Dynamometer durability testing plays a very important role in engine design verification process as it is still the most reliable method to ensure the product quality before starting mass production. To ensure that the new engine as designed and manufactured will perform in a manner that increases customer satisfaction, the stresses present in the dynamometer durability test has to be representative of those an engine will meet in customer usage. thus, it is an important task to derive proper test cycles for dynamometer tests as they should definitely be correlated to customer usage in order not to under/over-test the subject. Customer-Correlated General Durability (CCGD) test, which targets system-to-system interactions rather than component-specific or subsystem-specific failure modes, is developed in this manner. In current CCGD cycles used in engine companies, state speed/load residencies reflecting the overall lifetime driving of the engine of concern is taken into account with randomized ramp-up and ramp-down stages to cover transient driving conditions. the cycle creation method can be divided into two phases: Data Collection & Data analysis. Also there are two types of data used: Vehicle Data & Customer Field Data to obtain real world customer usage profile.

WEAK RADIATOR design USING DIMPLES

A design method for achieving minimum sound radiation from a beam is presented. the strategy is to form a series of cylindrical dimples on the beam surface in order to make one or more vibration modes of this dimpled beam have the same shape as the weak modes. Consequently, the dimpled beam behaves as a weak radiator when one or more vibration modes are excited. Instead of minimizing the radiated sound power at a specific frequency or in a bandwidth, the objective is to maximize the modal assurance coefficient (MAC) which quantifies resemblance between the vibration mode of a dimpled beam and a weak mode. To perform this strategy, two key issues are addressed in this paper. the first is to determine the so-called weak mode of a beam. And the second is how to determine the required dimple size and the dimple location on this beam so that the dimpled beam may have vibration modes resembled to the weak modes. A methodology to do so based on the finite element method and the mode assurance criteria is proposed. Results show that the radiation efficiency of the dimpled beam after optimization using MAC as the objective is generally lower than the uniform beam. However, the effectiveness of this strategy depends on how close in shape between the vibration mode of the dimpled beam and the designated weak mode.

Hybrid laminated composites are gaining increasing popularity in applications where improved mechanical properties as well as reduced weight and cost are desired. However, the highly nonlinear nature of the governing equations and the combination of continuous and discrete design variables has rendered the problem a challenging one. this paper implements the nature-inspired method of continuous ant colony optimization (ACO(R)) for hybrid laminates comprising high-stiffness graphite/epoxy and low-stiffness glass/epoxy. the number of surface and core layers and their layouts (discrete) as well as the fiber angles in each layer (continuous) form the design variable set;whereas the composite's fundamental frequency and cost (to be maximized and minimized, respectively) are taken as the objective functions. Comparison of the results with those reported in the literature having used standard discrete fiber angles and implemented methods such as the ant colony system (ACS) and GA, indicates a clear improvement in the values of the objective functions for the majority of the studied cases. It is nonetheless recommended that, for practical purposes, the closest standard fiber angles to the optimal values be adopted (a procedure generally being used but not proven to be optimal), as the corresponding deviations would be negligible.

A theoretical approach, in order to define the structural behaviour of riveted joints, is presented the closed form solutions lead to the definition of a Rivet Element useful to FE models of multi-riveted structures. the objective is an accurate evaluation of the local stiffness of riveted joints in FE analysis, which is fundamental to perform a reliable simulation of multi-joint structures and, consequently, a good estimate of loads acting on connections;this makes it possible to introduce new general criteria allowing, for example, to predict fatigue behaviour. On the other hand, a low number of degrees of freedom is needed when several connections are present in a complex structure. the goal is to reach a reliable model of the rivet region which can be used as the basis to develop a Rivet Element in FE analysis. the proposed Rivet Element combines the precision in the simulation with a very limited number degrees of freedom in the finite element model of a complex structure having several rivets. In the present paper the structural behavior of two simple riveted specimens is investigated experimentally and numerically using a new Rivet Element. A comparison with a joint model performed with very refined non-linear 3D models of rivet and with experimental data is performed and a good agreement is shown.

Since the piezoelectric actuators have the disadvantages of small travel and hysteretic behavior, a long range friction actuating mechanism was designed. the piezoelectric material is used to generate high frequency oscillation for actuating a finger tip which contacted with a slide to induce the back and forth motion. the LuGre friction model is chosen to simulate the dynamics of this friction actuating mechanism. However, this piezoelectric actuating system has obvious nonlinear and time-varying dead-zone offset control voltage due to the static friction and preload. It is difficulty to establish an accurate dynamic model for model-based precision control design. Hence, the functional approximation (FA) scheme is employed to compensate the system modeling error. the Laypunov-like design strategy is adopted to derive the adaptive laws and the system stability criterion. Different trajectories tracking control are planned to investigate the motion control performance and the steady state error of this adaptive controller. the dynamic experimental results of the proposed controller are compared with that of a model-based PID controller.

