this paper proposes a method that dynamically improves a statistical model of system degradation by incorporating uncertainty. the method is illustrated by a case example of fouling, or degradation, in a heat exchanger in a cogeneration desalination plant. the goal of the proposed method is to select the best model from several representative condenser fouling models including linear, falling rate, and asymptotic fouling, and to validate and improve model parameters over the duration of operation. Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) was applied to obtain a stochastic distribution of condenser fouling. Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC) and the Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) were then computed at time intervals to assess the accuracy of the MLE results. the degradation model was further evaluated by estimating future prognoses and then cross-validating with real world fouling data. the results show the accuracy of a prognosis can be improved substantially by continuously updating fouling model parameters. the proposed method is a step toward facilitating prognosis of engineering systems in the early design stages by improving the prediction of future component degradation. Relatively large, alternating in time, operational deformations of distributed piezoelectric actuators used in active vibration control may create a hazard of material degradation and damage of the actuator/host structure coupling. In the presented study a beam-like system with a surface mounted piezoelectric sensor/actuator pair operating in a closed loop with velocity feedback is analysed. the applied actuator is a piezoelectric fiber composite (PFC) with PZT (lead-zirconate-titanate) fibers aligned and polarized longitudinally. the uniform field method based on the rule of mixtures is used to determine the effective properties of the piezocomposite. Two types of the actuator failure are taken into account. the first relates to the edge delamination modelled as a significant reduction of the adhesive interlayer shear stiffness. the second relates to the PFC material degradation, which is regarded as a softening of the matrix material surrounding PZT fibers. It is assumed that the damaged adhesive region of the constant shear stiffness extends uniformly across,the actuator from its ends to the centre. In analysis the beam is divided into sections due to its geometry, external loading and the damaged regions supposed. the governing equations of the activated beam sections are coupled equations related to the electrically induced tension/compression of the actuator and bending of the beam, respectively. the obtained steady-state solution satisfies boundary conditions and continuity conditions at the borders of the beam and the actuator sections. Results of calculations show the effects of stiffness degradation of both the bonding interlayer and the piezocomposite matrix material on the beam deflection and transmitted shear stresses. Besides, dynamic responses of the active system regarding changes of the control effectiveness are numerically investigated and discussed.

the aim of the present study is to develop specific tools to design optimal panels for multi-objective applications. the objectives considered are stiffness, strength and acoustic insulation at minimum weight. A genetic algorithm is used to design optimal sandwich structures with a good balance of mechanical and acoustical properties. the bending stiffness and mechanical strength of the panel are calculated using beam theory. this analysis is focused on a 3-point bending test, giving the stiffness as the ratio between the concentrated force and the deflection at the center of the sandwich panel. the strength is calculated as the critical force at the onset of plastic deformation. A vibro-acoustical model based on Lagrange's equations is used to give access to the sound transmission loss of the sandwich panel with anisotropic elastic layers. the main interest is on the mean transmission loss for a diffused incident acoustic field over the frequency range 50040000Hz. First of all, the optimal design for mechanical properties is assessed at a minimal weight. Quite expectedly, the best solutions are composite-skin with high specific stiffness and soft cores with high shear modulus for a minimum weight. the geometry depends on the required stiffness and strength. the design/properties relationship is discussed by monitoring the evolution of both the material properties and the geometry of the panel. Similarly, a parametric study is performed for acoustical design at minimal weight. In order to maximize the mean transmission loss, it is preferable to lower the critical frequency for which acoustic radiating is maximal. then, the best solutions for the panel are those who maximize the square root of the density over Young's modulus. the trade-off between mass and loss transmission is then explored. Efficiency is becoming more and more a main concern in the design of power transmissions and the demand for high efficiency gearboxes is continuously increasing. Also the new restrictive euro standards for the reduction of pollutant emissions from light vehicles impose to improve the efficiency of the engines but also of the gear transmissions. For this reason the resources dedicated to this goal are continuously increasing. the first step to improve efficiency is to have appropriate models to compare different design solutions. Even if the efficiency of transmissions is quit high if compared to the efficiency of the engines and appropriate models to predict the power losses due to gear meshing, to bearings and to seals already exist, in order to have a further improvement, some aspects like the power losses related to the oil churning, oil squeezing and windage are still to be investigated. these losses rise from the interaction between the moving or rotating elements of the transmission and the lubricant. In previous papers [39, 40, 41 43, 44], the authors have investigated the churning losses of planetary speed reducers (in which there is a relative motion between the "planets + planet carrier" and the lubricant). this report is focused on the oil squeezing power losses. this kind of losses is associated with the pumping of the oil at the gear mesh, where there is a contraction of the volume between the mating gears due to the rotation of them and a consequent overpressure. this overpressure implies a fluid flow primarily in the axial direction and this, for viscous fluids, means additional power losses and a decrease of the efficiency. In this work this phenomena has been studied by means of some CFD (computational fluid dynamic) simulations with a VOF (volume of fluid) approach. the influence of some operating conditions like the rotational speed and the lubricant temperature have been studied. the results of this study have been included in a model to predict

