Alzheimer’s disease is a global health concern, underscoring the need for early detection to enable timely intervention. By exploring handwriting data from individuals with and without AD across various tasks, we aim to identify predictive features that influence the models. the analysis encompasses data from dictation, copy, graphic, and memory tasks, providing insights into the complexity of handwriting behavior in AD. Notably, copying tasks exhibit higher predictive accuracy. Key features like mean jerk and pressure variance emerge as significant predictors. these findings underscore handwriting as a promising marker for early AD detection, informing personalized screening and intervention strategies. Future research avenues include refining machine learning models, expanding datasets, and exploring additional handwriting features to enhance predictive precision. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

the IFIP TC10 Working Group 10.1 "computer Aided systems theory" Committee Meeting at the Vienna University of Technology on the 30^th September 1999, resulted in a resolution to support a joint workshop with the ieee computer Society TC-ECBS on Formal Specifications of computer-based systems (FS CBS). Owing to a substantial overlap in this research domain, Franz Pichler, the founder of the IFIP WG10.1, and Charles Rattray, the IFIP WG10.1 chair, delegated Miroslav Sveda, a member of both WG10.1 and TC-ECBS, to act as a contact person in this activity. the ECBS Executive Committee has welcomed and greatly supported the initiation and implementation of the ieee/IFIP Joint workshops on FS CBS as Formal Specifications Working Group Sessions following annual ECBS conferences. © 2003 ieee.

this paper presents a practical approach to architecture-based design of computer based systems. the approach is discussed in relation to other existing methods of performing discovery, abstraction, refinement and evolution of systems' architectures. It has also been shown that this approach can be supported by formal methods of refinement. the approach assists the designer in maintaining a strict focus of reasoning about the architecture and its qualities.

People and organizations are significantly affected by the computer systems they use. When people procure or build systems they hope the effect will be positive, but the result has been negative in a large number of cases, such as the well-documented London and Melbourne Ambulance systems. LAS and MAS were not capable of performing their prime function because the system was not designed to properly support the organization. Use of methods identified in this paper during concept exploration and design phases would have revealed many of the problems before they occurred.

there is a growing movement to provide patients with direct access to their Electronic Health Record;indeed, in many jurisdictions this is a legal requirement. Such access may be provided simply to allow patients to review the content of their record, or it may allow them to add information in scenarios such as booking appointments, requesting repeat prescriptions, transferring information from a Personal Health Record, or providing information prior to a booked clinical encounter. However, many patients have a low level of "health literacy" which can hinder their ability to understand the information in their record, leading to undue anxiety for themselves and wasted time for healthcare professionals. there are various ways in which this problem can be addressed, including the provision of patient access through familiar, easy-to-use interfaces, such as the kiosk-style interfaces used to place orders in fast food restaurants or to buy tickets for public transport. this paper describes the implementation of a Health Kiosk Application Framework, using an ontology-based information architecture, realized using web technologies: OWL, XML, SVG and XForms. the framework has been used to implement the Oculus Kiosk, a system for the triage of patients attending an Ophthalmology clinic. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Trust is easier to destroy than create, hence, trust in overly applied automation may erode following accidents. this paper looks at the crash of a revolutionary supersonic fighter that resulted from over-reliance on protection technology. the protection system has been automated to the extent that it was impossible for the pilot to regain control and convince the system that there was a problem. Complete trust in the safety of the system has thus been translated into a new kind of computer-assisted error, where in the interest of safety the only possible exit strategy is outlawed by the system leading to the potential (or in this case, the actual) destruction of the system it was meant to protect. Overall, trust appears to be an emergent function that takes in safety issues affecting the entire system as well as the relationship between the product, client and developer and the trade-offs that underpin decisions. Operators, working as part of a system, abrogate some of their responsibility by implicitly or explicitly passing on control to computerised systems. While operators function as an integral part of systems, their trust in the ability and safety of the system plays a key role in the ensuing success or failure.

Epilepsy is a common chronic neurological disorder marked by seizures of unknown origin. Electroencephalography (EEG) is crucial for diagnosing and managing epilepsy due to its cost-effectiveness and portability, compared to advanced neuroimaging methods like MEG, fMRI, MRS, and SPECT. this study proposes a novel method to categorize six types of EEG votes using deep learning techniques. We employed 1D convolutional neural networks (1D CNN) and vision transformers (ViT), enhancing model performance with pseudo-labeling (PL) and ensemble learning. the dataset, annotated by clinical experts and scientific collaborators, was divided into high-quality and low-quality categories based on expert participation. the EEGNet-ViT model with ensemble and pseudo-labeling achieved a Kullback-Leibler divergence (KLD) of 0.3362 and an accuracy of 74.22%. this approach leverages the strengths of both 1D CNN and ViT models, reducing variance and improving the accuracy of EEG signal analysis. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Development of complex software systems demands techniques to reduce the complexity of descriptions of such systems, both by using different views and different levels of detail. Such abstractions, however introduce possible sources of inconsistency. In a model-based approach, this problem can be tackled methodically using variant and invariant conceptual as well as semantical consistency conditions. Supplying these techniques in a CASE-based approach ensures the quality of the development process while maintaining its efficiency.

Industry requires new advanced tools and methodologies for the design of complex system-on-chip platforms. In STMicroelectronics we developed an innovative retargetable technology for the analysis and optimization of embedded software. In this paper we provide an overview of our retargetable tool chain which consists of: a specification reader, a disassembler a code analyzer and a functional simulator their capabilities, specific features and limitations are described in detail.
