this paper tackles the problem of ever changing embedded systems non-functional requirements, specially the architectural ones. It proposes a solution based on Features Model and MDA standards, which is called Features-oriented Model-Driven Architecture (FOMDA). this proposal can be used to help application designer in defining the mappings and transformations of UML models to as many target platforms as wished. this is done by configuring model-to-model and model-to-code transformations over tiers, where every tier represents some target platform properties that the system must be mapped and transformed to. To validate the proposal a case study related to the development of an embedded real-time system is presented, detailing how to transform a generic high-level UML model to a model specific for a given target platform. Obtained results are optimistic and conclude that the FOMDA approach can make designers re-think their current development process to make it more decoupled from a specific target platform.

Increasing capabilities of modem microcontrollers greatly increase their applicability to more and more complex scenarios. However unstable and ever-changing environmental settings require embedded systems permanently to adapt to new situations. Dynamic reconfiguration provides a powerful mechanism to execute such adaptation strategies. the implementation of dynamic reconfiguration is still challenging for embedded real-time control software. Within earlier work we have presented our framework *** for runtime adaption of component-based applications, including a runtime infrastructure for dynamic reconfiguration and monitoring, targeted for mobile and desktop environments. New experiments in our web-based remote laboratory - the distributed Control Lab - require the reconfiguration to complete in bounded time. In the remote lab we use dynamic reconfiguration to adapt experiment control to failures in user control components. Within this paper we will analyze the timing behavior of the implemented dynamic reconfiguration algorithm in order to allow for predictable execution times. We describe how complex component-based real-time applications can be adapted to changing environmental conditions, continuously meeting all tasks deadlines during dynamic reconfiguration.

Service overlays that support distributed stream processing applications are increasingly being deployed in wide-area environments. the inherent heterogeneous, dynamic and large-scale nature of these systems makes it difficult to meet the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the distributed stream processing applications. In this paper we address the load balancing problem for distributed stream processing applications and present a decentralized and adaptive algorithm that allows the composition of distributed stream processing applications on the fly across a large-scale system, while satisfying their QoS demands. the algorithm fairly distributes the load on the resources and adapts dynamically to changes in the resource utilization or the QoS requirements of the applications. Our experimental results demonstrate the scalability, efficiency and performance of our approach.

We present an architectural framework that provides the foundation for building smart object systems and uses a document centric approach utilizing a profile based artefact framework and a task based application framework. Our artefact framework represents an instrumented physical smart objects as a collection of service profiles and expresses these services in generic documents. Applications for smart objects are expressed as a collection of functional tasks (independent of the implementation.) in a corresponding document. A runtime component provides the foundation for mapping these tasks to the corresponding service provider smart objects. there are three primary advantages of our approach- firstly, it allows developers to write applications in a generic way without prior knowledge of the smart objects that could be used by the applications. Secondly;smart object management (locating/accessing/etc.) issues are completely handled by the infrastructure thus application development becomes rapid and simple. Finally;the programming abstraction used in the framework allows extension of functionalities of smart objects and applications very easily. We describe an. implemented prototype of our framework and show examples of its use in a real life scenario to illustrate its feasibility.

Static cache analysis for data allocated on the heap is practically impossible for standard data caches. We propose a distinct object cache for heap allocated data. the cache is highly associative to track symbolic object addresses in the static analysis. Cache lines are organized to hold single objects and individual fields are loaded on a miss. this cache organization is statically analyzable and improves the performance. In this paper we present the design and implementation of the object cache in a uniprocessor and chip-multiprocessor version of the Java processor JOP. © 2011 ieee.

this paper presents a memory management solution for distributed real-time Java. the proposed model is targeted at distributed applications that require to keep their internal state and that consume a bounded memory size in their operation. the aim is to provide an alternative to the garbage collector for distributed real-time systems and to avoid the penalties it introduces. the approach is based on the usage of scoped memory defined in the real-time Specification for Java (RTSJ). Our solution introduces constraints in the programming model and in the current distributed Java architecture. However, these are compensated by eliminating the dependency of the garbage collector in the end-to-end invocation and by achieving se cleaning with respect to the memory consumed by remote invocations.

New applications introducing restrictions in power consumption, heat, costs and available space lead to small microcontrollers becoming more and more important in distributed real-time systems. Traditional real-time middleware architectures don't fit very well for these small devices. the paper presents an ongoing approach of constructing middleware for small devices by adapting the microkernel concept known from operating systems to middleware. this middleware called OSA+ is service oriented and consists of a small core, basic-, extension-, and user-services. the core provides only a restricted functionality, while the basic and extension services adapt and scale the system according to the application environment. A first (quick and non-optimal) prototype implementation offers a core size of about 60 kBytes and an average size of about 10 kBytes for a basic service. We consider this as a basis for further optimizations leading to yet smaller sizes.

One of the problems with Java for real-time systems is the unpredictable behavior of garbage collection (GC). GC introduces unexpected load and causes widesirable delays for real-time applications. In this paper, we propose a technique that reduces and bounds the memory requirements for real-time Java programs. this technique can eliminate or reduce the need for GC and allows for a more predictable execution behavior and efficient utilization of the available memory. A theoretical model is presented and a number of benchmark tests are used to evaluate this technique in PERC, NewMonics' real-time JVM, and Sun's JVM the results show that in some cases GC can be eliminated and an application's execution time decreases and becomes more predictable.

Recent advances in software processes and artifacts for automating middleware configurations in distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems are starting to address the complexities faced by system developers in dealing with the flexibility and configurability provided by contemporary middleware. Despite the benefits of these new processes, there remain significant challenges in verifying their correctness, and validating their effectiveness in meeting the end-to-end quality of service (QoS) requirements of DRE systems. this paper addresses this problem by describing how model-checking and structural correspondence can be used to verify the correctness of a middleware QoS configuration process that uses model-based graph transformations at its core. Next, it provides empirical proof to validate the effectiveness of our technique to meet the end-to-end QoS requirements in the context of a representative DRE system.

there is a trend towards using object-oriented-programming languages to develop hard real-time applications. However, some object-oriented-features, such as dynamic dispatching and dynamic loading, are prohibited from being used in hard real-time systems because they are either unpredictable and/or unanalysable. Arguably, these restrictions could make applications very limited and unrealistic since they could eliminate the major advantages of object-oriented programming. this paper demonstrates how we can address the dynamic dispatching issues in Worst-Case Execution Timing (WCET) analysis with minimum annotations. the major contributions include: discussing the major issues involved in using and restricting dynamic binding features;weakening the restriction of using dynamic dispatching;presenting how to estimate tighter and safer WCET value in object-oriented hard real-time systems. Our approach shows that allowing the use of dynamic dispatching can not only provide a more flexible way to develop object-oriented hard real-time applications, but also does not necessarily result in unpredictable timing analysis.