In this article we present a multidisciplinary experimentation realized between a mechanical laboratory, a computer scientist laboratory and a museum. Our goal is to provide automatic tools for non-expert. people who want to use 3D digitized elements. After scanning an objet, we obtain a huge amount of points. In order to manipulate it, it is necessary to decimate it. However, when doing this operation, we can optimize the algorithms for creating semantic topology;obviously we can do it automatically. Consequently, we are going to do what we name segmentation: we extract meaning from 3D points and meshes. Our experimentation deals with a physical mock-up of Nantes city that have been designed in 1900. After digitalization, we have created a software that can: 1. use the whole 3D cloud of points as an input;2. fill a knowledge database with an intelligent segmentation of the 3D virtual models: ground, walls, roofs... this use case is the first step of our research. At the end, we aim to deploy our method to complex mechanical parts. Nowadays, when designing CAD parts we use as well as volume parts than surface parts or meshes. We know is it not necessary to reconstruct all the triangles. It is a lost of time and we can directly use cloud of points for CAD design. However, the design tree will not be updated. So, with our method, imagine that one day we can digitalize a motor and a system could automatically create the 3D mock-up and the design tree.

this article presents an automated approach in optimal design of the spring balancing cylinder of an industrial robot using multi-disciplinary and multi-objective design optimization. Spring balancing cylinder is a mechanical device typically used in industrial robots of high load handling capacity. the objective of use of such device is to effectively balance one of main axes (typically axis-2) subject to the most severe gravitational torque. the spring balancing cylinder consists typically of multiple springs (two or three) co-axially installed inside the cylinder. design of such balancing device involves about 16 design parameters, including both geometric parameters (free length, wire diameter, spring outer diameter, and number of turns) and parameters defining mounting positions of the device on a robot. Optimal design of such device is to achieve desired balancing, measured by maximum unbalanced static torque of the balanced axis, with minimum weight and volume of the cylinder. More desirably, the trade-off relationship between the maximum static torque measured by a balancing degree index and weight of the balancing cylinder is explored. design of such balancing device is subject to a number of hard constraints defining fatigue lifetime of the springs and geometric interference between adjacent springs both in radial and axial directions. Solving of this design problem requires use of two different design tools. the first design tool is a robot static design tool. the entire robot statics is modeled. the maximum static torque of the balanced axis is calculated by finding the maximum value of static torques of the axis as function rotational. angles of the axis within its limits. the maximum static torque is used as one of the design objectives. the second design tool is a detailed spring dimensioning tool. the overall spring constant and pre-loading force are determined subject to constraints of geometric and fatigue lifetime. the integration of the design to

