Implicit time integration schemes are used to obtain stable and accurate transient solutions of nonlinear problems. Methods that are unconditionally stable in linear analysis are sometimes observed to have convergence problems as in the case of solutions obtained with a trapezoidal method. On the other hand, a composite time integration method employing a trapezoidal rule and a three-point backward rule sequentially in two half steps can be used to obtain accurate results and enhance the stability of the system by means of a numerical damping introduced in the formulation. To have a better understanding of the differences in the numerical implementation of the algorithms of these two methods, a mathematical analysis of dynamic equilibrium equations is performed. Several practical problems are studied to compare the implicit methods.

Nowadays, the Web is a common tool for students searching information about the subjects taught in the different university courses. Although this is a good tool for the first rapid knowledge, a more deep study is usually demanded. After many years of teaching one course about ceramic and composite materials, the authors, used the Bologna reformulation of the mechanical engineering course to introduce new teaching methodologies based on continuous evaluation. One of the main innovations is one practical work that comprises the study of a recent ceramic scientific article, using all the actual available tools, elaboration of a scientific report, present the work and participate in a debate. With this innovative teaching method the enrolment of the students was enhanced with a better knowledge about the ceramics subject and the skills related with the CDIO competences.

Manipulator kinelostatic performances are usually investigated considering only the geometrical structure of the robot, neglecting the effect of the drive system. In some circumstances this approach may leads to errors and mistakes. this may happen if the actuators are not identical to each other or when the employed transmission ratio are not identical and/or not constant. the paper introduces the so called "Generalized Jacobian Matrix" obtained identifying an appropriate matrix, generally diagonal, defined in order to: 1. properly weigh the different contributions of speed and force of each actuator. 2. describe the possible non-homogeneous behaviour of the drive system that depends on the configuration achieved by the robot. theoretical analysis is supported by examples highlighting some of the most common mistakes done in the evaluation of a manipulator kinetostatic properties and how they can be avoided using the generalized jacobian matrix.

In this paper, a comparison between a common and a novel prototype of freeze dryer has been considered. A freeze dryer does the action of drying based on freezing the product fluid in low pressure along with a sudden phase change. Using correct assumptions, the freezing heat, freezing time, drying time, and vacuum creating time have been calculated. the freeze dryer was designed in CATIA software based on a new P-T diagram cycle. the novel design is able to work as hot-air dryer and also vacuum dryer, as well as freeze dryer in vacuum. No need to extra refrigerator and the use of separate cycle for drying are two advantages of the novel design. A comparison between the capabilities of the classical and the novel designs suggests that the use of novel design as a domestic device would satisfy the users.

Featuring a nonlinear novel design, Gimbal transmission, is a replacement for traditional robotic joints like gearboxes and revolute joints. this mechanism is one of the most recent types of nonlinear direct transmission (DT) methods in robots. As an alternative for traditional drive methodologies - herein called direct drive transmission (DD) methods, DT provides dynamic coupling and joint interaction attenuation while its capability to be adjusted for a desired task space point, smooth input-output characteristic, and varying reduction ratio lead to a desired force and motion behavior for the whole manipulator. In this paper, design optimization of a gimbal mechanism used as a replacement of simple robotic revolute joints is investigated. Kinetostatic model of the robotic arm is made and based on Manipulability Ellipsoid analysis the amount of force at the tip of the manipulator is maximized and compared with the same quantity for a simple manipulator. the best design variables are found using Genetic Algorithm and it is shown that this replacement leads to greater forces at the tip of the manipulator in that desired direction.

A 3-D Dynamic explicit finite element model of metal shear spinning, is developed and solved for different nose radii and feed rates. Several amounts are applied to spinning roller nose radius and feed rate, then Axial, tangential and normal forces are calculated for each combination of parameters. the results are checked with a series of experimental tests in which the process parameters are varied according to the finite element model. the experimental values are shown to be in relatively good agreement with the outcomes of the finite element model.

In this paper we investigate a three-dimensional finite-strain phenomenological constitutive model and propose an efficient solution algorithm by properly defining the variables and by avoiding extensively-used regularization schemes which increase the solution time. We define a nucleation-completion criterion and modify the regularized solution algorithm. Implementation of the proposed integration algorithm within a user-defined subroutine UMAT in the commercial nonlinear finite element software ABAQUS has made possible the solution of boundary value problems. the obtained results show the efficiency of the proposed solution algorithm and confirm the improved efficiency (in terms of solution CPU time) when a nucleation-completion criterion is used instead of regularization schemes.

A control algorithm for a parallel hybrid electric vehicle is proposed in this paper An upper level controller chooses vehicle operation mode such as regenerative braking, electric motor only, combustion engine only, engine+motor in battery discharge or engine+motor in battery charge modes. In engine+motor mode, optimum torque distribution between the engine and the motor is determined via extremum seeking algorithm that searches maximum drivetrain efficiency. Simulations are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.

An implementation of Runge-Kutta Discontinuous Galerkin method to an in-house computational fluid dynamics code capable of simulating blast waves was performed. the resultant code was tested for two shock tube problems with moderately and extremely strong discontinuities. Numerical solutions were compared with predictions of a finite volume method and exact solutions. It was observed that when there are extreme discontinuities in the flowfield, as in the case of blast waves, the limiter adopted for solution clearly affects the overall quality of the predictions. An alternative limiting technique was proposed and tested to improve the results obtained. Blast wave predictions using Runge-Kutta Discontinuous Galerkin method with the alternative limiting technique yielded slightly stronger and faster moving shock waves compared to finite volume solutions.

the main idea of flow control is the improvement of aerodynamic characteristics of flow, such as, reducing drag and unsteadiness of loads compelled by the flow field onto structures exposed to the flow. the ultimate aim of this research is to build a flow control system with the help of artificial neural networks (ANN) in order to be able to control the vortex shedding behind a two dimensional (2D) cylinder. In this study, flow over a 2D circular cylinder at laminar Reynolds numbers is analyzed by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), where obtained results are compared with the experimental values stated in literature, and flow structures are separated according to their frequency content by application of the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) method to the resulting data.