In this paper, a control oriented rational tire model is developed and incorporated in a two-track vehicle dynamics model for the prospective design of vehicle dynamics controllers. the tire model proposed in this paper is an enhancement over previous rational models which have taken into account only the peaking and saturation behavior disregarding all other force generation characteristics. Simulation results have been conducted to compare the dynamics of a vehicle model equipped with a Magic Formula tire model, a rational tire model available in the literature and the present rational tire model. It has been observed that the proposed tire model results in vehicle responses that closely follow those obtained with the Magic Formula even for extreme driving scenarios conducted on roads with low adhesion coefficient. © 2010 by asme.

the extraction of energy from ocean waves has been investigated in Europe since the 1970s. During the research process hundreds of devices have been proposed and a few of them have been built full scale and deployed to the ocean. Unlike other renewable energies, so far there has not been a device standing out to be the most suitable to exploit wave power. One of the practical problems to be solved in a Wave Energy Converter (WEC) is durability in the harsh marine environment. this could be critical if parts of the converter such as turbine rotors or auxiliary floats are needed to move or to react while exposed to seawater and spray. One method to solve the problem is to use a WEC composed just by one sealed floating body carrying a gyroscope. the inertial effects of the gyroscope are activated by the float motion and are used to drive a generator. the whole system operates in the clean environment inside the float. In this work a procedure to design the ISWEC device (Inertial Sea Wave Energy Converter) is outlined. the mechanical equations describing the system are linearized, studied in the frequency domain and used as a mathematical tool in the design process. the method is then applied iteratively to design a scaled prototype model to be tested in the wave tank at the University of Naples. the final version of the prototype model is then scaled up to evaluate the performances of a full scale device.

In this research, a new approach for stability analysis of drill string is investigated. To this goal, the potential energy of drill string for axial and lateral vibrations is written in an integral equation. In this equation, the effect of geometrical shortening, which causes nonlinear coupling between axial and lateral vibration, is considered. the work done by WOB force and weight of drill string is calculated. the finite element method is employed to convert the integral potential energy of the continuous system to a discrete one. the effects of stabilizers are modeled by dropping the nodes coincided with them. Dropping and considering third and fourth order tensor of potential energy lead to linear and nonlinear stability analysis, respectively. Taking the first order derivative of discrete potential energy, the equilibrium position of drill string can be found. Taking second order derivative, the stability of the equilibrium position can be analyzed. Illustrated results demonstrate that as the length of hole is increased, the differences between linear and nonlinear cases become larger. this analysis shows the working condition of drill string is stable or not. these results can be used to obtain safe working conditions in drilling progress.

the need for maximizing the performance of micro-mechanical systems and electronic components has resulted in a trend of minimization. Minimized sizes and dimensions have come along with a complex heat transfer and fluid problem within these devices and components. For a variety of fields in which these devices are used, such as;biomedicine, micro fabrication, and optics, fluid flow and heat transfer at the microscale needs to be understood and modeled with an acceptable reliability. In general, models are prepared by making some extensions to the conventional theories by including the scaling effects that become important for microscale. Studies performed in the last decade have shown that, some of the effects that are thought to become significant for a microscale gas flow are;axial conduction, viscous dissipation, and rarefaction. In addition to these effects, the temperature variable thermal conductivity and viscosity may become important in microscale gas flow due to the high temperature gradients that may exist in the fluid. therefore, effects of variable thermal conductivity and viscosity in microscale gas flow and convection heat transfer are investigated in this study. For this purpose, simultaneously developing, single phase, laminar and incompressible air flow in a micro gap between parallel plates is numerically analyzed. In the analyses, scaling effects such as rarefaction, viscous dissipation, and axial conduction are taken into account in addition to the temperature variable thermal conductivity and viscosity.

the pattern of Portuguese Industry is typically composed by small and medium sized enterprises. In many cases, the dimension of these companies unable a general innovation culture for their products, with their own human resources. In these cases, innovation can successfully be achieved through suitable cooperation models and technological transfer between Universities and/or its Research and Development (R&D) Interface Organizations. this paper describes a successful model of cooperation between a hybrid private-public Institute, INEGI, with more than 60 Industrial Associates and National and International Industrial Companies. It is also shown the advantage of having industrial R&D Projects running inside the Faculty and the benefits obtained with the involvement of students in these projects. Examples are presented with paradigmatic projects, with high industrial impact, leading to effective competitive growth, both on Portuguese and International companies. the intervention areas of these projects cover a large variety of multidisciplinary topics, from renewable energies, processes and mechanical systems development, composite structures, rapid prototyping and advanced technologies, industrial management, to the creation of technological spin-offs.
