In this paper, for the first time, the influence of internal moving fluid on the nonlinear vibration and stability of embedded carbon nanotube is investigated. the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory is employed to model the vibrational behavior of an embedded carbon nanotube. the relationship of nonlinear amplitude and frequency for the single-wall nanotubes in the presence of internal fluid flow is expressed using the multiple scales perturbation method. the amplitude-frequency response curves of the nonlinear vibration obtained and the effects of the surrounding elastic medium, mass and the aspect ratios of nanotubes are discussed. It is shown that beyond the critical flow velocity buckling occurs and surrounding elastic medium plays a significant role in the stability of the carbon nanotube.

Increasing demand for computational support at conceptual design makes behavioural modeling a challenging area for design research. this is mainly because a behavioural model of a nonexistent design artifact at conceptual level is the basis for behavioural simulation and resulting computational design support. Behavioural models are particularly important for top-down of multidisciplinary products such as mechatronic systems. During the conceptual design of such systems, intended "operational behaviour" of the artifact is described without any physical realization. As design stages become more concrete, operational behaviour can be refined so as to represent well defined mathematical descriptions of corresponding physical behaviours. In this study, a model for representing the intended operational behaviour of a nonexistent educational robot, namely a rabbit robot, is presented for conceptual design. the operational behaviour of the robot is defined as composed of states and state transitions independent of any physical embodiment. Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) and Petri Net formalism are used for the model. this representational model is the first step towards the development of a virtual prototype for the operational behaviour of an educational robot.

A cooling tower assisted vapor compression refrigeration machine has been considered for optimization with multiple criteria. Two objective functions including the total exergy destruction of the system (as a thermodynamic criterion) and the total product cost of the system (as an economic criterion), have been considered simultaneously. A thermodynamic model based on the energy and exergy analyses and an economic model according to the Total Revenue Requirement (TRR) method have been presented. three optimized systems including a single-objective thermodynamic optimized, a single-objective economic optimized and a multi-objective optimized are obtained. In the case of multi-objective optimization, an example of decision-making process for selection of the final solution from the Pareto frontier has been presented. the exergetic and economic results obtained for three optimized systems have been compared and discussed. the results have shown that the multi-objective design more acceptably satisfies generalized engineering criteria than other two single-objective optimized designs.

Finite element analysis has been used widely in automotive industry to evaluate design alternatives. Especially when there is no prototype part for rig testing;CAE (Computer Aided engineering) is the only tool to evaluate design whether it meets customer usage profile for the vehicles entire life. Antiroll bar bracket is used in heavy truck suspension which is mounted on the top of front axle & beneath the leaf spring squeezed with U bolts. Bracket has two attachment points for external loadings;antiroll bar & shock absorber. Modeling techniques used in finite element for stress analysis include assembly loads in addition to the external loads. Material & contact nonlinearities have been used for stress estimation. Alternative design is used to decrease stress level;and therefore increase fatigue life of the bracket. Rig testing has been used to determine fatigue life of bracket. Results for finite element & rig testing have been presented.

Business networking strategies and especially co-operation in logistics is gaining momentum for individual companies in order to survive in competitive markets. As cross-company transport bundling is a powerful approach to optimize cost structures, this publication deals with the conceptual design and evaluation of cross-company logistics models. For this purpose, a simulation and evaluation model is presented that supports the development of new logistics concepts. therefore models for the calculation of emissions, costs and logistics competitiveness, have to be created and combined to holistically validate and evaluate the new approach. this combination between the three different target values distinguishes the developed model from already published methods. Based on the sustainable, company-wide approach, potentials for optimization in the areas emissions, costs, and logistic competitiveness can be detected and by means of these analysis results, new sustainable and energy efficient logistics models can be designed.

Haptic interfaces are human machine interface devices used for giving feedback sensations to an operator;they are used in a wide range of applications, like aeronautic fields, remote operation of manipulators in hostile or dangerous environments, and recently also for micro assembly machines and new surgery equipments. the major advantage of this technology is the improved performance of the operator himself, in fact it has been proven that having tactile sensation combined with visual information shortens reaction time. In this paper the authors show the process used to build a prototype of a master for tele-operation with force feedback on the operator. Once specifications on nominal force, bandwidth and angular displacement of the stick were established, a comparison between different kinematic solutions was carried out and a differential drive train was chosen as the core of the device. A linear dynamic model was then developed in order to predict system behaviour and estimate its main parameters. the dynamic analysis shows that the designed joystick can achieve the design parameters.

Residual stresses are one of the key factors affecting fatigue durability of important cast parts such as cylinder head and engine block. In automotive industry, general approach is to incorporate residual stresses into durability analysis by simply superposing the values by means of a fatigue post-processor. Residual stresses elevate or decrease the mean stress value according to whether stress states are tensile or compressive. However, it is thought that uncoupling two analyses may lead to misleading results. Instead, a single analysis should incorporate residual stress and thermo-mechanical analysis steps, one after the other. this is a comparative study for these two approaches and shows that assumption of a virgin material at the beginning of thermo-mechanical analysis is not always valid although two approaches agrees well with each other for moderate loading levels.

the "continuous duty power rate" of a brushless motor is a coefficient that characterizes its ability to accelerate a load. For this reason it is also called "accelerating factor" and playes a considerable role in the choice of the motor to be used in an automatic machine. this work is focused on the analysis of this parameter, defined for each motor as the ratio between the square of the motor nominal torque and its momentum of inertia: it is exclusively defined by parameters related to the motor and, therefore, it does not depend on the machine task. the research is carried out through a database containing the main electromechanical features of some commercial motors and their "accelerating factor". Using the collected information, related to more than 300 brushless motors, some graphs are produced showing how motors having the same size can have different accelerating factors or, conversely, how same accelerating factors can be obtained through different electro-mechanical design.

this paper investigates the dynamic stability of a finite Timoshenko beam spinning along its longitudinal axis and subjected to a moving mass-spring-damper (MSD) unit traveling in the axial direction. the mass of the moving MSD unit makes contact with the beam all the time during traveling. Due to the moving MSD unit, the beam is acted upon by a periodic, parametric excitation. In this work, the equations of motion of the beam are first discretized by the Galerkin method. the discretized equations of motion are then partially uncoupled by the modal analysis procedure suitable for gyroscopic systems. Finally the method of multiple scales is used to obtain the stability boundaries of the beam. Numerical results show that if the displacement of the MSD unit is equal to only one of the two transverse displacements of the beam, very large unstable regions may appear at main resonances.

this paper presents the design and the simulation test of a Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy output feedback for yaw motion control. An integrated steering and differential braking controller based on invariant sets, quadratic boundedness theory and a common Lyapunov function has been developed. the TS fuzzy model is able to handle elegantly the nonlinear behavior the vehicle lateral dynamics. the computation of the control law has been achieved using Linear and Bilinear Matrix Inequalities (LMI-BMI) methods. Simulation test shows the controlled car is able to achieve the ISO3888-2 transient maneuver. Some design parameters can be adjusted to handle the tradeoff between safety constraints and comfort specifications.
