Orientation and Mobility (O&M) skills are essential for visually impaired people to live an independent life. O&M skills are generally evaluated subjectively by instructors, a quantitative evaluation method is required. Accidents in which visually impaired people become victims at intersections and station platforms have become a social problem. the final purpose of this research is to establish a method to quantitatively evaluate the walking skill proficiency of visually impaired people. We investigated the effectiveness of biological signals using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) for quantitative evaluation of walking skills. In a previous study, we measured brain activity in sighted subjects who wore eye masks. the experimental results showed that brain activity in the prefrontal cortex changed significantly, especially when walking alone through narrow passages. We considered to be due to anxiety and caution caused by being aware of contact with the wall. In this experiment, we added subjects to verify the results of past experiments. In addition, we focused on the distance between the subject and the wall. We considered brain regions involved in cognition and intention, which are important for visually impaired people when walking. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

this paper presents rapid prototyping of networked embedded systems by the method that employs hardware and software components and an eligible executable specification language. Statements of that language should cover process management, timing and communication commands interpretable by the services of a real-time executive and a communication task located in each prototype node. the language is made executable by a technique that employs attribute grammars and either macroprocessor or Prolog-supported generation of communication software prototypes. Execution or interpretation of the expanded code embedded in reusable system components of the trial architecture provides final steps of the method. In the paper, an introduction to a dedicated asynchronous specification language is followed by a review of related prototyping techniques. the included case study deals with an application of the language for two-level specification of an Internet-based device for pressure measurement.

this article presents a hybrid. software/hardware architecture for commander's decision support in tactical operations. the architecture builds on the symbolic, object-oriented visualization software called Advanced Tactical Architecture for Combat Knowledge System (ATACKS). the extension discussed here is the design of a real-time robot agent layer that interacts wirelessly with ATACKS. this layer enacts decisions made by software agents (wargamers), continuously relays the execution states back to ATACKS, and updates its actions as advocated by replanning algorithms. the software layer is briefly described followed by the specification of the real-time requirements for the robotic architecture. the design and implementation are given with a small example that illustrates the hybrid system's operation.

the Know-It-All Project is investigating methodologies for the development, application, and evolution of frameworks. A concrete framework for database management systems is being developed as a case study for the methodology research. the methodology revolves around a set of models for the domain, the functionality, the architecture, the design, and the code. these models reflect the common and variable features of the domain. there are several issues with respect to architecture that we have encountered and are exploring. these include (1) the choice of models for the architecture;(2) the design of the architecture and its evaluation;(3) the evolution of the architecture by extending the concept of refactoring from source code to architecture;and (4) the modeling of variation in architectures across the product line. the point of the paper is to report on the status of architectural modeling in our case study and to highlight issues still to be resolved.

Heterogeneous systems are naturally complex and their design is a tedious process. the modeling of components that constitute such a system mandates the use of different techniques. this gives rise to the problem of methodology integration that is needed to provide a consistent design. In this paper, we propose a meta-model framework that provides such an integration. the semantics of different computational models can be expressed and used together in the Rosetta framework. We use denotational semantics to define unifying semantic domains, which are themselves extended to provide ontologies for models of computation. Interaction relations defined between models are then used to exploit and analyze model integration. We demonstrate our approach by providing applications where different computational models are used together.

Decoding Motor Imagery (MI) from Electroencephalography (EEG) signals is critical for Brain-Machine Interface (BMI) applications. this study investigates the Redundant Discrete Wavelet Transform (RDWT) to determine the optimal mother wavelet (MW) for enhanced EEG-based MI decoding across diverse frequency bands and topographical regions. the optimal MW selection for EEG analysis using Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) remains a challenge. While some studies have addressed MW choice for EEG analysis, few have conducted comprehensive comparative analyses. Existing studies often rely on linear correlation metrics, neglecting residual shifts and boundary effects inherent to DWT. Our investigation leverages EEG data recorded at 100 Hz during longitudinal BMI training with a powered lower-limb exoskeleton. We evaluate magnitude/phase spectra and classification accuracy for ‘No-Go’/‘Go’ tasks. For the assessment of classification accuracy based on MWs, we employ a Neural Network classifier with Time and Frequency Domain (TFD) features extracted using RDWT. Our findings demonstrate that the Neural Network classifier with TFD features extracted using RDWT enhances classification accuracy by 4.5% to 11.9%. Our analysis emphasizes the importance of the shortlisted MWs ‘Symlet2’ and ‘Coiflet1’ across diverse frequency bands, providing valuable insights into EEG signal feature extraction specifically related to MI. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Requirements engineering is a discipline within software engineering where model based approaches are still not widespread. Generally requirements are regarded as less or more structured text fragments that are interpreted by stakeholders and developers, who manually manage the requirement interrelationships. In this paper we give an overview over the basic concepts of a model-based requirements engineering approach that is currently developed by the project KOGITO. the focus of this paper is on the presentation of the underlying conceptual model and its relationship to different kinds of requirements specification documents. We present an overview over a domain specific conceptual model that is targeted at the requirements engineering for web-enabled B2B systems. the presented model is capable to manage requirements stemming from various kinds of documents, including B2B standard specifications. Finally we show how these requirements are integrated and related into our conceptual model. thereby general guidelines for the structure of conceptual models for the requirements engineering are identified.

Increased pressure to reduce time-to-market has resulted in an increased effort to reuse previously developed software components when developing new software systems. However, in numerous cases, reuse has resulted in interactions between features and/or requirements. As the amount of reuse increases, interaction detection becomes a more and more challenging subject. Although feature interaction is not a new problem and has already been researched especially in the telecommunications domain where new features are added to large-scale base systems, relatively little research has been done outside of telecommunications. the aim of this paper is to introduce a systematic approach for the detection of interactions based on requirements attributes. this systematic approach is part of a three-level framework that offers several approaches to feature-interaction detection in any domain at different levels of cost, time and complexity. the approach is illustrated using a case study.

Polymorphous computer-based systems are systems in which the CPU architecture "morphs" or changes shape to meet the requirements of the application. Optimized and efficient design for these systems requires exploration along axes beyond those of traditional system design. In this paper we outline a model-integrated toolset to aid in the specification, analysis and synthesis of polymorphous applications. Polymorphous systems can be developed utilizing a four-tiered approach, where inherent application properties and characteristics govern design practices at each level. We show through the development of the model-integrated approach that polymorphous system design is inherently coupled with the search and exploration of a combinatorial space of design tradeoffs. Design tools are needed to efficiently evaluate this large and complex space in order to arrive at near-optimal application implementations.
