there is a growing interest in the use of thin-wall structures as a means of absorbing the kinetic energy of a moving body. Multi-layered thin-wall structures are more efficient and lighter than thick-wall structures, and show better crashworthiness characteristics. In this task, several concentric aluminum thin wall tubes as energy absorber under axial and oblique loading are studied and optimum combination of these tubes is presented. the weight of the tubes is optimized while crashworthiness of tubes is not compromised. the commercial finite element program LS-DYNA that offers non-linear dynamic simulation capabilities was used in this study.

Whiplash injury/disorder is a common neck-injury in road traffic accidents. this paper introduces energy absorbing car-seat concepts which can reduce the risk of whiplash injuries. Computational multi-body models of a generic car seat and a biofidelic 50th-percentile male human model for rear impact are developed to assess the effectiveness of the proposed car-seat concepts. the numerical sled-test-simulations show that the proposed car-seat concepts can successfully mitigate whiplash injuries for a wide range of crash severity by utilising energy absorbing devices which can remain reusable after a rear-impact. A physical model of a proposed car-seat concept is built and tested to verift the computational models.

Engine mount vibration level, which is mainly driven by gas and unbalanced inertial forces, is one of the key metrics for the NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness) performance of a vehicle. In addition to gas and unbalanced inertial forces, crankshaft dynamics has also effect on engine mount vibrations. this project is concentrating in including the effect of crankshaft dynamics on engine mount vibrations with the aid of Finite Element Methods and Multi Body Dynamics. Flywheel swirl mode, its effect on engine mount vibration levels and engine mount acceleration for different flywheel configurations will be simulated.

this paper describes the design and testing of a low cost thermoacoustic generator. A travelling-wave thermoacoustic engine with a configuration of a looped-tube resonator is designed and constructed to convert heat to acoustic power. A commercially available, low-cost loudspeaker is adopted as the alternator to convert the engine's acoustic power to electricity. the whole system is designed using linear thermoacoustic theory. the optimization of different parts of the thermoacoustic generator, as well as the matching between the thermoacoustic engine and the alternator are discussed in detail. A detailed comparison between the preliminary test results and linear thermoacoustic predictions is provided.

Nowadays researchers focused their attention on design for manufacturing, design for assembly, design for cost or design for quality design for X, etc., but they didn't address design for manufacturing complexity. design for complexity is a systemic approach that simultaneously considers design objectives (i.e., optimize complexity level)), variables and constraints. In this paper, a guideline is presented to show the design requirements. Based on this requirement, the complexity levels will be analyzed through four fundamental levels: design for manufacturing systems vision complexity, design for manufacturing systems structure, design for manufacturing systems operating complexity, and design for manufacturing systems evaluating complexity. the new measuring is suggested for determining the level of complexity. this complexity level is measured and optimized in terms of issues count based on the designer/analyst view. this will represent the degree of freedom of manufacturing system designer to identify which issue is more important than others. the ultimate goal of this paper is to provide the manufacturing system designer with such complexity information throughout the analysis process that an efficient design requirement produces in the first instance. this analysis shows that the design for manufacturing systems complexity should be optimized and taken into considerations when designing manufacturing systems.

Rotors show very rich dynamical behavior especially when friction is involved. Due to the interaction of nonconservative, dissipative and gyroscopic forces a very interesting stability behavior can be observed. Instability of the rotor can yield severe problems, for example in the context of brakes and clutches it causes squeal, in the process of paper calendering the duration of the rollers is decreased substantially. this paper deals with the problem of how to design a rotor such that it is robust against friction induced vibrations using structural optimization. the problem is addressed using discrete and continuous models for disk brake squeal. It is shown that a proper design of the brake rotor can passively suppress squeal without introduction of additional damping into the system. Many of the qualitative results carry over to other problems of friction induced vibrations in rotors.

Pneumatic drives systems have specific working conditions like smell-less and invisible power fluid, almost dry friction regime in sealing etc.. All these, nest to the impossibility to collect and measure the leakage, make difficult to establish the moment when the first leakage occur and the evolution of drive's seal efficiency after that. Assuming that in case of non-metallic rod drives the temperature has particular distribution, the paper propose a thermography based method to monitor and evaluate the pneumatic seals' leakage, on the fly, without suspend the system duty.

In this paper, energy and exergy analysis of an existing steel electric arc furnace (EAF) was performed to estimate the furnace potential for increasing the efficiency and decreasing the electrical energy consumption. the results of analysis show that the energy and exergy efficiencies of the furnace are 56.9% and 40.5%, respectively. Field data show that mass flow rate of hot flue gas is around 10.4 kg/s in average which contains 18.3% and 12.2% of total input energy and exergy, respectively. By using energy of flue gas for preheating the sponge iron, electrical energy consumption of the furnace could be reduced up to 88 GJ which means 21.2% reduction in electrical energy consumption and 13.6% increase in steel production. Also, exergy efficiency improves about 10.8% by using preheating scheme.

A procedure based on the principles of inverse analysis has been employed to identify the elastic material parameters and the strength characteristics of epoxy carbon fiber reinforced composite laminates. By adopting a classical optimization algorithm, elasticity parameters are chosen by minimizing the mean squared error between the values predicted by the classical theory of elastic laminates and the experimentally observed ones. the average modulus of the laminate has been calculated from elastic parameters of laminas by implementing the classical equations of anisotropic elasticity in a subroutine, in order to speed up the optimization process. In a similar fashion, even though under strongly simplifying hypothesis, the strength characteristic parameters of laminas have been identified by inverse analysis, with the aim of assessing the strength of the composite laminates in the case of complex stress state.

the vibration of FG plate embedded with PZT5 rectangular patches on the top and/or the bottom surface(s) as actuators/sensors is investigated. Based on the classical laminated plate theory, the governing differential equations of motion are derived under a variable electric charge. the equation of motion for PZT5 patch is obtained and solved. the effect of feedback gain and FGM volume fraction exponent on the plate frequency and its deflection are studied. It is noticed that increasing the feedback gain leads to the reduction of frequency and displacement. Moreover, by increasing the value of the FGM volume fraction exponent the resonant frequency decreases.
