A High-density polyethylene has been used for buried plastic pipe production for over a decade. the structural performance of these pipes mainly depends on the viscoelastic properties of using materials. the aim of this study is to determine the creep behavior of PE100 material under constant tensile and flexural stress within 24 hours. In both tests, large deformation occurs within the first 1000 seconds and then very little or no deformation is observed. Primary and secondary creep stages have also been observed. At highest stress level, maximum strain is 5%, approximately. At the flexural creep experiments, modulus of the material has been obtained from total deflection value at the end of 24 hours by using three point bending experiment under constant load. Large deflection occurs within in first 1000 seconds, after that, continues to increase slowly. Maximum strain is about 2%. the material exhibits linear viscoelastic response to 8 MPa stress level.

Among the solutions to the rotor unbalance problem, the previous art shows the use of passive balancers. the liquid balance ring fall in this category, which basically consists of a hollow ring equipped with a number of anti-sloshing baffle boards inside the cavity. the liquid contained within the ring adopts an antagonist position to the unbalance, thus balancing the rotor. Nowadays, in regard to the shape of the baffles boards employed in liquid balance ring devices, the use of straight baffles is the standard practice. However, as the fluid is subjected to rotation, it makes sense to believe that there should be a better baffle shape to enhance the fluid-solid interaction and improve the balance ring dynamic performance. this research work introduces for the first time a balance ring with curved (forward and backward) blades that remarkably enhance the unbalance response of rotors in the transient and steady-state. A classical dynamics model of this novel bladed concept is introduced and employed in designing a liquid balance ring for high-speed performance. Experimental data showing good correlation between the model and tests is presented.

Palm oil methyl ester (POME) produced from crude palm oil have some excellent properties which makes it a feasible alternative to diesel fuel. However, its higher oxygen content makes it nitrogen oxide emission prone when burned in diesel engines. this problem can be resolved by emulsifying POME with distilled water in the presence of suitable surfactant. Two phase water in oil emulsion is prepared by using ultrasonic bath sonication. SPAN 80, a lipophilic surfactant is used for 1% by volume to prepare the emulsion. Water quantity in the emulsion is varied by 5% and 10% by volume and stability study is performed. It is found that emulsion with 5% water is more stable. thereafter, POME emulsion samples are prepared with 5% water and tested in a variable compression ratio diesel engine. the performance and emission characteristics are investigated for a set of loads and compression ratios (CR). the experimental observations show that 5% water in POME produce 3.5% lower brake thermal efficiency and 11% higher brake specific fuel consumption as compared to baseline diesel. Furthermore, the exhaust gas temperature and other emissions like oxides of carbon, oxides of nitrogen and hydrocarbon for the emulsified POME are found to be lower than the baseline diesel.

this work deals with the complete stability analysis in the case of two dimensional fluid flows searching for steady and Hopf bifurcations. the stability analysis starts with the computation of steady bifurcations. It is realized by first considering the monitoring of an indicator which is a scalar function. the indicator is computed via a perturbation method: the Asymptotic Numerical Method. Steady bifurcation point corresponds to the zero of this indicator. From this singular point, all the steady bifurcated branches are computed by using the perturbation method. then the stability analysis is pursued with the computation of Hopf bifurcations by a hybrid method. this latter consists in coupling a continuation method with a direct Newton solver. the continuation method allows the bifurcation indicator to be determined using alternating reduced order and full size steps resolution. the quantities coming from the bifurcation indicator are used as initial approximations for the direct method iterations. then an augmented system whose solutions are Hopf bifurcation is solved by a direct method of Newton kind. the examples of the one side and two sides lid driven cavities show the reliability and the efficiency of the proposed numerical tools.

Grinding is always one of the most significant processes in manufacturing sector due to its high precision and accuracy and especially nowadays where the demand for higher quality products has been raised. Its importance lies on the fact that it stands at the final stages of a component's manufacturing chain and therefore, the possibility of errors must be at the lowest levels. Heretofore, the improvement of this process has motivated a number of researchers to develop different techniques. In the current work a novel method of vibration-assisted surface grinding of mild and hardened steel using aluminium oxide grinding wheels is examined. More specifically, the design concept along with the dynamic characteristics of a simplified vibrating jig is, presented. the purpose of this jig was to accommodate and oscillate the. workpiece at a certain frequency during surface grinding in order to improve the performance of the process in terms of achieving lower grinding forces and thus lower power consumption, higher material removal rates and better product surface finish. Two grinding wheels and two workpiece materials with different properties were employed during conventional and vibration-assisted surface grinding and the results are compared. the benefits of this non-conventional, advanced grinding process are also illustrated.

