this paper presents bio-inspired algorithms for coalition formation of a mobile agent-based modular robot system. A mathematical model for coalition formation is described. Two bio-inspired algorithms, ant-colony algorithm and genetic algorithm, are introduced for solving the mathematical model. Multiple experiments were run and the final results are shown in both mathematically and graphically. the graphical simulation is implemented by RoboSim which is built atop Ch, a C/C++ interpreter providing powerful features for solving engineering problems. the performance of both algorithms is shown by comparing different scenarios.

A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is an alternative/augmentative communication device that can provide users with a different interaction path, based on the interpretation of his/her brain activity. Such technology, applied to Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) contexts, could potentially make the full set of features of such systems accessible to users affected by severe motor impairments, for whom the interaction with the surrounding environment is troublesome. In this paper, a low cost BCI development platform, consisting of a hardware acquisition unit and a Matlab-based prototyping environment is presented. BCI performance assessed by means of an illustrative application example using a 4 class SSVEP paradigm to switch on and off lights. Comparison with other reference methods from literature is also presented.

thermoelectric generation is a promising technology which converts waste heat into electricity in an efficient and clean way. thermoelectric application could utilize the heat from a device to power a thermoelectric generator (TEG) which in turn produces power that could run a cooling system. Such systems would be critical in transportation, remote area or other applications where system reliability is of a paramount importance. thus, in this paper a detailed parametrical analysis and optimization of the geometrical and system parameters are made so as to provide guidelines for the design of self-cooling devices. A simple and accurate 2D numerical model is developed which facilitates a quick analysis of design variables. Numerical data is within a good agreement (within 6%) with existing experimental data. the effect of extender height (Hext), fin base height (Hfbase), number of fins (Nfin) ranging from 10 mm to 50 mm, 2 mm to 12 mm, 24 to 64 respectively has been studied. In addition, the feasibility of using double and triple cascaded TEG system is investigated. An optimization algorithm to optimize system paramaters is implemented.

the paper presents the concept of an underactuated spherical wrist with parallel kinematics architecture and the use of non-holonomic constraints: two linear actuators are sufficient to drive the 3 d.o.f.'s of the spherical motion since the instantaneous kinematics is limited to span a space of dimension 2 by the presence of a (non-holonomic) roller-sphere contact. the use of 4 position sensors allows to obtain just one solution for the direct orientation problem, with very simple mathematical passages. After having developed the direct and inverse orientation and velocity kinematics, the potential performances of the concept are investigated with reference to a virtual prototype and are compared with the corresponding performances of the original S-3SPU concept it is derived from.

During July 2013 the Italian government definitively cut financial incentives for photovoltaic (PV) plants, leaving only tax benefits and a revised net metering scheme (known as “Scambio sul Posto”) for new PV installations. In this scenario, the design of a new PV plant ensuring savings on electricity bills is strongly related to household electricity consumption patterns. this paper introduces a novel Fuzzy approach to correctly size a residential PV plant and simulate the effects of energy management techniques in a case study. A cost benefits analysis is presented to quantify its effectiveness in the new net metering Italian scenario.

In this work, we investigate a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) arch microbeam actuated by fringing electric field where the electrodes are located at both side of the microbeam. An electrostatic force caused by asymmetry of the fringing electric fields acts in a direction opposite to the relative deflection of the microbeam, resulting in a restoring electrostatic force which increasing with the applied DC voltage. A reduced-order model (ROM) is derived for the considered system using the so-called Galerkin decomposition and assuming linear undamped mode shapes of a straight beam as basis functions in the decomposition process. A static analysis is performed to investigate the occurrence of the snap-through instability. the eigenvalue problem is then investigated to obtain the fundamental as well as higher natural frequencies variation of the microbeam with the applied DC load. A bifurcation analysis is then implemented to derive a criterion for whether symmetric or asymmetric bifurcation is occurring during the static snap-through instability. the results show elimination of the so-called pull-in instability in this kind of systems as the stationary electrodes are located on either sides rather than at the bottom as in case parallel plate actuation. this system can be useful to design pull-in free MEMS bi-stable devices.

