this paper aims at handling high dimensional uncertainty propagation problems by proposing a tensor product approximation method based on regression techniques. the underlying assumption is that the model output functional can be well represented in a separated form, as a sum of elementary tensors in the stochastic tensor product space. the proposed method consists in constructing a tensor basis with a greedy algorithm and then in computing an approximation in the generated approximation space using regression with sparse regularization. Using appropriate regularization techniques, the regression problems are well posed for only few sample evaluations and they provide accurate approximations of model outputs. this work addresses the design of a preference based system that suggests relevant products to customers. It aims at helping them with their purchase decision (on electronic commerce websites). A use case that consists in making spontaneous recommendations to the customers, on the basis of their previous ratings is described. the product considered to illustrate the approach is a comic. this paper is focused on two recommender approaches. the first approach, "the traditional" approach, is based on the collaborative filtering while the second approach, is based on a new proposed algorithm. Collaborative filtering is a technique to making recommendations by matching people with the same preferences (preferential similarity). the second approach which is proposed is a combination of the traditional collaborative filtering and the perceptual similarities approach between customers (perceptual similarity). Perceptive data include emotional, sensory and semantic ratings of the products. the purpose of this paper is to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach and to compare it with the traditional approach. A test procedure is thus implemented. It consists in simulating customers' behavior according to a set of products, and to compute a performance criterion of the recommender system, measuring the relevance of the proposed products. the performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with that of the traditional one. the results show that the consideration of perceptual assessments of products by customers generally helps in the relevance of the propositions of the system.

this paper proposes to use anon-linear observer to build the state and the external force of flexible manipulator robots during their machining (composite materials) processes or Friction Stir Welding (FSW) processes. these two different processes have a problem in common: the flexibility of the robot can not be neglected, that is to say, the errors due to the deformation of the links should be taken into account. However in most industrial robots, the real positions and velocities of each link are not measured, so in this study, an observer is proposed to reconstruct the real angular positions and velocities of links by using the measured angular positions and the velocities of actuators. A simulation by Matlab/Simulink has been carried out with a 2 axis Robot during its machining processes: the proposed observer showed great performances in estimating the state of the robot (position and velocity). then, in order to improve the tracking accuracy in the tool frame, the state of the external force along the forward direction (x) and its normal direction (y) are required, while they are also not measured by our robot. A disturbance observer has been added to reconstruct the processing force. A good precision during the proposed processes have been obtained using the latter this study contributes to solve the problem from the point of view of accuracies during the machining processes.

Energy consumption during the use phase often contributes significantly to the overall energy demand and to the environmental impacts of an elect(on)ic product's lifecycle. therefore, regulations, standards, and customers tend to demand that the electronic industry supplies products with lesser consumption. However, manufacturers lack of systematic methods and tools to integrate energy consumption into their design projects from the early design phases. this paper presents the Synergico method which is meant to be incorporated in the current design practices of manufacturing companies, therefore helping design more energetically efficient electr(on)ic products without compromising the other design criteria (ergonomics, performances, usage value, quality, cost, delay, etc.). this method is based on three tools to use from the earliest design phases. Firstly, an In-Use Energy consumption indicator providing an assessment of the energy consumption during the use phase during each design phase. thanks to the consideration of several use scenarios, it calculates values of the product's energy consumption for each product sub-assembly, and each operating mode, thus monitoring the consumption and compliance of a product with design objectives. Secondly, a Guideline-based tool adapted to electronic products. these guidelines can easily be filtered to consider only the most relevant ones according to the context (design phase, expert concerned, scope of the guideline, etc.). thirdly, a Lifecycle Check tool to verify that no pollution trade-offs, between life cycle phases, would hinder the design of an energy efficient product with good overall environmental performances. A case study illustrates the use and integration of the Synergico method and the way it coordinates the tools.

Within the collaborative research centre 666 "Integral Sheet Metal design with Higher Order Bifurcations" the innovative manufacturing technologies linear flow-splitting and linear bend-splitting are researched that allow the continuous production of multi-chambered steel profiles in integral style. the massive forming processes create an ultra-fine grained microstructure in the forming area that is characterized by an increased hardness and lower surface roughness compared to as received material. these properties predestine the technology to be used in the production of linear guides. Additionally, the multi-chambered structure of the linear flow-split and -bend components can be used for function integration. To design and evaluate linear guides that use the whole technological potential, the research is focused on a macroscopic and a microscopic point of view. the macroscopic approach is targeting the development of linear flow-split linear guides with integrated functions to provide additional performance values to the established machine parts. Continuously produced guidance systems with innovative functionality can be introduced to a new market with the technology push approach. Preliminary designs of linear flow-split guidance systems and integrated functions are promising. therefore, an approach to develop new functions for linear flow-split linear guides basing on calculation models and property networks is shown [1]. With this approach, optimized solutions can be created and possible design modifications can be derived. In this contribution, the development and integration of a clamping function for decelerating the slide is presented. Calculation models for analyzing the functionality are presented and validated by finite element models and experiments. the microscopic examination of the profiles aims to investigate the material behavior, particularly of the formed areas. It is a well known fact that Reverse engineering techniques involve the following steps: scanning the object, pre-processing a cloud of points, processing the cloud of points, redesigning, and manufacturing the part. Difficulties arise when processing clouds of points resulted from digitization, obtaining geometrical parameters of the scanned object itself and getting the final associated CAD model. this paper presents an algorithm for the recognition of a rotational part form. the part has been previously scanned and will be redesigned for re-manufacturing. To determine the surfaces of a rotational part, it is necessary to scan the part in order to obtain the cloud of points which is afterwards cleared of noise points. Beginning with the cloud of points, an algorithm is built that automatically determines the part's axis. the axis is then used to generate the required sections. the same tool also facilitates the recognition of simple, basic shapes like cylinders, cones and spheres. the points cloud data are stored in a text file. the text file contains all the points' coordinates of the cloud. After running the software on the data file we obtain the geometrical data necessary for the parametric model. this data can then be exported to a 3D design environment to redesign the digitized part. this paper contains two case studies in which a part was scanned and then, following the steps outlined above, the geometrical data of the part are obtained. With the geometrical data, the part can be modelled like a parameterized object.