the "gear rattle" phenomenon is a research topic of great interest for the NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) automotive sector, concerning driveline noise and vibrations coming from the manual gear boxes. It is due to the internal combustion engine variable torque producing impacts and rebounds, and consequently noise, between the teeth of the unloaded gear pairs of the gear box because of the unavoidable presence of backlashes. Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is used to decompose the angular relative motion signal and the wavelet decomposition details are adopted to analyze the dynamic behaviour of gears under rattle conditions. the DWT has been chosen because it is a particularly suitable instrument to recognize discontinuities, such as jumps or instantaneous changes in the slope of the signals, due to their localization in the time domain. Wavelet analysis allows to characterize an event by the localization, the kind, and the amplitude of the event. this technique enables, moreover, to define new indices for metrics of gear rattle especially useful in order to conduct comparisons among different operative conditions. Some examples of application of the proposed technique are reported in the paper. the theoretical investigations regard comparative analysis with respect to the amplitude and to the frequency of speed fluctuations and to the gears lubrication regime.

the need for geometrical variations management is an important issue in design, manufacturing and all other phases of product development. Two main axioms cover geometrical variations, namely the axiom of manufacturing imprecision and the axiom of measurement uncertainty. therefore, this paper reviews common models for the description of non-ideal geometry (shape with geometric deviations) and shows how the random field theory can be applied to create more realistic skin models (a model which comprises these geometric deviations). Furthermore, methods to estimate and to express the underlying random field from a sample population are shown. these can be used to create and simulate random shapes considering systematic and random deviations observed through measurement or gathered from manufacturing process simulations. the proposed approach incorporates given information from manufacturing process simulations or prototypes. Based on these information, skin model samples are created which can represent the "realistic" part in assembly simulations or other geometrical analyses. this can help to identify the optimal tolerance sets within every stage of the product development process. the efficiency of the introduced approaches is shown in a case study.

In this work we apply an innovative participative design approach for the quality evaluation of virtual prototypes of new industrial products (i.e. concept designs), by adopting statistical procedures and carrying out tests in an immersive VR environment. this methodology has been fully exploited through a case study concerning the choice of the optimal design for the interiors of a new regional train. Following this approach, the optimal concept design is defined at the end of a process consisting of five phases: identification of the quality elements of the concept design, classification of the quality elements;generation and quality evaluation of product concepts and, finally, definition of the optimal concept. According to the applied methodology after the identification of the customer's needs, a structured set of quality elements has been defined and, successively, classified according to Kano's theory. Following the approach of conjoint analysis, the design factors have been combined according to an experimental plan to form product virtual concepts. During the concepts generation phase we have explored those product architectures that integrate design characteristics correlated to the set of quality elements. the concepts have been created according to comfort, ergonomic and safety criteria. In particular we have considered the ergonomics of places and furniture dimensions, through the use of virtual manikins. the evaluation of the quality of the different concepts has been carried out in the VR laboratory (named "VRTest") of the Competence Centre for the Qualification of Transportation systems founded by Regione Campania according to an original statistical procedure and has involved a group of experts in train's interiors design and a group of common users of regional trains.

the design of systems architectures often involve a combinatorial design-space made of technological and architectural choices. A complete or large exploration of this design space requires the use of a method to generate and evaluate design alternatives. this paper proposes an innovative approach for the design-space exploration of systems architectures. the SAMOA (System Architecture Model-based OptimizAtion) tool associated to the method is also introduced. the method permits to create a large number of various system architectures combining a set of possible components to address given system functions. the method relies on models that are used to represent the problem and the solutions and to evaluate architecture performances. An algorithm first synthesizes design alternatives (a physical architecture associated to a functional allocation) based on the functional architecture of the system, the system interfaces, a library of available components and user-defined design rules. Chains of components are sequentially added to an initially empty architecture until all functions are fulfilled. the design rules permit to guarantee the viability and validity of the chains of components and, consequently, of the generated architectures. the design space exploration is then performed in a smart way through the use of an evolutionary algorithm, the evolution mechanisms of which are specific to system architecting. Evaluation modules permit to assess the performances of alternatives based on the structure of the architecture model and the data embedded in the component models. these performances are used to select the best generated architectures considering constraints and quality metrics. this selection is based on the Pareto-dominance-based NSGA-II algorithm or;alternatively, on an interactive preference-based algorithm. Efficient belts can provide the same magnitude of energy savings as energy-efficient motors. therefore, belt drives deserve greater attention, so that their losses should be minimized. the belt drive power losses are a combination of torque losses and speed losses. However, the determination of belt drive behavior in terms of power losses requires extensive experimental investigations. therefore, in this study, belt slip and torque losses were investigated experimentally with a laboratory constructed test bench. Measurement System analysis (MSA) was performed in order to investigate the test rig reliability. Special attention was paid for experimental test setup, testing and modeling of torque loss behavior of V-ribbed belt drive systems. Significant design parameters were investigated.
