When the Norwegian government introduced the CO2 tax for hydrocarbon fuels, the challenge became to improve the performance of off-shore power systems. An oil and gas platform typically operates on an island (stand-alone system) and the power demand is covered by two or more gas turbines. In order to improve the plant performance, a bottoming cycle unit can be added to the gas turbine topping module, thus constituting a combined cycle plant. this paper aims at developing and testing the numerical model simulating the partload and dynamic behavior of a novel power system, composed of two gas turbines and a combined gas turbine coupled with an air bottoming cycle plant. the case study is the Draugen offshore oil and gas platform, located in the North Sea, Norway. the normal electricity demand is 19 MW, currently covered by two gas turbines generating each 50% of the power demand, while the third turbine is on stand-by. During oil export operations the power demand increases up to 25 MW. the model of the new power plant proposed in this work is developed in the Modelica language using basic components acquired from thermoPower, a library for power plant modelling. the dynamic model of the gas turbine and the air bottoming cycle turbogenerator includes dynamic equations for the combustion chamber, the shell-and-tube recuperator and the turbine shafts. Turbines are modelled by the Stodola equation and by a correlation between the isentropic efficiency and the non-dimensional flow coefficient. Compressors are modelled using quasi steady-state conditions by scaling the maps of axial compressors employing a similar design point. the recuperator, which recovers the exhaust heat from the gas turbine, is modelled using correlations relating the heat transfer coefficient and the pressure drop at part-load with the mass flow rate. thermodynamic variables and dynamic metrics, such as the rise time and the frequency undershooting/ overshooting, are predicted. In recent years with the exacerbation of energy shortage around the world and the continuous increase in the level of greenhouse gas emissions, the use of various sources of renewable energy is increasingly becoming important for sustainable development. Solar energy is considered to be one of the most promising sources of energy, owing to its clean and renewable characteristics. thermal energy storage (TES) is used to assist in the effective utilization of thermal energy in wide number of industrial and domestic applications. thermal energy is stored as sensible heat (SHS) or latent heat (LHS). Sensible heat storage (SHS) materials are combination of materials (both solids and liquids) which undergo no phase change in the defined temperature range of the storage process. Example concrete, cast steel, cast iron etc. the use of a latent heat storage system (LHS) using phase change materials (PCMs) is an effective way of storing thermal energy and has the advantages of high energy storage density, narrow operating temperature range and the isothermal nature of the storage process. the phase change materials are more energy dense than sensible energy storage when the temperature difference between heat source and sink are low. Phase change material can store or release energy through its morphology change mechanism. these advantages lead to small volume and less heat loss, which attract attention of researchers in different fields. Ex: Sodium acetate trihydrate, NaNO3. there are large numbers of PCMs that melt and solidify at a wide range of temperatures, making them attractive in a number of applications. the flow patterns in two phase and multi-phase flows is a significant factor which influences many other parameters such as drag force, drag coefficient and pressure drop in pipe lines. One of the major streams in the gas and oil industries is oilwater two phase flow. the main flow patterns in oil-water flows are bubbly, slug, dual continuous, stratified and annular. In the present work flow patterns in two phase oil-water flow were investigated in a 0.5in diameter pipe with length of 2m. 3D simulation was used for this pipe and six types of mesh grid were used to investigate mesh independency of the simulation. the proposed numerical analyses were performed by a CFD package which is based both on volume of fluid (VOF) and Eulerian-Eulerian methods. the results showed that some flow patterns can be simulated better with VOF method and some other maybe in Eulerian-Eulerian method, so these two methods were compared with together for all flow patterns. the flow patterns may be a function of many parameters in flow. One of the important parameter which may affect flow patterns in pipe line is pipe inclination angle;therefore flow patterns in the different pipe inclination angles were investigated in two phase oil-water flow. the range of inclinations has been varied between -45 to +45 degree about the horizon. In the presented simulation oil is mixed with water via a circular hole at center of the pipe, the ratio of oil surface to water surface at entrance is 2/3 so water phase was considered as the main phase. Flow patterns were investigated for every angle of pipe and numerical results were compared with available experimental data for verification. Also the flow patterns simulated by numerical approaches were compared with available flow regime maps in the previous literatures. Finally, effect of pipe inclination angle and flow patterns on the pressure loss were investigated comprehensively. Copyright © 2014 by asme.

