocouples and an infra-red camera, displayed the formation of a stratified structure. the numerical study was conducted three-dimensionally, using the Fluent 6.3 software. the stratified temperature field, observed experimentally, was well-predicted by the numerical model. the heat transfer rates and the transient averaged Nusselt numbers were compared with the data in the literature. the current, constant power input yielded Nu/Ra0.25∼0.7 in the range of Fo/Ra0.25 = 0-3. CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) algorithms are nowadays a necessary tool in the aerospace science, as their application allows for the prediction of the aerodynamic characteristics of complete aircraft configurations in a relatively short period of time. A brief presentation and evaluation of such a recently developed academic code, named Galatea, is the main goal of this study. Galatea employs the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations, discretized with a node-centered finite-volume scheme on three-dimensional unstructured hybrid grids for the simulation of inviscid and viscous compressible fluid flows. For the turbulence prediction appropriate turbulence models (k-Ε, k-ω and SST) have been incorporated, while for the acceleration of the solution an agglomeration multigrid scheme along with a suitable parallelization strategy are employed. For the assessment of this algorithm runs over the wing-body and the wing-bodyhorizontal tail NASA Common Research Model (CRM) configurations were performed, allowing for a comparison in terms of accuracy of the obtained results with the experimental wind tunnel data, as well as with the computational results of corresponding reference solvers. the race among the different nations to attain supremacy has given rise to twin crisis: depletion of fossil fuel reserves and degradation of environment. Every nation wants to increase the per capita income by producing more power. In order to achieve this feat, each nation has to burn huge amounts of fossil fuels causing an increase in the emission of greenhouse gases. In this regard, renewable energy can be a panacea to the above mentioned problems. Biogas, one form of biomass energy, has an immense potential as a renewable fuel. this biogas can be used successfully in diesel engines for the generation of power. However, in order to achieve an optimum efficiency, the operating parameters of the biogas run dual fuel engine have to be standardized. In such an engine, injection timing of the pilot fuel is one of the important operational parameters that greatly affects the engine performance. In view of this, in the present paper, an attempt has been made to standardize the injection timing of pilot fuel a biogas run dual fuel diesel engine on the basis of its performance and emission characteristics of. Experimental investigation demonstrates an improvement in efficiency and a reduction in emissions at the injection timing of 29° before top dead centre. Copyright © 2014 by asme.

Five axis machining and CAM software play key role to new manufacturing trends. Towards this direction, a series of 5 axis machining experiments were conducted in CAM environment to simulate operations and collect results for quality objectives. the experiments were designed using an L27 orthogonal array addressing four machining parameters namely tool type, stepover, lead angle and tilt angle (tool inclination angles). Resulting outputs from the experiments were used for the training and testing of a feed-forward, back-propagation neural network (FFBP-NN) towards the effort of optimizing surface deviation and machining time as quality objectives. the selected ANN inputs were the aforementioned machining parameters. the outputs were the surface deviation (SD) and machining time (tm). Experimental results were utilized to train, validate and test the ANN. Major goal is to provide results robust enough to predict optimal values for quality objectives, thus;support decision making and accurate machining modelling. Copyright © 2014 by asme.

the Jet and Vortex Actuator (JaVA) is a zero -net-mass flux device for active flow control. In this numerical study, we present a parametric study of JaVA in quiescent water and obtain time-averaged flow and vorticity fields. We systematically investigate the effect of the governing parameters that affect on the JaVA -induced flow characteristics. three jet Reynolds numbers are investigated in detail;ReJ = 68, 150 and 250 and for each jet-Reynolds number, four different wide-slot to plate width ratios are considered: gw = 0.0166, 0.0338, 0.066 and 0.10. In all cases, the scaled amplitude is kept at Sa = 0.15 and 0.30 so that a total of 24 different simulations are investigated. JaVA-induced flow types are classified in five groups: wall-jet, vertical-oblique jet, chaotic jet, weak jet and vortex mode. Based on the governing parameters (Sa, ReJ and gw) all these flow types have been identified the jet-momentums are calculated from phaseaveraged jet velocities obtained from numerical modeling results and compared to each other. It is found that generally the vortex mode transports the highest momentum flux followed by a chaotic jet. Copyright © 2014 by asme.

Numerical algorithm for non-stationary covariance analysis of nonlinear mechanical system using equivalent stochastic linearization 12

A quite important topic of structural dynamics is deterministic mechanical systems subjected to stochastic dynamic actions, such as for wind or earthquake. IN such cases structural response have to be properly evaluated by a stochastic approach. Unfortunately for nonlinear mechanical systems only in a very few cases exact solutions are available, and usually simply approximate solutions should be used. A well known one is stochastic equivalent linearization, easy and simple from the conceptual point of view. Moreover it needs of specific numerical techniques to be properly implemented, whose complexity increases in case of non stationary conditions. In this paper a procedure to solve covariance analysis of stochastic linearized systems in case of non stationary excitation is proposed. the no stationary Lyapunov differential matrix covariance equation for the linearized system is solved by using a numerical algorithm that updates linearized system matrix coefficients step by step. this by a predictor-corrector procedure applied to a Euler-implicit integration scheme for the matrix covariance analysis. It is described in details to be simpler implemented by other researchers, and then applied to a typical and important applicative case, that is seismic response of a Bouc Wen Single Degree of Freedom (SDoF) system. Seismic input processes is modeled as linear filtered white noise non stationary separable process. Accuracy and computational costs are analyzed showing the efficiency of the proposed integrating procedure. Copyright © 2014 by asme.

the design of flanges can be approached through different routes some of which [1] involve use of plate and shell theory and some [2] use concepts like "Equivalent Pressure". A rigorous finite element analysis is a solution, but it is not always practical to do so considering the complexity of the problem and the man-hour requirement for the same. Particularly for piping systems where the number of flanges are many, an engineer always looks for a robust and easy to apply method and the method outlined in the American Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code asme SEC III (for nuclear plants) [2], paragraph NC3658.3 provides one such method. It simply involves checking if the applied bending moment is within an allowable limit. theoretically this method addresses the design from the standpoint of checking the bolt stress and also if the applied loading will overstress the flange. this method can easily be developed in simple spreadsheet form and is an integral part of almost every commercially available pipe stress program. the difficulty of using this method is that its applicability has been recommended in [2] as for asme B16.5 flanges only i.e. for a maximum pipe size of 24". Frequently an engineer encounters a pipe size which is greater than 24" and the applicability of this method for such flanges becomes a question mark. In this paper, applicability of the NC3658.3 method for flanges >24" has been investigated based on the standpoint of computing operating stress in bolts which is the basis of this method and also the results have been checked against finite element analysis.