An approach is proposed to identify the modal properties of a subsystem made up of an arbitrary chosen inner module of embedded space equipment. An experimental modal analysis was carried out along the equipment transverse direction with references taken onto its outer housing. In parallel, a numerical model using the finite element (FE) method was developed to correlate with the measured results. A static Guyan reduction has led to a set of master degrees of freedom in which the experimental mode shapes were expanded. An updating technique consisting in minimizing the dynamic residual induced by the FE model and the measurements has been investigated. A last verification has consisted in solving the numeric model composed of the new mass and stiffness matrices obtained by means of a minimization of the error in the constitutive equation method. Reverse engineering methods are becoming more and more important in product development processes in cases without CAD models or modified physical objects. For numerical calculations of scanned components, using, for instance, the Finite Element Method (FEM) to look at strength or vibration characteristics, we need the previously scanned data, obtained via Geometric Reverse engineering, to be converted into CAD surface data, a Finite Element-meshing and a determination of material parameters and constraints. Tremendous effort must be expended in the course of performing repeated Geometric Reverse engineering and FE-meshing, which must be done when there are iterative, largely local changes in real geometry (such as when incorporating forming dies) or in the case of topologically similar objects, which must be scanned again and again. this project is aimed at the generation of new calculation models using an appropriate adaption of existing FE meshes (made using a CAD model, for example) or FE meshes previously created with the help of scan data through the retention of intelligent meshing (constraints, material, element type etc.). In terms of their topology, these new meshes should adapt themselves to changes in geometry. Time-consuming Geometric Reverse engineering, as well as re-meshing, can thus be bypassed. Product development cycles frequently proceed in an iterative manner. Repetition of process steps is intended to improve the product in order to achieve an optimum result in design and dimensioning. the goal of these research activities is to reduce the process steps from 3D scan data to FE-meshing, in particular in development cycles. the paper introduces the project's concept, its initial results, and further steps.

the importance of dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) as a research tool in the study of polymeric composite structures behavior has been already demonstrated in the literature. Many papers were approaching the relaxation phenomenon within the polymer based composite structures and thereby their behavior under various conditions of stress and temperature. Supplementary, the effect of fillers geometry, orientation and volume fraction have been extensively approached while considering the micromechanical level and their role in the mechanical properties were suitable stated. Hybridization of two different fillers has proven to an effective method in material design allowing their developers to tailor their properties according to the application driven imposed requirements. the herein paper attempts to present a comparative study centered on the development and characterization of a hybrid polymeric composite structures made up from different combinations of carbon and glass fibers by evaluating their dynamic mechanical properties. the samples were measured using the Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA) from NETZSCH-DMA 242 C, in the 3-point bending mode, nitrogen atmosphere, at a scanning rate of 3 K/min from -40 to 180(0) C with a fixed frequency of 1 Hz. Storage and loss modulus, loss tangent were recorded as function of temperature both on longitudinal and transverse direction of the unidirectional carbon fibers, in two consecutive heating cycles. A reference sample was set up to aid the comparison analysis, made entire from one filler type. the effect of the fillers type, fillers relative volume fraction and temperature on the storage and loss moduli will be deeply investigated.

In different manufacturing applications the assessment of the health conditions of a machine tool, together with the quality and stability of the process, requires the capability of dealing with response variables described in terms of profile data. In the frame of in-process monitoring of sensor signals this is the case, for instance, of monitoring either series production of large lots of parts or machining processes characterized by cyclic signals, where both the condition of the machine components and the final quality of the worked piece may be correlated with the stability of repeating signal profiles in time. However, as far as real time data acquisition is concerned, and when measurements are performed with high sampling frequency, data are likely to be auto-correlated, and hence it is of fundamental importance to develop adaptive monitoring tools robust with respect to non-steady state conditions. the paper deals with the utilization of profile monitoring approaches for in-process monitoring of manufacturing operations and investigates their applicability to the problem of monitoring auto-correlated signals. In particular Principal Component analysis (PCA) is applied in combination with an adaptive approach based on a moving time window for continuously revise the reference model is evaluated and discussed. A real case study is used to test the performances of the method: the task is to detect tool chipping and breakage in end milling operations by means of real-time monitoring of cutting force signals. the evolution of tool wear imposes a trend in observed signals which leads to the need for an adaptive approach to properly isolate the breakage event from the slow pattern change due to wear mechanism.