Interest to sailing in arctic zone is increasing, as due to the climatic change, the seasons when northeast and northwest passages are open enough for see transportation, are getting every year longer and longer. Some other activities like oil and gas exploration and drilling at Barents Sea require also regular sea traffic connections to be opened. Sea operations at arctic zone are challenging, because thick ice generates a high magnitude dynamic load against the hull and the propulsion units. Turning and backward sailing in thick ice field are the most critical operations, in which the steerable propulsion units are in totally different service as in the regular open sea cruising. In such operations the ice field, when guided downwards along the slope of the hull, is broken to large plates, which then are fed against the propulsion unit. the steering propulsion unit itself is a vertically mounted inverse mast column, at the top of which the horizontally spinning propeller(s) can be vertically turned to follow the steering commands. Such cantilever structure is now under random collision process when the column is breaking the underwater ice plates to smaller blocks. For hydrodynamic reasons the column has a limited cross-sectional area as compared to the propeller area making it sensitive to bending vibrations. Another dynamic interaction with ice is coming from the periodical blade-ice contact when the ice blocks pushed down to the propulsion depth are completely milled by the units. these two parallel dynamic processes have been the reason for several serious damages and losses of propulsion units leading to expensive service operations by means of support vessels. the purpose of this study has been to model the underwater propulsion system with all essential structures, parts and interactions with the surrounding fluid field and floating ice blocks. this brings a complex analysis, in which random collisions and periodical machining forces are loading the elastic

A previous IPC conference paper (1) described the technical challenges associated with the installation of a new hot tap connection, supplementary to an existing hot tap connection, on the Bord Gais Eireann Brighouse Bay high pressure gas export terminal in the UK. Work carried out to verify that the hot tap connection would be fit for purpose included a pipe stress analysis, Finite Element analysis (FEA) and engineering Critical Assessment (ECA). these assessments were performed because the split tee shell thickness and consequently also the circumferential fillet weld leg lengths did not achieve the 2 x carrier pipe thickness criterion required by UK specifications for applications where design stress levels exceed 30% specified minimum yield strength. Subsequently, it was identified that the existing hot tap connection installed in 2001 also did not meet the 2 x carrier pipe thickness criterion. Furthermore the material grade was lower than that for newer hot tap, i.e. P355 compared with P460 and the tee had been chamfered down from 50 mm to 40 mm at the ends, leading to reduced section circumferential fillet welds. this resulted in a leaner design than that for the newer hot tap and an asme B31.3 area replacement calculation revealed that the area replacement ratio barely achieved the 1.0 requirement of the code suggesting a limited tolerance to system loading. Consequently similar stress analysis, FEA and ECA assessments to those previously undertaken were also subsequently performed for the existing hot tap connection. this paper provides details of the analyses and results obtained to determine the integrity of the existing hot tap split tee assembly which required a bespoke approach and a need to challenge conventional thinking.

