To be successful in one's profession, an engineer operating in the contemporary globalized world needs to be adequately equipped with suitable management skills. they include talent to plan, implement and manage engineering projects in diverse and pluralistic teams, ability to communicate at different levels, perseverance in the face of failures and crisis, creativeness to improvise innovative solutions, maintenance of physical and mental health, ability to invent and implement eco-friendly engineering solutions, and smartness to work within stipulated time-frames, etc. Large residential student communities prepare suitable context for engineering students to nurture their general management skills, if carefully planned. In the current paper, we present some innovative models and appropriate methods to convert large residential student communities into an arena where students can train themselves in general management skills. It also presents some results of two years of implementation of such methods in a men's hostel, which accommodates youngsters between 17-19 years of age in their first year of undergraduate engineering study.

In this paper, employing developed models of Ionic polymer metal composites, a cantilever beam made of Nafion is optimized for maximum tip deflection as well as maximum blocking (tip) force using the Min-Max method in a multi-objective discipline. Regarding the optimization procedure, saturation level of hydration, length and thickness of the beam, and applied voltage are considered as design variables. the robust and novel methods of continuous ant colony optimization (ACO(R)) and artificial bee colony (ABC), both inspired from collective behavior of ant and bee swarms, are here employed to guarantee finding near-optimal solutions in a continuous nonlinear constrained optimization schedule. Results obtained from several independent runs clearly demonstrate fast convergence with nearly identical results for both methods, conservatively claimed as global optima. In addition, it is shown that the multi-objective approach has ended in a reasonable reduction of tip deflection for a remarkable increase in blocking force.

the aim of this paper is to demonstrate the capabilities and potential of a Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) simulator for the tuning of closed-loop control strategies used in flexible-links mechanisms. HIL is an increasingly popular methodology used in reducing the design and validation time of complex systems. this approach makes use of a software-programmed hardware prototype of the device under test, which is able to interact with other hardware devices and real-world signals. In this paper a validation of the proposed simulator, named FLiMHILS (Flexible Link Mechanisms HIL Simulator), will be obtained by comparing the dynamic behavior of a real single-link mechanism with the corresponding response of the simulator subject to the same stimuli and controller parameters. the experimental results show how the tuning parameters obtained with the HIL simulator can be successfully used to control the real mechanism. the real-time capable model which constitutes the core of the HIL simulator is a highly accurate FEM-based nonlinear model capable of describing with consistency the dynamics of different planar mechanisms with flexible links.

Since reciprocating motion is commonly encountered in many industrial applications like hydraulic cylinders, performance characteristics of reciprocating seals is important for design of such systems. In this paper some reciprocating seals having different macro geometry have been investigated experimentally An experimental setup has been developed to perform as a hydraulic cylinder Experiments have been carried out with different types of hydraulic seals which are made of NBR. through the experiments, variation of the friction force applied to the hard chrome coated piston rod by seals, have been measured under various oil pressures in the main cylinder In the second step of experiments, the amount of leakage from the seal in one out-stroke of the piston rod has been determined for various oil pressures. the effect of oil viscosity to the performance characteristic of reciprocating seals has also been studied As a result of systematical experiments, the variations of friction force and leakage amount with oil pressure for various types of reciprocating seals have been obtained.

An innovative Counter-Flow Sand Heat Exchanger (CFS-HX) is proposed, which makes use of very small solid particles as intermediate medium to perform heat transfer between two gas flows at different temperature. the potential of the CFS-HX was already demonstrated by the authors, both theoretically and experimentally. In this work, a parametric study has been employed in order to explore the capabilities of the proposed heat exchanger. A ID model (validated by experiments) has been extensively used to perform sensitivity analyses with respect to the major design parameters, i.e.: specific heats, gas and sand densities, particle diameter, prescribed efficiency. Pipe length to obtain a prescribed heat exchanger efficiency has been calculated for a large number of configurations and results have been compared with a baseline case. the proposed computations show that a high efficient heat exchange can be obtained with relatively short pipes and with negligible pressure drop.