design and analysis was performed on an atmospheric breathing propulsion system to land large-scale spacecraft on Mars. Initial feasibility of the engine was investigated analytically by employing equilibrium combustion and finite rate kinetics simulations in addition to 1st order propellant mass and inlet sizing. ISP values (based on total propellant usage) were determined to be on the order of 120s-160s for onboard subsystems having a 10- to-1 oxidizer compression ratio. this corresponds to an ISP of 600s-800s based on fuel consumption. While Mg-CO2 mixtures have significant ignition constraints, favorable conditions were found, yielding ignition delay times of less than 1ms, by simultaneously employing designs exploiting both large reentry Mach numbers and modest compression ratios. these combinations allow for combustion to occur within moderately sized combustion chambers. the 1st order sizing calculations confirmed that atmospheric breathing supersonic retropropulsion has the potential for significant mass savings over traditional retropropulsion architectures. Engines sized with an oxidizer-to-fuel ratio of 4 require half the propellant consumption for an equivalent change in velocity. Inlet capture areas of the examined atmospheric breathing propulsion systems were on the order of the corresponding entry vehicle projected area. therefore, this study envisioned an annular inlet design, which encircled the vehicle forebody. the aforementioned analyses address some of the challenges that need to be solved in order to ultimately obtain a practical atmospheric breathing supersonic retropropulsion system for Mars descent. © 2014 by Keir Gonyea, Robert Braun. Planogram is a detailed visual map of products in a retail store and establishes the position of products in order to increase sales and to supply the best location for suppliers. So, the aims of “correct” planogram are several and are: increasing sales, increasing profits, introducing a new item, supporting an innovative merchandising approach, and better manages the shelves. Deviating from the planogram defeats the purpose of any of those goals. A fundamental aspect in the retail operations is to maintain the integrity of the planogram. this work intends to provide a solution to this problem, proposing a system that individually identifies the presence of a specific product in the image of a shelf. this even though the product is moved, rotated, misplaced, or even in poor lighting conditions. this paper presents a method to find and count multiple instances of the same object that occurs into an image of a shelf in a store without using classifiers. the procedures here described are based on a heuristic algorithm that involves morphological operation, template matching and histogram comparison. Experimental results are presented in order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach. they demonstrate that the algorithm provides satisfactory results when the user manually chooses the most significant label of the product to find in the shelf image.

the stability of industrial vehicles, such as forklifts and lifters, is very important from a safety point of view: these vehicles are subjected to variable loading conditions and their design is often optimized to privilege handling in narrow spaces, instead of stability. To study in deep the problem of vehicle capsize prevention, the authors developed a scaled AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle). It is a three wheeled differential drive mobile robot, with front motorized wheels, driven by speed-controlled drivers. the position of the wheels and the loads can be easily modified to simulate different vehicle configurations and operating scenarios. the vehicle is controlled with a Texas Instrument C2000 controller, programmable through Matlab-Simulink Embedded Coder™. In addition, the forces exchanged among the wheels and the ground are monitored using low cost load cells, with miniaturized amplification stages. MEMS three-axial accelerometers and gyros are installed in order to detect inertial loads and to estimate the vehicle pose and, through a proper filtering, the ground slope. the implemented strategy is able to identify the loading conditions of the vehicle by means of a dedicated algorithm: this algorithm evaluates the position of the center of mass from static measurements that are further refined when the vehicle is in motion with an adaptive filtering based on the fusion of both static and dynamic measurements. Once the vehicle is in motion, the controller, to prevent the vehicle capsize, is able to limit its forward speed without changing the geometry of the assigned trajectory. In this work, the results of preliminary testing activities are shown, demonstrating the validity and the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
