real-time simulation is an advanced mode of simulation in which the simulator components are designed to show essentially the same timing behavior that the simulation targets do. distributed real-time simulation is a field in its infancy but its practice is under increasing demands. In recent years the author and his collaborators have been establishing a new approach called the distributed time-triggered simulation (DTS) scheme which is conceptually simple and easy to use but widely applicable. the concept was initiated in the course of developing a new-generation object-oriented real-time programming scheme called the time-triggered message-triggered object (TMO) programming scheme. Some fundamental issues inherent in distributed real-time simulation and major design principles and implementation techniques for resolving those issues within the DTS framework are presented. this technical foundation has been identified through multiple major DTS experiments conducted over the years. Some issues that require further research to realize the full potentials of the DTS scheme are also discussed.

Service selection is one of the current challenges in Service oriented computing (SOC). We propose a service selection method for replacing used services in case of a failure. the approach considers the functional as well as the non-functional features of services. Furthermore, the service selection method searches for a service just meeting the requirements and not for the best possible service exceeding the requirements. this saves services having high QoS properties for clients really in need of them. © 2011 ieee.

Dynamic reconfiguration provides of powerful mechanism to adapt component-based distributed applications to changing environmental conditions. We have designed and implemented a framework for dynamic component reconfiguration on the basis of the Microsoft. NET environment. Within this paper we present an experimental evaluation of our infrastructure for dynamic reconfiguration of component-based applications. Our framework supports the description of application configurations and profiles and allows for selection of a particular configuration and object/component instantiation based on measured environmental conditions. In response to changes in the environment, our framework will dynamically load new configurations, thus implementing dynamic reconfiguration of an application. Configuration code for components and applications has to interact with man), functional modules and therefore is often scattered around the whole application. We use aspect-oriented programming techniques to handle configuration aspects separately from functional code. the timing behavior of dynamic reconfiguration depends heavely on properties of the underlying programming environment and the operating system. We have studied to which extend and with which performance impact the Microsoft NET Platform supports dynamic reconfiguration. the paper thoroughly discusses our experimental results.

To handle the extreme situation that must manage positional information of a very large volume, at least millions, of moving objects, a cluster-based scalable distributed computing system architecture, called the GALIS, which consists of multiple data processors, each dedicated to keeping records relevant to a different geographical zone and a different time zone, was proposed In this paper, we propose a valid time management and time-zone shifting scheme, which are essential in realizing the long-term location data subsystem of GALIS, but missed in our previous prototype development. We explain how to manage valid time of moving objects to avoid ambiguity of location information. We also describe time-zone shifting algorithm, with three variations, such as RT-TZS, B-TZS and TPB-TZS. through experiments related with query processing time and CPU utilization, we show the efficiency of the proposed time-zone shifting schemes.

Multiprocessor embedded software presents major challenges including the increased complexity and stringent performance requirements raised by parallel processing capability. Although component-based approaches can greatly alleviate the complexity problem, traditional approaches do not provide adequate support for performance requirements on multiprocessors. In this paper, we extend component-based approaches for performance-aware design and analysis of multiprocessor embedded software. the proposed approach begins with a component model that is able to capture concurrent and performance-critical behavior based on UML activity diagrams. It then identifies and exploits potential sources of concurrency within components to produce a multithreaded software design targeted at multiprocessors. We also provide a schedulability analysis that can be used for validating multithreaded software design from a temporal perspective.

To ensure global serializability, traditional distributed database systems implement both concurrency control and transaction commit protocols. In a distributed database systems, a commit protocol guarantees the uniform commitment of distributed transaction execution. In the last decade, several extensions to the transaction model adopted in traditional database systems have been proposed in order to support the functional and performance requirements of emerging advanced applications such as CAD/CAM, large software design projects and object-oriented databases. Nested transaction models have been shown to play an important role in such applications, however, these models are not yet fully studied. In this paper our contributions in the field of real-time nested transactions are two fold: (i) we propose a hierarchical and flat protocols for real-time nested transactions, called 2PC-RT-NT, and (ii) we implement a lock mechanism, called 2LP-NT-HP, to solve the data conflicts problem between nested transactions.

object-oriented, concurrent, and event-based programming models provide a natural framework in which to express the behavior of distributed and embedded software systems. However contemporary programming languages still base their I/O primitives on a model in which the environment is assumed to be centrally controlled and synchronous, and interactions with the environment carried out through blocking subroutine calls. the gap between this view and the natural asynchrony of the real world has made event-based programming a complex and error-prone activity, despite recent focus on event-based frameworks and middleware. In this paper we present a consistent model of event-based concurrency, centered around the notion of reactive objects. this model relieves the object-oriented paradigm from the idea of transparent blocking, and naturally enforces reactivity and state consistency. We illustrate our point by a program example that offers substantial improvements in size and simplicity over a corresponding Java-based solution.

the widespread use of mobile and wireless computing platforms is leading to a growing interest on dependability issues. Several research studies have been conducted on dependability of mobile environments, but none of them attempted to identify system bottlenecks and to quantify dependability measures. this paper proposes a distributed automated infrastructure for monitoring and collecting spontaneous failures of the Bluetooth infrastructure, which is nowadays more and more recognized as an enabler for mobile systems. Information sources for failure data are presented, and preliminary experimental results are discussed.

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) provides a smart infrastructure connecting abstract computational artifacts with the physical world. this paper presents some challenges for developing distributed real-time Cyber-Physical Systems. the focus is on one particular challenge, namely event modelling in distributed real-time CPS. A Web-of-things based CPS framework for event handling and processing is proposed. To illustrate the application of the proposed framework, a case study for achieving demand response in a smart home is provided. © 2012 ieee.

Conventional cache memories act to bridge the gap in speeds between the processor and main memory. However, typical cache memories do not take into account of the specific characteristics of objects-oriented programs. As result it may incur in a performance penalty. In this paper, we discuss how an objects-based cache device can support Java objects. this feature is especially useful in the field of real-time programming, where the determinism for memory cache accesses is a limiting factor. In order to do that, we propose an object layout which splits objects into the same sized blocks;in this way, each cache memory line supports a block. this memory model avoids external fragmentation, while minimizing internal fragmentation. © 2013 ieee.