Pregnant women are a vulnerable and sensitive group in road traffic accidents, prone to sustaining varying levels of injury following an automobile crash accident. the objective of this research is to investigate various frontal impacts that pregnant women may undergo through simulations with a computational model of the pregnant driver;'Expecting'. Injuries when the seat belt is properly used in an airbag equipped automobile are compared with the cases where the seat belt is not worn by the pregnant driver Displacements and strains occurring in the uterus are presented as well as injury criteria such as HIC, 3ms maximum and maximum VC in order to demonstrate the injury levels. the responses of the pregnant driver model in varying accident conditions particularly to demonstrate the injuries that they may be exposed to when the seat belt is not worn in airbag equipped automobiles emphasise that the air bags are supplementary restraint systems, and not meant to replace seat belts.

A novel 6-Degree-of-Freedom (DoF) hybrid haptic device is presented in this paper Hybrid mechanism consists of parallel kinematic structure, R-CUBE and a 3-DoF orientation mechanism. In our previous study, the original configuration of the R-CUBE mechanism was investigated. In this work, the original design of R-CUBE is reconfigured as a haptic mechanism and the final mechanism is reoriented in order to equally distribute the gravitational effects to all grounded actuators. Rotational motions of the end-effector are monitored through the 3-DoF orientation mechanism placed on the moving platform of the parallel platform. the design of this haptic device is suitable to reflect forces in translational motions, thus point-type of contact is available for this system. the designed device is manufactured utilizing various types of manufacturing processes, such as wire erosion, laser cutting, milling and turning. Finally manufactured mechanism is integrated with electromechanical components and tested for manipulability

the paper shows the results of a theoretical and experimental research activity oriented to the design and the realization of a of a low cost pneumatronic prototype, proposed for tasks of pipes and ducts inspection. Geometries and sizes of ducts are significantly different and for their inspection very flexible units are needed. Different researchers propose several solutions: the present proposal is specifically oriented to an automated pneumatic low cost unit. the prototype is conceived to emulate the grub's motion: variable geometry components are deformed under the action of pneumatic power supply, following a programmable logic actuation. A fluidic muscle is used to generate the motion and two deformable air chambers are arranged at the ends of the muscle in order to assure the anchorage to the internal pipe wall. the automatic phases of the motion are managed by an external micro-PLC, allowing flexible and bi-directional motions. the unit is equipped with a micro-camera and can be also equipped with micro grippers and micro mechanical tools. the design and the optimization of the prototype's mechanical structure is discussed and related to the mechatronic approach applied to perform the cyclical movement.

Optimal Gear Ratio and Gear Shift Strategy design for a Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle Equipped with AMT

this paper presents an optimal approach for the design of gear ratios and gear shifting strategy for parallel hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) equipped with automated manual transmission (AMT). For this purpose, an AMT model is firstly provided and integrated with a pre-transmission parallel HEV model to develop a comprehensive simulation tool for vehicle powertrain performance evaluation. Using genetic algorithm (GA), an optimization problem is then formulated for the optimal design of the AMT variables including its gear ratios as well as the variables defined for the gear shifting strategy. A weighted aggregation of the HEV fuel consumption and emissions is also employed as the fitness function. In addition, the vehicle driving performance characteristics are considered as the optimization constraints. To optimize the gearshift strategy and gear ratios, GA optimization process is performed for several traffic conditions. the results show that the approach is quite effective. A considerable improvement is achieved at congested condition due to its sensitivity to the stop-start operation of the vehicle.

In this paper, a practical method to design a robust controller for pressure of boiler in Mashhad Power plant using Quantitative Feedback theory (QFT) is proposed. In reality fuel flow, air flow and pressure of boiler are three dependent parameters which must control in every power plant. the boiler pressure system has uncertain mathematical model. Uncertainties in mentioned model are caused by lack of knowledge about the dynamics of the system, pay load changes, air flow. thus, application of robust control methods for high precise control of pressure is inevitable. In the first step plant is converted into a group of linear uncertain plants. then, a controller is designed for tracking problem and disturbance rejection. Finally, nonlinear simulation has been carried out which indicates successful design of controllers and pre-filters. the research demonstrates that applying the proposed technique successfully overcomes obstacles for robust control of pressure of the Power plant.