Currently the most promising solution for marine propulsion is the two-stroke low-speed diesel engine. Start of Injection (SOI) is of significant importance for these engines due to its effect on firing pressure and specific fuel consumption. therefore these engines are usually equipped with Variable Injection Timing (VIT) systems for variation of SOI with load. Proper operation of these systems is essential for both safe engine operation and performance since they are also used to control peak firing pressure. However, it is rather difficult to evaluate the operation of VIT system and determine the required rack settings for a specific SOI angle without using experimental techniques, which are extremely expensive and time consuming. For this reason in the present work it is examined the use of on-board monitoring and diagnosis techniques to overcome this difficulty. the application is conducted on a commercial vessel equipped with a two-stroke engine from which cylinder pressure measurements were acquired. From the processing of measurements acquired at various operating conditions it is determined the relation between VIT rack position and start of injection angle. this is used to evaluate the VIT system condition and determine the required settings to achieve the desired SOI angle. After VIT system tuning, new measurements were acquired from the processing of which results were derived for various operating parameters, i.e. brake power, specific fuel consumption, heat release rate, start of combustion etc. From the comparative evaluation of results before and after VIT adjustment it is revealed an improvement of specific fuel consumption while firing pressure remains within limits. It is thus revealed that the proposed method has the potential to overcome the disadvantages of purely experimental trial and error methods and that its use can result to fuel saving with minimum effort and time. the diesel engine is widely used for marine vessel propulsion due to its relatively high efficiency compared to existing alternative propulsion systems. the majority of these engines are slow speed two stroke ones. Despite the improvement of their efficiency there now exists a demand for drastic reduction of daily fuel oil consumption as a result of the global financial situation and continuously increasing fuel prices. Towards this effort, slow steaming is a promising solution for the drastic reduction of daily and specific fuel consumption when expressed in tn/mile. this requires engine operation in the low load (low speed) range where these engines are not designed to operate for long term. the main problem related to slow-steaming, is the lack of air which has a negative impact on the engine and its subsystems. A promising solution to the problem is turbocharger (T/C) cut-out at low load when more than one T/C exists. In the present work a combined computational and experimental investigation is conducted to evaluate the operation potential of a large two stroke marine diesel engine equipped with two T/Cs using T/C cut-out, for which the specific technology presents various challenges. this is achieved using an in-house engine simulation model and measurements with and without T/C cut-out. From the results it is revealed that using this technique the scavenging air and peak firing pressure increase while the specific fuel consumption decreases. In this way, some major problems related with the long term operation of the engine under low load conditions, i.e. accumulation of carbon deposits on the exhaust gas side and continuous operation of the auxiliary air blowers, are surpassed Moreover, a theoretical investigation is conducted considering fuel injection retard to minimize the peak firing pressure penalty while taking care to limit the corresponding negative impact on specific fuel consumption. the geotechnical aspect of the design of off-shore oil and gas pipelines is a challenge due to inherent uncertainties in predicting soil-pipe interaction behaviour. Physical modeling is often sought after to gain insight into such problems. this is especially true for pipelines laid in deep waters that are partially embedded in the seabed. this paper presents initial observations arising from full-scale laboratory simulations of typical soil-pipe interaction scenarios of partially buried steel pipes. Bare and epoxy-coated NPS18 steel pipes, each measuring 2.5 m in length, were separately tested in a soil chamber by simulating: (i) lateral pipe displacement;and (ii) longitudinal pipe displacement, under partial embedment in two idealized soil bed models, i.e., in a coarse-grained soil bed model with full drainage, and a fullysaturated fine-grained soil bed model with partial drainage. Gas diffusion layer (GDL) is undoubtedly one of the most complicated components used in a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) in terms of liquid and gas transport phenomena. An appropriate fuel cell design seeks a fundamental study of this tortuous porous component. Currently, porosity and gas permeability have been known as some of the key parameters affecting liquid and gas transport through GDL. Although these are dominant parameters defining mass transport through porous layers, there are still many other factors affecting transport phenomena as well as overall cell performance. In this work, microstructural properties of Toray carbon papers with different thicknesses and for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) treated and untreated cases have been studied based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image analysis. Water droplet contact angle as a dominant macro-scale property as well as mean pore diameter, pore diameter distribution, and pore roundness distribution as important micro-scale properties have been studied. It was observed that the mean pore diameter of Toray carbon paper does not change with its thickness and PTFE content. Mean pore diameter for Toray carbon papers was calculated to be around 26 mu m regardless of their thicknesses and PTFE, content. It was also observed that droplet contact angle on GDL surface does not vary with GDL thickness. the average contact angle for 10 wt.% PTFE treated GDLs of different thicknesses was measured about 150 degrees. Finally, the heterogeneous in-plane PTFE distribution on the GDL surface was observed to have no effect on mean pore diameter of GDLs.
