While many books have been published on object-oriented programming and design, little has been said about the overall development process. In parallel, evolutionary and participatory strategies have been discussed and used for years with variing success. We claim that combining object-oriented development with an evolutionary strategy which we call an application-oriented approach, will yield synergetic effects leading to a higher level of software quality, usability and system acceptance. this paper describes the various ingredients of our approach which are unified under a common leitmotif with matching design metaphors. A series of major industrial software projects serves as example and practical proof of the approach. We report about documents that have been produced and used within these projects and about the technical construction of the applications. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

this paper concerns the problem of clustering objects onto units of secondary storage to minimise the number of I/O operations in database applications. We first investigate problems associated with most existing clustering schemes. We then propose STD, a Statistic-based Tunable and Dynamic clustering strategy which is able to overcome deficiencies of existing solutions. Our main contributions concern the dynamicity of the solution without adding high overhead and excessive volume of statistics. Reorganisations are performed only when the corresponding overhead is strictly justified. Clustering specifications are built from observation upon objects life, capturing any type of logical or structural inter-object links. Moreover, our clustering mechanism does not need any user or administrators hints, but remains user-controlled. A partial validation of STD has been made using Texas. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

Conceptual design of active object-oriented database applications using multi-level diagrams 10th

Several active object-oriented database systems have been developed to address the needs of applications with complex requirements and time execution constraints (e.g. computer integrated manufacturing). However, no comprehensive and integrated modeling approach has been described for conceptually modeling active object-oriented database applications. this paper deals with these issues by extending the research of object-oriented methods with an integrated approach, called A/OODBMT (Active object-oriented Database Modeling Technique), which integrates and extends the object Modeling Technique (OMT) method for conceptually designing active object-oriented database applications. A/OODBMT models database applications by defining and integrating four new types of models, namely the nested object model (NOM), the behavior model (BM), the nested rule model (NRM), and the nested event model (NEM). the nested object model extends the OMT object model by adding nesting capabilities, and by providing a better abstraction mechanism for developing database applications in multi-level diagrams. Moreover, the nested object model adds rules to classes to specify their active behavior. the behavior model combines the dynamic and the functional modeling techniques proposed in the OMT method. In addition, the behavioral model represents database transactions through transaction diagrams. the nested rule model supports a comprehensive set of rules and visually defines the rules and their interactions using multi-level diagrams. the nested event model supports a comprehensive set of events and visually represents them in the context of rules. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

Applications in scientific computing operate with data of complex structure and graphical tools for data editing, browsing and visualization are necessary. Most approaches to generating user interfaces provide some interactive layout facility together with a specialized language for describing user interaction. Realistic automated generation approaches are largely lacking, especially for applications in the area of scientific computing. this paper presents two approaches to automatically generating user interfaces (that include forms, pull-down menus and pop-up windows) from specifications. the first is a semi-automatic approach, that uses information from object-oriented mathematical models, together with a set of predefined elementary types and manually supplied layout and grouping information. this system is currently in industrial use. A disadvantage is that some manual changes need to be made after each update of the model. Within the second approach we have designed a tool, PDGen (Persistence and Display Generator) that automatically creates a graphical user interface and persistence routines from the declarations of data structures used in the application (e.g., C++ class declarations). this largely eliminates the manual update problem. the attributes of the generated graphical user interface can be altered. Now structuring and grouping information is automatically extracted from the object-oriented mathematical model and transferred to PDGen. this is one of very few existing practical systems for automatically generating user interfaces from type declarations and related object-oriented structure information. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

An object-oriented Data Base was organized to store all the necessary data to build an electromagnetic problem and generate its mesh, giving better flexibility and allowing a high improvement in organization.

Meta-levels are complex pieces of software with diverse demands in both the computation and interaction domains. Common techniques using just code to express behaviour fail to clearly assign responsibility for a particular behaviour's definition of to provide support for the reuse or integration of existing behaviour descriptions. the techniques of fine-grained decomposition of meta-level behaviour into objects and their subsequent composition into object models provides a framework for creating, reusing and integrating complex object behaviours. Using such a framework, we show that users can develop and integrate quite different object models while retaining a high degree of abstraction and fostering meta-level component reuse.

the object-oriented data model TM is a language that is based on the formal theory of FM, a typed language with object-oriented features such as attributes and methods in the presence of subtyping. the general (typed) set constructs of FM allow one to deal with (database) constraints in TM. the paper describes the theory of FM, and discusses the role that set expressions may play in conceptual database schemas. Special attention is paid to the treatment of constraints, and a three-step specification approach is proposed. this approach results in the formal notion of database universe stated as an FM expression. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1993.

Software components developed with an object-oriented language require frequent reorganizations before they become stable, reusable classes. We propose a new algoritlun that analyses the redefinitions carried out on inherited properties when a class is added to a hierarchy, and restructures the hierarchy to discover missing abstractions and to enforce programming style guidelines. We illustrate our automatic restructuring approach with simple examples, describe formally the algorithm and the object model it is based on, and discuss its suitability for object-oriented software engineering. the results of applying the algorithm to the Eiffel library are examined. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1992.

Polymorphic inline caches (PICs) provide a new way to reduce the overhead of polymorphic message sends by extending inline caches to include more than one cached lookup result per call site. For a set of typical object-oriented SELF programs, PICs achieve a median speedup of 11%. As an important side effect, PICs collect type information by recording all of the receiver types actually used at a given call site. the compiler can exploit this type information to generate better code when recompiling a method. An experimental version of such a system achieves a median speedup of 27% for our set of SELF programs, reducing the number of non-inlined message sends by a factor of two. Implementations of dynamically-typed object-oriented languages have been limited by the paucity of type information available to the compiler. the abundance of the type information provided by PICs suggests a new compilation approach for these languages, adaptive compilation. Such compilers may succeed in generating very efficient code for the time-critical parts of a program without incurring distracting compilation pauses. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1991.