the issue of improving quality, costs and delays indicators in design and manufacturing is more relevant than ever in the industry. After lean manufacturing, well known in production process, the lean engineering approach is being implemented today in the field of design, taking the name of lean product development. the management of knowledge and know-how (existing, new or to be acquired) is the heart of lean engineering. In our suggested methodology this is implemented through a new generation of tools called Knowledge Configuration Management. (KCM) and Knowledge Extraction Assistant (ICEA). KCM tools are lean engineering components that provide analytical approach to knowledge management and knowledge-based engineering. these tools require a highly integrated approach that involves, for example, predefined geometrical parametric 3D models, such as CAD templates. But this approach cannot be deployed in all engineering sites. We propose to complete this KCM approach introducing a semantic network approach, coupling with Feature Identity Card (FTC). FTC contains a set of metadata and information existing in the Product Data Management (PDM), connected with information extracted from 3D CAD (Computer Aided design) models. It allows contextualizing information and ensures semantic connections, in order to manipulate the right parameters with mathematical algorithms. those algorithms will search candidate relationships between design parameters extracted from CAD models. Our suggested approach aims at extracting knowledge in cases where design never came out of Knowledge Based engineering (KBE) applications. In those situations, it seems important to complete classical knowledge management approach, and to find out the implicit knowledge embedded in 3D CAD models. this is achieved through a global approach, focusing on the product's 3D definitions. this paper introduces the research carried out on the design of a robotized tele-echography system. Such a system is composed of a master control device and a slave robotic manipulator. Our objective is to contribute to the French Agence National de Recherche (ANR) project PROSIT by designing both devices. To define the kinematic architecture, we had proposed an approach based on the analysis of the expert gesture as a first step of the design process. We have used a motion capture system to study the ultrasound examination gesture and to define the kinematic specifications for the proposed manipulator. A new kind of architecture was selected: the spherical parallel mechanism (SPM). We have chosen it because it reaches the constraint requirements. the kinematic architecture was synthesized by executing a real-coded genetic algorithm (GA). We integrated optimization criteria in the synthesis of the selected architecture. We have fixed a minimum required workspace and we have chosen to optimized the SPM in terms of dexterity and compacity. Another important part of our research was to design a haptic device to provide a very intuitive control of the tele-operated robot. We have opted for a free hand interface that integrates an active force control and feedback. An Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) has been integrated. the data collected from the IMU that we integrated are processed by a Kalman Filter. But we have modified this predictor-estimator tool from the state of art to adapt its behavior with respect to the type of motion done by the operator. Experimentations via our motion capture system have demonstrated the accuracy of this orientation control strategy the final step will be the experimental and clinical validation on real patients.

Free vibration analysis of sandwich beam with a viscoelastic core based on the extended high-order sandwich panel theory approach is presented. the effects of transverse shear and core compressibility are of high importance in sandwich structures, having an influence on the entire structural behavior especially in vibrations. For applications involving stiffer cores, the high-order sandwich panel theory (HSAPT) cannot accurately predict the shear and axial stress distributions in the core. thus, by using the "Extended High-Order Sandwich Panel theory" (EHSAPT), the in-plane rigidity of the core is considered in addition to the compressibility of the core in the transverse direction. the novelty of this theory is that it allows for three generalized coordinates in the core (the axial and transverse displacements at the centroid of the core, and the rotation at the centroid of the core) instead of just one (mid-point transverse displacement) commonly adopted in other available theories. the mathematical formulation uses the Hamilton principle and includes derivation of the governing equations along with the appropriate boundary conditions. the formulation uses the classical thin plate theory for the face sheets and a two-dimensional elasticity theory or equivalent one for the core. In addition, Young modulus, rotational inertia, and kinetic energy of the core are considered and core is assumed as an orthotropic viscoelastic material. the analysis is applicable for any types of loading scheme, localized as well as distributed, and distinguish between loads applied at the upper or the lower face. the obtained results are compared with recent research published by the present authors which was done numerically by using FEM on viscoelastic sandwich beam and the corresponding results of other previous researches. the influence of material properties, face layup and geometry effect on natural frequencies of composite sandwich beams are investigated.

A new approach to analyze two-phase water transport in microporous layer used on polymer electrolyte fuel cells is presented. the effect of mixed wettability in MPLs is studied by means of a novel pore-size distribution (PSD) model, which is used to estimate saturation, liquid relative permeability, gas relative permeability, liquid-vapour interfacial surface area, and total pore surface area. With the proposed model, micro-structural information of the MPL often neglected by older models is taken into consideration, without adding the burden of large-scale computations usually associated with pore network models and Lattice-Boltzmann methods. the model is applied to study the effects of mixed wettability on ultra-thin catalyst layer fuel cells, where two-phase flow plays a key role.
